I know it’s been said to death but this film really did need like, 3 or 4 scenes/lines of dialogue at most to really sell its beats at the most basic level. I watched the theatrical again on the weekend with some friends and had forgotten just how threadbare it is. Y’all really have worked wonders on this thing.
I’m wondering if all visions need some form of edge blur filter to indicate it’s a vision? They never used it in the original films but I feel it would add a layer of detail.
The only time they’ve ever really done this is with Anakin’s dead wife dreams in ROtS:
But I don’t think I’d be a fan of applying that liberally elsewhere… Within the context of my edit I think it makes a bit more sense as I started introducing insert shots of visions and flashbacks a lot earlier in TFA to mesh better with their increasing use in the later films.

It looks great in still but I imagine trying to do that (make the dirt monochrome) across the whole scene might get a bit messy?
It doesn’t look like a vision. It’s just confusing. And while I assume it was that way in the theatrical cut, having Kylo’s theme burst open specifically on the shot of Vader’s helmet is kinda weird. Shouldn’t it be the Imperial March?

The music has also been changed, yes. Kylo’s theme here borrowed from TLJ rather than the understated cue of Vader’s theme is relatively appropriate given it’s the first time the audience really gains any insight into why Ren is the way he is in this edit. I don’t much care for the sequels’ approach of flatly stating the expected themes when familiar symbols appear, so I wanted to change it up just a little.

So when he returns to Vader’s mask after the events of TLJ, he searches “deeper” and thinks he is discovering more about the presence speaking to him.
Also that’s the whole reason the Wayfinders existed in the first place, even Vader and himself coveted them because that region of space was so treacherous to traverse.
Yeah the Sith seem generally fairly inscrutable in their machinations. In the theatrical edition, a year has passed and Kylo has been using what he learned from Snoke to track down Sith artifacts in search of Palpatine after his big broadcast.
In my edit the narrative context is significantly different, with this taking place moments after TLJ Rekindled’s ending. So Palpatine has decided it’s time to bring his Sith Jason Bourne “in from the cold”, as it were. And then a year passes, and we see Rey training, etc, Kylo rebuilds his mask after being up to God knows what (assumedly assembling his bois and fetching his mask from the rubble of the Supremacy to complete his Vaderfication).
Appreciate the thought and attention you’ve given to editing this, Testing. I read the original version on reddit some time ago and largely agreed with the concepts, and you’ve expanded on them nicely.
Then why doesn’t Palps just lead Kylo Ren to Exegol?
He does? In the scene I linked. Or do you mean in the first place, as a young boy? I imagine that kind of speaks for itself, no?

I really like the idea of Kylo connecting to Vader’s helmet and it “showing” him how to find the Wayfinder/Exegol is a good idea. It’s something I’ve thought about before. Because it does seem like Palpatine has been influencing Ben through Vader’s helmet for years, and it makes more sense for Kylo to connect with the helmet before he knows about Palpatine, rather than after. You would think he would be reluctant to even connect with it after realizing Palpatine has been using it to manipulate him.
But I guess in the theatrical film, he is just using the helmet’s dark side aura to help him reconnect his mind with Rey’s?
To be honest I really don’t have a good read on why he is touching Vader’s helmet in the theatrical other than the fact they salvaged the footage from another scene. Watching the Ascendant version of the training course scene, it’s kind of clear to see that intercutting was a pretty late-game change.

I recently made a bit of a breakthrough and put the finishing touch on my sequel mega-edit, namely how we transition from TLJ into TRoS and the context of Kylo’s final prayer to Vader’s mask.
After receiving a mysterious broadcast in his darkest moment at the end of TLJ Rekindled (thanks to poppasketti), Kylo Ren (using footage moved from a later scene) beseeches guidance from what he believes to be his grandfather’s presence, or essence, which leads him to Mustafar in search of a hidden ancient power. This in turn leads him, inexorably, to the true phantom behind the mirror, Palpatine.

Yes, the more hints of Palpatine’s return the better I reckon. If you think there are more parts of the movie where a Palpatine hint could be dropped that would be cool. Eg When Kylo is communing with Vaders helmet. “I have been every voice inside your head”

I took it as the moment it cuts away from Luke crying to Death Star II action is when Anakin fades away. And Luke is only burning the empty suit in the end. But you still have to fade away before you become a ghost.
Qui Gon’s didn’t, he was cremated on an open-face flame, and he supposedly discovered the ghost power. They play pretty fast an loose with this stuff.
