Worst Edit Ideas

Is it just me or has this thread run its course? Rather, I feel like we keep suggesting things because we can and not because we should, resulting in quantity over quality. Maybe I’m just projecting. I’ve stopped posting suggestions here when I noticed I was doing that. I prefer waiting for the real gems, you know? No need to clutter the thread with “random = funny”. But hey, that’s just me. Maybe I should just unsubscribe.

I get it, but also I feel like this thread also acts as a bit of a much-needed pressure valve for this subforum. Would hate to find out what happens without it…

REY NOBODY - A Collaborative Thread

Don’t have anything to share yet, but working on the audio edit of Rey taking about her vision with Finn gave me the urge to work on Rey Nobody a little more.

I’m currently messing with the Force bond duel scene, which I think is the most difficult scene to alter, because you’re having to actually change the narrative somewhat, and not just cut lines.

I might have something to show sooner rather than later, but this scene is a real pain in the ass. Many of Kylo’s lines “echo” in the other channels, so even if you change/cut lines in the primary dialogue channel, you can still sort of hear them in the other channels. Which means you would have to basically replace the music, sound effects, and dialogue reverb in a few parts of that scene.

With that being said, I still think it’s doable, but if I share a test with y’all, it definitely will be a “test” and nowhere close to final. I’m curious how other people who have tried editing this scene have tackled this issue.

Hey RL, not sure how this is coming along, or what your new intention for the Kylo Quarter Dual even is, but I had a thought. Rather than replacing the dialogue with new lines, what if we just, ya know, cut most of the scene out? Kylo says, “Where are you?” They clash a couple of times. “You can’t hide from me.” Few more swings. Rey hits the Vader pedestal. “So that’s where you are.” Rey manages to shut down the connection. Kylo turns to the trooper, “She’s in my quarters, lock down the ship.”

Do we even need to explore her backstory, or her parents, or have any meaningful conversation here at all? All of the stuff relevant to this movie comes in the next scene anyway when he’s all like, “We’ll kill Palpatine together.”

In fact, I almost wonder if the Hanger Scene will play out even better this way. As it is, Kylo says, “I’m gonna be right there, Rey, and then we have stuff to talk about. Cool?” So then when they have their little face-off in the hanger, you’re just waiting for them to chat. On the other hand, if you make the Quarter Dual about just tracking Rey down, and end it with an ominous “There you are…” - and also consider that the last time they met on Pasanna, he tried to turn her into roadkill - when he appears in the next scene in person, the audience is waiting with baited breath for him to attack. But then…he starts talking? He’s suggesting they team up to kill Palpatine?? Holy shit, this was completely unexpected. What’s going to happen next?

Relies on the surrounding rescue of Chewie being re-edited a bit but I like keeping this sequence intact anyway: https://vimeo.com/549085906

I'm Seeking Help Recreating Rogue One Title Sequence
Time

Is this just two video layers that you’re cross-dissolving between? If so, to make what you’re describing work you’ll need to recreate the background and then both text elements as separate layers, placing one layer “behind” the other for the intended effect. The STAR WARS logo should be fairly easy as you can find transparent versions of that everywhere, and have it just shrink then fade. The ROGUE ONE animation might be trickier, but if you grab a screenshot of the starfield from that video and use that as a background you might be able to pull it off. So:

 1. Background starfield from screenshot
 2. STAR WARS logo that shrinks then fades
 3. ROGUE ONE video element that dissolves in over the other two

Nah, the LUTs already in use are better, if I remember right.

Here’s two clips. The finished puppet show and conference room (complete with “Captain Hux”).

If you’re after feedback on the stormtrooper lines, they’re a little loud and not very integrated into the scene. A mild touch of hallway or plate reverb and a bit lower in the mix and they’ll be about perfect. Just my $0.02𝇍!

You wanted feedback so here it is.

Like every fan edit, we can debate the details here and here but overall your work show great respect to the source material, reinforcing the strength of the sequels while eliminating the rough edges. I certainly will recommend your edit for star wars fans who have a hard time enjoying the sequels but want to watch them anyway for whatever reason.

If i have to point one thing, i would move the some time later before Kylo go to Mustafar get the way finder. I understand what you went for but his face scar almost healed and his conversation with the First Order generals are two elements that make the time jump more logical in its original place IMO.

But it is not that important, i enjoy this a lot as a pretty big fan of the sequels ( even with their shortcomings.) Good job and thank you.

Thank you for the feedback! I understand where the critique regarding the time skip is coming from, for sure. I am considering removing the title card entirely and allowing the viewer to fill in whatever timing gaps the intuit to be right. I’ll have a play around with it at some point. Glad you enjoyed.
