Alright, burned Superman II again, and it works fine. I might have had some other programs running during the burn. Still doesn't fix The Pianist though.... I'm thinking I should just send it back to Amazon, but I don't know how much work is involved in sending it back and such :-/.

I'VE RUN ACROSS COMMERCIAL DVDs THAT HAVEN'T PLAYED RIGHT BEFORE. SOMETIMES YOU GET A BAD BATCH OF DISCS. YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM GETTING IT REPLACED BY THE MOVIE STUDIO. THERE SHOULD BE A TOLL-FREE NUMBER ON THE DVD PACKAGE THAT WILL GET YOU THROUGH TO CUSTOMER SERVICE.

So you're suggesting I go through the actual movie studio (in this case, Universal) rather than going through where I bought it from?

DVD lock up question

So far this has happened on two DVDs, the first being The Pianist and the second Disc 1 of the new Superman II torrent. On both of my DVD players there are certain parts of the films that become very pixelated and lock up the player, very annoying. On both my computers however, they play fine. Do you think my players need to be cleaned or something? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks guys!

The Mace Windu Debate

The only reason this debate even exists is because George went overboard with the whole Superjedi premise in the prequels, giving them crazy badass skills far, far, FAR beyond regular people. Obviously Jedi are supposed to be able to perform feats that are beyond regular people. That's a no-brainer. They have a great degree of athleticism, and they can do things through the force. The prequels, however, allow them to do every kind of aerial acrobatics short of actually flying. So the fact that Mace Windu dies by falling out of a high window was poorly done and left more ambiguous than it should have been, based on abilities of the Jedi as demonstrated throughout the previous two movies. That's George's own fault in his writing.

I would have to disagree with that. Of course they'll have skills beyond regular people, that's what makes them Jedi. But if you take Windu, who has his arm cut off and thrown out of window (after being hit by force lightning) its very unlikely he would survive. They aren't invincible.

In any case, the whole point to the "balance of the force" prophecy is that in the end, the force is balanced. Two dark jedi (Vader and Palpatine) and two light Jedi (Obi-Wan and Yoda). So it's doubtful Mace was meant to survive.

THX-1138

Having seen both the director's cut and the original, the original is definetely the better one. However, I don't hate the DC as much as I hate the SE's of the Star Wars series. THX-1138 was a very low budget film, so I can agree with him on most points that they simply did not have the money to do certain things. The editing feels very cramped in a way that I can feel that they desperately wanted to pan over to other things, but couldnt' for fear of exposing the small sets.

So, originals the best, but I recommend checking out the DC as well.

BTW Trooperman, the "eye-rolling" scene is something you'd need to see the DC to understand. He is not simply rolling back his eyes like we would, they roll back completely into his head, something they could not have accomplished simply with the actor as well as their effects budget. Is it an improvement though? In the case of the scene, I feel it helps, yes, but its nothing earth shattering.

OK, um, how do you post screenshots to this site? Yeah, I know, a very newbuie question, but hey, everyone's gotta start somewhere. After another look at it, the video is likely being stretched.

If you already have an image, host it at a place such as Photobucket (free) and then you can use [img] tags to post it. Google it for a more complete answer.

Yes and no. I want black bars on the top and bottom, that is, when you watch the film on a regular TV. I don't know, there is just something about the look of that that I like. I don't want them on the sides, though.

Wait, so your cropping the original release? That's just as bad as pan and scanning...

Well, not exactly. The image when I do this seems more expanded. Nothing is cut, I HATE pan and scan. It's more or less spread out, I believe. Either that, or shot in that ratio, I'm not sure.

I really don't understand what you're doing... do you have any screenshots? As Quinnsey mentioned above, it sounds like you're stretching it, which you shouldn't do. The fact is that the Holiday Special was shot in 4:3, there is absolutely no reason to convert it to any other format.

Hmm... don't recall there to be any cover on the one I downloaded. Are you talking about the one on MySpleen? If that's the case I'll just download the cover from there. If not, if you could send your cover to MSwaidan@scu.edu, that would be awesome. Thanks in advance!
