Frustrated with DVD burning
Time
I don't know if this has been covered in another area, but the search function turned up nothing so I figured I'd just post here. A few times I'll burn a fan edited DVD and I'll get great results. Other times, it'll play fine on my computer, but on a stand-alone DVD player I have skipping issues, pixelation and so forth. Does anyone know why these errors are not apparant on a computer DVD player, but only on stand-alone? Sometimes copying the DVD and reburning it on another disc via Nero will work, but in one case (Blade Runner) I get a disc copying error, which means I have to download the whole thing over again. Ugh. This is probably more of a rant as much as it is a legitmate question. Thanks in advance guys!

Yeah, I got it from over at subcin.com -- good stuff!

I tried them, but the link to the workprint is no longer funcional. Any other places we could get the workprint from?

The website works fine. Just E-Mail the guy for info. He responded to my questions within less than a day.

Should I use DVD-R? Is there a better MAC program that will burn it in a more accessible format? It did work on a friend's DVD player but there was nothing special about his unit, its a few year old basic. The wide screen was also clipped on the corners too, was that how it comes?
Sorry I need the training wheels...any help anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

I've always been told to use DVD-R's. Never had any problems with them myself, unless there was a problem with the burn itself.

What do you mean by clipped corners? You mean like overscan? Because that's independent of the DVD itself. Or do you mean something different entirely?

Yes, as far as I know, The Phantom Edit is just the stupid parts like Jar Jar cut with the same story

As far as I know, the Phantom Edit has all the scenes with the Gungans removed, so I don't know how much of a story is left.

The two ones I've seen have been Magnoliafan's and ADigitalMan's edits. For what you're looking for, I think that Magnoliafan's would be the best, as Jar Jar's speech is garbled and subtitled with new lines. I prefer ADigitalMan's myself because when watching all three of the prequel edits together, along with the original three they all fit together as on cohesive whole without losing much of the original plot. Both edits have their ups and downs but I'd advise you to check out both for yourself to decide for sure.

that was a stupid digital fix mistake grrrr

Huh? No, I think you have it all wrong.

It was Lucas' original vision for Luke's saber to be green in the training scene on the Falcon.

Yeah, see, what was meant to happen was that the destruction of Alderaan caused a disturbance in the force, which caused the force crystals in the saber to shift to a greener hue.

Hehe... gotta love the official message boards.

Well said.

I know it must seem really cool and such to be able to work on Star Wars, but when all is said and done, it's a job. You're not there to horse around and discuss who was the better bounty hunter or what really creates the force or random crap like that. You work your ass off, and let me tell you, movie-making is a hard job. Which is why I'm only doing it for fun.

Like Lucas or any other filmaker doesn't consider what they do fun.....

Making movies has got to be so much fun that it can't possibly be thought of as work. Besides if it's fun and you get off on doing, then it really isn't work, is it?

There are definetely fun parts of movie making (I mean, it's not a necessary thing... why would people do it if it wasn't fun?). I loved putting movies up on the screen and seeing people enjoying them. My Econ teacher actually used some of my class project videos to show to his other students to help them learn better. That just makes me feel awesome inside.

But, I really don't know how else I can tell you in a way you'd understand. It's a business for these guys. They have serious work to do, and if work isn't turned in on time, you can bet there will be hell to pay.

And just out of curiousity, how old you are? Not to say you're stupid, because you're not, but I think all you need is some experience in what it really takes to make a movie.

I disown the prequels as 'true' Star Wars movies, mostly because it failed to live up to the OT and its glaring continuity errors in the backstory.

Just because they aren't good doesn't mean they aren't "true." I didn't like Die Another Day, but its still a Bond film .

You're the dude who makes the sound effects on the Star Wars films. How can that be frustrating, I have no idea...

So, something doesn't sound exactly right here....

Have you ever made a movie before? It's very frusterating. Try doing lightsaber effects... after a while of rotoscoping you wan't to kill yourself.

As for the article, this Roffman guy sounds like he's full of it. Another Yes-men...

Sorry, never made a movie before, but I don't think it's frustrating. It's hard work, yeah....and it can be challenging, but I don't think it would be frustrating. But since I don't make movies, I will ask if you do....if you don't, then maybe both of should pipe down cuz we both may not know what we are talking about.

Burtt didn't do any rotoscoping, dude. He came up with all kinds of wacky sounds from all kinds of wacky sources. Doesn't sound too stressful to me. I'd take the job.

I will reiterate....he's working on STAR WARS. Not some no-name sci-fi flick. I think Burtt was unsatisfied with something.......probably his boss. Burtt was with Lucas from the beginning. That would make Burtt less likely to be a yes-man since he knew Lucas when Lucas was a nobody with a few films under his belt.

Something sounds off....

I've made quite a lot for school and fun, and I'm a member of our universities' TV station.

I was using the rotoscoping as an example, I've done sound work too, and trust me, it's a huge pain to get the sounds not only in the right place, but to make it seem like they're in the environment and not canned.

And, yes, I'm sure it must be fun to work on Star Wars, but let's be reasonable. It's a serious job; what these guys do is shown all around the world. That's quite a bit of stress. I honestly don't know how they keep from going crazy.

Well, that's the point. No matter what Lucas claims, the films aren't meant to be watched in numerical order. It totally ruins it. I've said it many times, but the prequels exist solely to fill out the originals. Technically, they're part of the expanded universe, because they expand on the real story.

What may I ask is the "real" story? Not to be rude... but Star Wars never actually happened. As far as I'm concerned, if Lucas wrote it, it "happened" as far as the movies go.

Eyes Wide Shut was shot in 4:3. No need for an anamorphic transfer

Yes there is. It wasn't projected at 4x3. Rumor has it that WB is putting out a proper widescreen version of the uncut print soon.

It wasn't projected in 4:3 because most movie theaters can't do it anymore (or so I've been told). Kubrick shot this composed for 4:3. Not to say he didn't pay attention to the widescreen version, but Eyes Wide Shut (and, for the record Full Metal Jacket and The Shining) were all filmed and intended to be scene in 4:3. Widescreening would cut off half the movie.
