TWC326 is from the same source, it maybe one generation above Starkiller/MeBeJedi:

more automated pics here: http://fd.noneinc.com/Theater_Performance/1977-TWC326_SWB-1.html

I appreciate the resources, but those screencaps are ghastly!

None, in case you miss it, this matte shot was digitally recomposited in '97, when doing so they also added two blinking lights on the building to the left. For some reason the bright red blinking light seen on the building to the right on the original is barely seen in the special editions.

GOUT

DVD

Where the original composite with its extra layer of grain and mattelines around the live footage was beautiful and had atmosphere, the new bright and clean one looks fake in comparison. They knew what they did back then.

By darkening the matted-in actors and messing with the colors (AGAIN), the backgrounds have been highlighted and look like cardboard cutouts. Nice job!

Back to the doco... I'm not sure why there was so much time spent on the Raiders of the Lost Ark fan remake. The section dealt with fan films, but the Raiders bit seemed out of place. This is about Star Wars.

I thought it was about George Lucas... wasn't it?

Yes, but it felt to me like the Raiders part went on a bit too long.

"The People Vs. George Lucas" documentary...
Time

I just finished watching this documentary. Although I'm personally tired of all that's been done to Star Wars over the years, I enjoyed it overall and shared the feelings of many of the interviewees. Unlike the "battered wife" analogy, however, I've walked out the door and left for good.

I don't know that I'm as forgiving in the end as the doco suggests fans should be. It'd be nice to one day have quality Original Trilogy movies and then I'd be having my own ROTJ-like Ewok celebration. But that day is not now or soon.

Back to the doco... I'm not sure why there was so much time spent on the Raiders of the Lost Ark fan remake. The section dealt with fan films, but the Raiders bit seemed out of place. This is about Star Wars.

I also agree with the comment here about the DVD "bonus" discs getting such a brief mention, as it's one of the most FFFUUU! moments from Lucasfilm to original fans in recent times. Including the Holiday Special kind of makes up for that though ;)

I would have liked to have heard a bit more from Gary Kurtz too.

I give this documentary a B.

Why the hell did all the ESB Falcon cockpit scenes get cropped? It's like they thought "tighter means more intense". Kersh & co. framed the cockpit scenes tighter than the original film (which looks more like a mock up) so it looked less fake and more of a lived in environment but still kept plenty of room to have full view of everyone.

Yeah, "tigher, more intense" instead of "faster, more intense".

And you thought George Lucas had no variety in his directing style.

Was mentioned in another forum when someone looked at the recent blu-ray preview pics.  Endor gained an atmospheric glow in the SEs.  (in the picasa page there are various pics where this tag can just be added if this is new.)

found here: http://www.millenniumfalcon.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=8997

A) The glow around Endor was not even there pre-1997 versions

That Blu-ray capture looks horrible; like a photoshop (and I've seen a few in my time...)

Info: DVNR smearing in GOUT not in the master...? Or is the 1995 release a different master altogether...?

I must admit that I think I'm so obsessed and purist in my mind when it comes to the first two films that I wouldn't be able to watch your edits without looking at how good you accomplished and de-specialised certain shots or not instead of loosing myself in the "original" so I gave up the thought. It's amazing but I can still lose myself in these films when I watch some of the original versions out there even though I know these films by frame, I really thought that would be impossible especially after the frame by frame obsessiveness in 005's thread. ;)

The biggest reason I cannot watch anything sourced from the 2004 transfer, is the completely destroyed cinematography, I even choose the DVNR of GOUT and low res before that shit. I also know that I am in minority in this thinking.

But you're not alone... ;)

^^Same here. I can only watch the blurry GOUT movies or nothing.

Do you mean the forest, or the sky? If you mean the forest...it's the same forest. If you mean the sky... In the original, the clouds in the sky of Yavin IV are somehow behind Yavin. It's one of the 2004 changes that really, really made a lot of sense.

I think it's mostly the over-saturation of the SE, plus the in-your-face X-wing in the foreground (and the new background looks a little phoney despite the addition of clouds).

It looks like they flipped the forest so the trees closer to the camera on the right-hand side (original) are directly in front of the watchman to make him appear more like he's part of the tree tops.

Well either way I certainly hope that the boxes shown on amazon are just stand-ins. That's some seriously bland packaging.

The slick move would be to do two different packages.

Have one shaped like Yoda's head to represent Jedi, and then one like Vader's helmet to represent the Sith.

The gushers will almost certainly buy two sets of the same DVDs just to get the unique packaging.

How about one featuring George Lucas's severed head... and the other one in the shape of his neck.
