Where does your screen name come from?
Time
Pink Floyd used to perform a couple of song-cycles in concert (circa 1969) entitled "The Man" and "The Journey". The first of these concerts was adverstised as "The massed gadgets of Auximenies; more furious madness from Pink Floyd" with a similar tagline appearing on adverts for subsequent shows.

(Check out CDR009 on the website of this fan "label")

Auximenies is sometimes spelled "Auximenes". On Pink Floyd boards neither is uncommon, often combined with a number. In retrospect, I wish I had added "1972" (my birth year) to distinguish myself from other auximenieses.

So why did I use a Floyd-related name on a SW board? Well, I came to these boards with no Star Wars fan-produced DVDs except the Dr. Gonzo set. Because I am active in trading live music recordings -- bootlegs -- I figured I could use my cache of live music DVDs (unofficial/OOP stuff) as trade bait for the various Star Wars fan DVDs (bonus materials, documentaries, etc.) that some of you may have. I'm on dialup so downloading torrents is not an option. So I maintained the Floyd-related (albeit obscure) screen name and paired it with a well-known pic for the avatar.

Alternate title for "A New Hope"?
Time

4. If YOU had to give this episode a title, what would it be?

I initially thought of this:
Star Wars Episode IV: Assault on the Death Star
but then decided it sounds too much like a board game.

The best I could come up with is Star Wars Episode IV: Awakening of the Force. Although the idea of A New Hope refers in part to the optimism the Rebellion gained with its victories, I believe Luke himself is the "New Hope". Therefore Awakening of the Force seems appropriate as it maintains the "big picture" view of things, and fits the back-and-forth which-side-is-winning theme of the titles.

Regardless of how one feels about ROTJ, I don't think this is a valid "configuration". ESB does not have a proper ending (by design). It's the only one of the three that has a cliff-hanger ending like the old serials that GL cites as inspiration. No doubt, Star Wars is a true standalone (because GL had no idea if he'd get a chance to continue the story), but Empire must be followed up by another film.

There is another configuration you didn't mention:
The Prequel Trilogy (all by itself)
Those films are so different from the One True SW Trilogy that as far as I'm concerned they can stand by themselves.

I think it bears repeating that Adventures of Baron Munchausen is available on DVD. RevBeastly is using this thread to secure a proper transfer of the LD so as to preserve the extras that were absent on the official DVD.

Alternate title for "A New Hope"?

My Art of Star Wars is the '94 re-print, so I wasn't sure if "Episode IV: A New Hope" appeared in the '79 original or if it was added for this version. So it is confirmed to be in the original printing of Art of SW?

The earliest pinpoint we can give is that "Episode IV" was put in place as early as November of 1978, when the fourth draft of ESB was written; the second draft was Chapter II but then Lucas merged Father Skywalker and Darth Vader and created the prequel trilogy, reflected in the next drafts where the episode listing was bumped ahead by three films and the nine-episode plan established.

Okay. So in Nov. '78 only "Ep4" became a reality but not the specific ANH title? Am I reading you right?

Alternate title for "A New Hope"?
Time
What is the origin of this title? What year can it be traced back to? I'm not talking about the theatrical re-release of 1981, but rather when it has been documented to have been thought up as a title for the film.

There are a few specific bits I'm looking for a response on. #4 can be answered by just about everyone!

1. Supposed year of origin (attributable to a GL quote where he says he had that idea since he was 5 or whatever).
2. Actual year of origin (a script draft or other documented evidence of this title).
3. Any official alternate titles (again, from documented sources).
4. If YOU had to give this episode a title, what would it be?

I've never cared for A New Hope as a title, particularly because as a stand-alone it is atrocious, unlike ESB and ROTJ. But I've never bothered to ponder it long enough to come up with an alternate.

Check HERE to determine which broadcast was the source. As for lineage or specific version, there's no telling since it is without menus which would have provided some sort of identification. Your best bet may be to send a copy to one of the resident experts for 1:1 comparison.

Saving DVD menus
Time
My question is along the same lines...

I'd like to take an existing DVD (with a menu) and combine that material with new content on a new DVD. But I don't want to alter the menu of the existing DVD.

Let's say the disc I want to leave as-is is called Circuit City (as in the Apocalypse Now Complete Dossier Circuit City exclusive bonus third disc). So the newly created DVD would have a top menu from which you would select either "New Stuff" or "Circuit City". If "Circuit City" were selected, then the familiar menu that already exists on the CC disc would appear, with selectable content.

You follow me? Is this possible?

but still 1st class if they're one of the SONY media IDs.

You should definitely check for updated firmware for your drive. Older firmwares simply don't know about the newer media IDs and default to slow speed with media they don't recognize.

Brand names mean nothing. As DM points out, those Sony AccuCores might be made in Japan (Taiyo Yudens) or made in Taiwan (media ID unknown by me as I won't risk buying those). The 16x AccuCores seem to be Taiwan, and the 8x I have found to be TY Japan. But you can burn them at 12x. If you want to find Taiyo Yudens, look for Sony, Fuji, or Maxell made in Japan. Or you can by them under the TY badge online.

I swear by Taiyo Yudens and have never had one crap out on me. If you do a check of PI/PO errors (PlexTools does this for me), you can get an indication of the burn quality of your discs. Good results bear well on future ability to copy them. My friend at a duplication shop swears by Prodiscs. I tried some out and was pleased with the results. These are made in Taiwan, btw. Anyhow, check out the link provided by DM.

Disabling Auto-Stop?

Heh. Just saw your other post where you described that the player had copy protection. You should have put 2 and 2 together!

I saw mention of those little "video clarifier" boxes at the other thread. Those *do* work in my experience and you may need to include one in the middle of the video component connection. You should try it without first and then check the results. You'll be able to tell if you need it or not.

It's probably detecting Macrovision. Even if it is a tape you made, if there was some Macrovision protection on the source, it'll be on your copy. And so the combo player is programmed to stop if it detects that.

I'm just guessing here. I have a dual-deck VCR that does the same thing when going from deck to deck. Strangely my Nth generation bootleg copy of Pink Floyd The Wall Live had some sort of copy protection on it (which is probably why a pristine copy of that has never surfaced). To copy it I would connect RCA cables from the video out to the video in. The I would assign the the video out source to be Deck A and the record source for Deck B to be the video in that I had plugged into. This defeated the copy-protection detection and prevented the auto-stop.

"Star Wars: Bounty Hunter - Beyond The Game" a Galactus & MoveAlong Production
Time
Forgive my ignorance. As I was reading the description of this project, I was thinking that "cut scenes" were bits that weren't used. So I wasn't exactly sure what the nature of this project was. But then it dawned on me that in the context of a video game it might mean something else. You see, I haven't been a gamer since the 8-bit NES. But I *did* play Golgo 13, and I recalled the sequences between the game-play that furthered the story. A search of Wikipedia confirmed my hunch.

So, now that I have dialed in to what's going on here, can you tell me what the running time is of the main feature?

Yeah, I always thought her response should have been "Ben Kenobi? Who the heck is that?" considering that "Ben" was his incognito name and she refers to him as "Obi-Wan" in the hologram message.

The bottom line is that it wasn't all terribly well-thought out by GL at the time.

What did the Prequel Trilogy need?

As for spaceship and set design, I'll take the death stars, TIE fighters, X wings, Y wings, Millennium Falcon, star destroyers, cloud city, AT-ATs and AT-STs over anything I've seen since.

Among the many beefs I had after seeing TPM, one that stood out for me personally was that there were no memorable spaceships/vehicles. Perhaps the OT ones were so memorable to me is because:

a. it was groundbreaking, so we weren't used to seeing other-worldly vehicles

and

b. I was the perfect age to enjoy playing with the toys throughout the run of the OT (age 5 in '77, 11 in '83)

After each film, a large part of the discussion centered around the vehicles. The Millennium Falcon had an attitude to match its pilot. It, along with the Death Star, was an actual character in the film. The Landspeeder was so cool, too, as far as we were concerned. TIE fighters had a great look. Then came ESB and the AT-ATs. We couldn't stop talking about those. The snow speeders were pretty meh, as were the cloud cars. But Slave I was a great reflection of its pilot (much as the MF was for Han). For ROTJ, the speeder bikes were the main vehicle of interest. But the AT-STs and Imperial Shuttle were definitely discussed as well.

The Millennium Falcon had more of a personality than anyone in the PT. With each film, we learned about the ship's strengths and weaknesses, we found out who loved it and to what degree, we saw it frustrating those who loved it. It was crucial to the Battle of Yavin, pivotal to the rescue of Luke in ESB, and was once again heroic in the destruction of the ROTJ Death Star.

Nothing in the PT came close to this.

No. I for one recall debating at the lunchroom table (at age 8) whether or not Vader was actually Luke's father. I was in the camp that thought Vader was trying to trick Luke. In watching the film later as I got older, I realized that the exchange of thoughts between Luke and Vader as the Falcon was escaping Bespin made it quite clear that the intention was for the audience to walk away believing that Vader was in fact his father. And I believe at that point, GL was decided on the identity of Vader.

Hearts Of Darkness - A filmakers Apocalypse (Released)

Okay. I've checked out a friend's original DVD release of AN to see what the Theatrical Program excerpts were all about (that's the one "special" feature that isn't on the Circuit City Complete Dossier bonus disc). It's pretty lame. Hardly gives you a sense of what the program is like. So I bought one off of eBay. I figure I can scan it myself and make a better "extra".

I've got a few different versions of the AN Workprint, and I've also picked up a copy of the Playhouse 90 rendition of Heart of Darkness (starring Roddy McDowall as Marlow and Boris Karloff as Kurtz). And I've been working on some artwork that compliments the Complete Dossier release.

Now, if I can just find ANY test footage of Orson Welles' attempt to bring HoD to film. I found nothing on the internet to suggest that such footage is floating around. I did see that Indiana University has a Welles collection at their library that includes Heart of Darkness scripts. Those could be interesting. Especially to compare to Millius' AN script.

I don't have a copy of the DVD-Video spec so I'm not sure if it's technically required, but I understand there are players out there which will choke if they don't find a DD track. Perhaps it's best to leave it on too if both will fit.

I wouldn't bother retaining the DD track just to avoid the potential for hanging. I have NUMEROUS fan-made concert DVDs that have only PCM audio. In the trading groups I'm in, I've never heard of anyone having a problem with these.

Of course, if MoveAlong is correct that there won't be enough room, then this is all moot anyhow.

Huh? First off, the DL thing was simply an example of how someone who already donated their time to create a fan project could feel a further crunch in terms of $$ spent. None of these HoD transfers are DL, to my knowledge.

Now...
Why would your lack of a DL burner prohibit you from buying a DL blank and sending it to someone who would then burn a DL DVD for you (out of the kindness of their heart) and return it to you using the postage-paid mailer you provided?

The whole point of B&P is to accomodate those who don't have anything to offer for trade, either due to a lack of interesting items on their list or due to a lack of the technical means to make copies. PIF is nice and all, but if someone isn't willing to put forth a small effort up front (which is, gathering supplies and sending them off per the link I provided) to obtain something they want, then I would have a tendency to ignore their request.

I still have the cassette and book for Episode 4. One major difference between this and "The Story of Star Wars" 12-inch was that the read-along cassette used different actors with altered dialog. I still remember the non-Mark Hamill Luke asking in a puzzled Peter-Brady-meets-puberty voice "My father was a jedi?!" Hilarious.

Anyhow, if anyone needs 'em for a project, PM me.

No doubt. I just don't like shelling out cash for what can be traded. I contacted a seller about B&P'ing* for a copy (with a little bit of cash thrown in), but he said he needed the money for school. I explained how what I was offering was actually a monetary "win" for him, but he never replied (nor did he counter my original offer). He ended the listing early and re-listed, probably to do away with our brief exchange, which appears with the item listing.

And that, my friends, is why we should avoid buying from sellers unless we're desperate. I've got a VHS>DVD transer, and others around here have LD>DVD transfers. I'm always willing to trade, and I know others are too.

*btw, do you guys know about B&P (or "bnp")? Check it out:
http://www.mcnichol.com/bnp/

I mean, I've seen some guys doing projects and they are understandably apprehensive about sending out DL discs because of cost. But if those who want something would be willing to send the blanks in pre-paid postage mailers, that would alleviate the burden. If someone wants something from me but I'm not interested in anything of theirs, I'm usually always willing to B&P. Of course, international mailing makes it a bit tricky. But nothing a few extra blanks can't take care of.
