Apocalypse Now - Workprint (now available) (Released)

I don't know why he would have to join the forum in order to let us know what the tapes contain. Private messages that aren't curt can usually take care of things. Besides, I don't invite people to various forums without first developing some sort of rapport with them to try to figure if they'd be a fit. Anyhow, here's what I sent to him:

"Hi. My friend was bidding on the Apocalypse Now rough cut U-matic tapes that you won. We are very curious as to the contents of the tapes. The rough cut is known to be 5-6 hours long, but 3/4-inch tapes can't record at variable speeds (AFAIK), so it looks as though these tapes contain no more than 3 hours of footage. Any light you can shed on our curiosity would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I have a copy of the rough cut (289min) on 3DVDs that I would gladly send you for free if you would like to compare the quality to the material on the tapes you have won. Just let me know."

Oh well, it happens. If the content on the discs was only 60 minutes a tape, then it probably wasn't the workprint.

Maybe we should contact the buyer to see if he even got the item.

That was my plan. Not so much to see if he got the item, but to find out the contents. Message just sent to him.

What if...
...these pictures were added as an alternate angle on an existing "preservation"? How much disc space would that take up? I think an edit of the audio would be too difficult as ZigFried is drawing just about every scene. The Story of Star Wars LP would definitely NOT work since it is missing many whole scenes.

I'd love to confirm it since Gomer and I are both in the Chicago area.

HEEEEEEY!!! I'll bet I know who Gomer is!!!!!

When I saw Episode 3 at the midnight show, there was this older guy (definitely in his 30s) that sat right up in front. The theater was packed and this dude starts clapping and singing "We want Star Wars!!!" clap clap "We want Star Wars" clap clap. Then these college kids behind me and my sister started yelling, "Nerds, nerds, nerds, nerds, nerds" just like in Revenge Of The Nerds. Next thing I know, the WHOLE theater is chanting, "NERDS NERDS NERDS NERDS NERDS!!!!" It shut that guy up really quick. Come on Gomer.....that was you, wasn't it? Admit it....

I dunno. Maybe this is Gomer here on the left. If so, I'm certainly curious if that was his "date" to Celebration III or just a wonderful photo-op.

It matters a lot--it shows you have no grounds for claiming that this forum is meant to cater to a specific mindset. It's awfully pretentious of you to come in here and act like you know more about this forum and its purpose than the long-time members and even its founders.

The problem with this is that you assume that just because someone has recently signed up then they must be new to the site. Some people, myself included, have read the threads here for some time prior to signing up and have a very good sense of what has gone on around here.

"Crappy Star Wars"-- perfect title, too!

I dunno. This is too amusing for that title. Seriously. But I have nothing to offer in its stead.

What about synching this to the in-theater recording that this guy made in 1977? It even includes him reading the opening crawl! If this is the chosen audio, perhaps the "Crappy" title would be appropriate.

I have no idea if this term is well known, particularly to folks outside the USA, so I thought I would make certain people would know what I was talking about. My own father calls them "lungers" instead of "loogies" (he grew up East Coast, I grew up West Coast), so I don't even know if loogie is standard in the USA (though I'm sure all Americans know what a loogie is).

I second this. Or "third" it, actually, as SSWR said essentially the same thing.

Any chance of giving the blue a bit of greenish tint and still have the planet NOT stand out while differentiating it from Alderaan?

On a slightly related matter...
Someone said the Geonosians built the Death Star. But Wikipedia said this:
"It was on Geonosis where the plans for the Sith's absolute weapon, the Death Star, were developed. After the Separatist defeat...Darth Tyranus escaped with these plans to Coruscant, where they could be kept in safety. The planet was then occupied by the Republic."

I know that statement doesn't necessarily preclude Geonosis from being the construction site, but I was wondering if information was being misinterpretted (non-EU, non-PT scholar here, so I'm genuinely curious about this).

Heh. I always taunt my wife saying the game will be over in one turn, but inevitably I get a question along the lines of "What actor played General Rieekan?"

Oh, geez. Blast from the past. I forgot all about that game even though I used to play it often. Another one I had that I thought was pretty cool was Dark Tower.

Just found this single-player online version of Dark Tower.

Now that my memory is returning on this, I had loaned my Dark Tower game to a friend down the street. He had it for probably a year (I guess I had lost interest about the time I loaned it), and then he committed suicide. I didn't feel right about asking his mom for my game back, so I never saw it --or more tragically, him-- again.

So please, if you ever see someone at your office brushing their teeth after lunch, don't act as if it's weird, ask him where is he from. Odds are he is a compatriot of mine!

A Chinese guy I used to work with brushed his teeth mid-day and it was weird. Why? Because he was not afraid to hock up a good loogie and generally make a lot of noise while he went about his business, causing anyone present to be quite uncomfortable/disgusted.

On the topic of general hygiene, one thing I have become particularly aware of is what people do with their hands after touching their mouth/licking their fingers (I work in a biopharmaceutical laboratory and therefore have the habit of not touching my mouth or eyes with my fingers). It's not uncommon for me to see someone (at a cafeteria-style food joint) take a bite of their food, lick their fingers, and then go grab something from the counter that requires them to touch a handle that others will need to use. I find it gross but inevitable.

Also, I definitely avoid supermarket samples that include some sort of dip (apples w/caramel, bread w/cheese spread, etc.) because I always see unaccompanied kids double-dipping (and some adults, too!) and I have no desire to share spit with them.

One I enjoy but haven't played in a while is Balderdash. An unheard of word is read by the moderator (who changes from turn to turn) and players must write a definition for it. The moderator then reads all definitions (including the real one). You can earn points (and presumably spaces on the board) these ways:
- If the definition you wrote is correct (unlikely, but possible)
- If you guess the correct definition.
- If another player chooses your fake definition as the real one.

There's always a player who tries too hard to have his definition sound genuine, and also one who writes the silliest things. Funny thing is, sometimes the actual definition is so absurd that you think it was submitted by the silly guy. Eventually the whole affair becomes a laugh fest and often the moderator has a hard time reading the definitions due to uncontrollable laughter.

Blokus is one I played for the first time last Christmas. One of the kids got it as a gift but as you play it you see that it is challenging for adults, too.

Oversaturation is the problem. When I check out the "General Star Wars Discussion" forum, without fail Go-Mer-Tonic has the most recent posts on multiple threads. Does he ever stop?

If you don't want to read messages of some members just use proxomitron a.k.a. Moth3r's enhancement filter.

I tried this but unfortunately it didn't work for me. I guess I'll have to wait for the new forum software. But the bottom line is that if you don't want to hear from him, then don't engage him. I know it is difficult, but there's a certain point where you just need to stop replying.

This one here with Anakin carrying Padme looks pretty cool. Still could probably use the main Star Wars title logo on the front, though.

I think I was about 12 when it was all the rage. I loved playing it and was fairly good for a kid. Original Genus Edition was the only one we had.

Now I have the Star Wars OT version and the LOTR movie trilogy edition. I'm the SW expert and my wife is the LOTR expert. Usually we each team up with a kid to make two teams. Often my 10-year-old daughter bails me out on questions like "how many Stormtroopers escorted Leia to Darth Vader aboard Tantive IV". And the other night my 7yo helped me out on more than a couple LOTR questions!

Just last week realized my good friend is a fan of old-school TP. I think he has Genus so we're gonna get together and play to match wits.
