Good point. I'm not too familiar with 3/4" tape, but could they have been recorded at half-speed and therefore hold up to 2 hours each?

What's your eBay username?

It could be in better quality than the present workprint release.

Wow. That's very cool. Doesn't look fraudulent, plus the guy has a history of good feedback.

Discussion on this AN rough cut auction has moved to the AN Workprint thread:

Apocalypse Now - Workprint (now available) (Released)

Over on the Hearts of Darkness thread, crazyrabbits posted a link to an auction for the AN rough cut on three 3/4 inch tapes. I thought I'd bring the topic over to this thread as it is more appropriate.

He and I discussed the possibility of pooling our financial resources to try to snag this, but didn't know if there was more interest (and therefore more contributors) besides ourselves. We could each kick in around $40, but doubt that could get the job done so we were hoping anyone else might be willing to contribute anything.

My friend works at a professional duplication and transfer facility, and getting these to DVD would not be a problem for me. BTW, my ebay ID is sound.chaser, although I have not yet bid on the item. I did ask the seller if he's viewed the tapes can give any info on the quality of the contents, but I have yet to receive a reply.

So, any interest out there?

McCallum on Jar Jar & Kids before TPM came out

I saw TPM out of excitement for a return to the Star Wars universe. I saw AOTC partially out of obligation and partially out of a hope that it would be better than Ep1. In my estimation, AOTC was the worst movie I have ever seen. Just a train wreck. My wife agreed and has to this day refused to see ROTS, which I saw purely out of obligation.

I don't recall if I saw TPM twice or only once. ROTS I will eventually see again. I still haven't sat through my MagFan edits of 1 & 2.

Wasn't an earlier Hitchcock film, Rope, also in just one setting?

Not just one setting, but filmed so as to appear to be one entire take. The edits between takes were masked by methods such as a character walking in front of the camera in the foreground and stuff like that. It's a really fun film to watch on a few different levels.

What does that have to do with my artwork? No where on there does it say the source. You can use it for whatever version of the film you have, and there are more than a few out there. My personal copy is sourced from a VHS, and I included that on an earlier draft of the artwork which I printed out for myself.

Right now this is just a rag-tag collection of stuff I've collected, not some sort of fan "release".

Here's my stance

And "Awakening of the Force" is any better? LOL.

Absolutely. While I wouldn't go so far as Darth Richard to describe my suggested alternate title as "kick ass", it is definitely better than "ANH", and here's why I think that:

Imagine watching a trailer for Star Wars in 1976 or early '77. Not one of the teasers, but one that showed scenes from the film. At the conclusion, the title "Awakening of the Force" (standalone, not "Star Wars: Awakening of the Force") appears with the announcer saying it in his best announcer-y voice. One would probably say something along the lines of "Well that's pretty cool". Not because the title is spectacular or anything, but because the movie looked cool, and the title didn't seem odd based on what was just witnessed. Now, imagine seeing the same trailer with the punchline "A New Hope". I could see my reaction being, "Huh?? The movie looks cool, but what's with the title?" I've seen many trailers where I've had such a reaction to the films' titles.

Of course, the movie is really called "Star Wars", as I'm contantly reminding my kids, so this is all just an exercise in "what if"....

Hearts Of Darkness - A filmakers Apocalypse (Released)

Well, here's what I've cooked up so far:

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q280/auximenies/HeartsOfDarkness-display.jpg

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q280/auximenies/ConradsHoD-display.jpg

The actual jpegs DO NOT HAVE the brownish-tan backgrounds. Why? So you can print the image on kraft paper so that it will precisely match the Complete Dossier packaging. You can get a roll of kraft paper for $5 at Staples. Cut a piece that is approx. 8" x 14" (21 x 35cm) to feed into the printer. Before I print out these artworks, I add a thin black boderline so that I will know where to cut out the final insert.

Of course, when printing out on kraft paper, the images are not nearly as bright/crisp/clear as depicted. They still look good, though.

How do you watch the Star Wars Saga?
Time
How do you watch the Star Wars Saga...?
I usually watch the films with my 10 and 7 y.o. daughters (both OT freaks w/little to no knowledge of the PT) in this order: SW, ESB, ROTJ.

To celebrate the 30th Anniversary next year im going go to do a Star Wars marathon.

How about this? For the 30th Anniversary of the beginning of the OT, watch the three OOT films in order. Then, in 2029 watch PM>AOTC>ROTS to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the beginning of the PT -- if the PT is still meaningful to you. My guess is that it won't be, and you can save yourself 7 hours of precious time.

Does this include the Gene Shalit interview from 11-July-1977? The Today Show re-ran this during all the SE hype, but I see from the images at the link that it was also re-run by MSNBC.

I taped this during the '97 repeat, but loaned the tape out to someone I lost contact with.

in Yoda's mind, the return of the Jedi is the only hope for the galaxy

I don't doubt this was Yoda's opinion, but I have to then think that he had pretty much stopped caring about the galaxy by the time of ESB. Let's assume that he knew where the young Luke and Leia were "hidden" (I say "assume" because I only saw the PT once, and even if it establishes that he knew I still don't consider the PT to be gospel to my perception of the Star Wars story). What was he doing in that swamp? I guess you could suppose that he was counting on Obi-Wan to lead Luke to him, but what about Leia? You'd think he'd have some sort of plan for getting her trained. Since apparently he didn't, I would assume that he had grown tired of the struggle and didn't care so much. Now, once Luke did find him, it would seem that his hope & concern for the galaxy had been renewed. But prior to that...........

I think by "all for which they have fought and suffered" he is referring to all the freedom-fighting activities of the Rebellion in general.

Maybe Yoda thinks, because Luke is not ready, that Vader will succeed in turning him to the dark side. With two dark jedis (or "siths", I suppose), including one with knowledge of the locations of the Rebels, the Rebellion would certainly be doomed. But then what of his "help them you could" comment? Maybe engaging Vader would be enough to allow his friends to escape (due to diverting his attentions), but in the big picture all would be lost. A stretch? No doubt about it.

It's not like Luke's arrival single-handedly led to the downfall of the rebellion or anything.

Perhaps Yoda underestimated Luke's "readiness", and therefore it wasn't such a bad thing for him to go to Bespin.

I always found it strange that when Luke left Dagobah, Yoda was insistent that he wasn't ready to face Vader. But he does so anyway. Fast forward to ROTJ. Luke goes back to complete his training, and Yoda says only one thing remains. He must confront Vader. Huh? Luke's probably thinking, Isn't that exactly what I did? And you told me I wasn't ready?
Of course, we can surmise that Luke continued training on his own during the period between ESB and ROTJ, but I always thought the final requirement was funny. I read Shadows of the Empire a long time ago, so I don't recall if this addresses any of his further training.
