Long-term mobile phone use raises brain tumor risk: study
Fri Mar 31, 2006 10:00 AM ET

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The use of mobile phones over a long period of time can raise the risk for brain tumors, a new Swedish study said on Friday, contradicting the conclusions of other researchers.

The Dutch Health Council, in an overview of research from around the world, last year found no evidence radiation from mobile phones and TV towers was harmful. A four-year British survey released in January showed no link between regular, long-term use of cell phones and the most common type of tumor.

However, researchers at the Swedish National Institute for Working Life said they looked at the mobile phone use of 905 people between the age of 20 and 80 who had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and found a link.

"A total 85 of these 905 cases were so-called high users of mobile phones, that is they began early to use mobile and, or wireless telephones and used them a lot," the study said.

"The study also shows that the rise in risk is noticeable for tumors on the side of the head where the phone was said to be used," it added.

Kjell Mild, who led the study, said the figures meant that heavy users of mobile phones, for instance of who make mobile phone calls for 2,000 hours or more in their life, had a 240 percent increased risk for a malignant tumor on the side of the head the phone is used.

"The way to get the risk down is to use handsfree," he told Reuters.

He said his study was the biggest yet to look at long-term users of the wireless phone, which has been around in Sweden in a portable form since 1984, longer than in many other countries.

Aw come on, can't they bend the rules just this once?

You know how Geology Fanboys are. Probably have their own forums....

"I think we should call it kryptonite, in honor of Superman."

"Dude, it's not a mineral - it's sedimentary. Typical of all you tectonic fanboys"

"Fuck you - it was discovered in a rollover anticline on a growth fault"

"Bullshit, it clearly came from a faulted anticline"

"You're a troll anyway. I remember you from the igneous board"

That is awesome. And there are forums like that, I'm sure.

Unico? Never heard of it.

I do! I have both movies and in excellent condition!

Though I have yet to try subbing them or getting someone to translate the dialogue, I was able to make MKV-formatted video files of both films with Japanese and English language tracks to switch between. I stuck them up on MySpleen if you're interested in checking them out. I wish I could do better with the English audio personally, but I only had copies to work from.

I have most of Sanrio's other feature films as well including "The Mouse & His Child", "Ringing Bell", "The Legend of Sirius" (a.k.a. "The Sea Prince & The Fire Child"), "Winds of Change" and "A Journey Through Fairyland" that I converted to AVI format (Legend of Sirius is an MKV featuring English and Japanese audio tracks with English subs). I only wish Sanrio bothered digging this up here (they sell them for decently cheap prices on DVD in Japan currently).

Cool - thanks! I'll have to check it out. My wife was a huge fan of Unico when she was little. Where did you source the English from? From as far as I know, it wasn't available on DVD. And maybe this should be a in a different thread, or PM's.

Sorry to get off topic, Molly.

LOL well i am trying to find a way to capture the scenes from the game to make them into movies, but its a bit out of my league, im talking to people about it. and if some people here knows how to do it, let us know!!!! lol

Unfortunately, using the "standard" PS2 capture method, the only movies that can be extracted from Lego Star Wars I or II is the trailer at the beginning. Screen capturing/game recording seems like the only bet, as far as I know.

The Empire Strikes Back - The Vintage Edit (Released)
Time
Most impressive. Overall, I love it. I love that it has a "glow" throughout the whole thing, while also having somewhat muted colors. One of the things I remember about ESB from when I was young was that it was so less colorful than the other two movies.

A couple suggestions for V2:
- as Luke is running out of the wampa cave, it looks really weird, like it is missing frames or slowed down
- tone down the fiddling on the opening crawl - it casts a weird glow around the whole screen (at least on my tv) until the text fades away
- more color consitency during the first part of the Vader vs. Luke duel
- Vader vs. Luke in the windshaft could be brightened or have a little more blue to it (not much, though)
- you missed some blue R2 shots in the trip to Dagobah, I think
- add more clickable chapters in the chapters menu

In the end, I consider the results of your color tuning here much more successful than OCP's process. Hoth (for me) looks pretty well perfect. I much prefer this approach than the one in ESB:CE. I like too that you aren't mixing OUT materials in the same scenes as 2004 SE. Awesome! Can't wait to see the others! Good luck with the first movie - by the way - original 77 crawl, or ANH crawl?
