Help: looking for... Small Wonder/Out Of This World - Preservation?
Time

Has anyone ever come across preservations of the 80’s television series Small Wonder or Out Of This World? They are so awesomely bad but they are not on DVD yet!

When/if they do get released, they definitely deserve to be paired together in a double-feature style series set, to show the epitome of what a cocaine-fueled TV industry can create.

Come on - there's good computer animation and bad. Of course, it's pretty subjective. My opinion is this stinks. Something like Homestar Runner, while crude and simple in comparison to the amount of effort put into this new series - is better (to me) because it's appropriate for the material and consistent. Here, you have ships, planets, landscapes almost identical to the quality used in the movies, and then you have big-head Yoda waltz in looking like Lego Star Wars. It's just not consistent. It would be like sticking Shrek-quality animation into Revenge Of The Sith and expecting no reaction from the audience. Or better yet - it's like a CGI Jabba stuck in a movie from 1977. The animation is not consistent, and there seems to be no reason, not even stylistically. It's not pretty to look at, so why animate it if it could be done with live actors? Oh wait - maybe it's because the story is not strong/concise to fit into a 2-3 hour movie and it would cost too much to use the actual people. Like I said, I could be wrong - but if this is really going to be that epic of a story, why couldn't it be told the PT films? So what do you end up with - uninspired animation aiming for realism but falling short and a story that is apparently all fighting (even action movie trailers have more than a few lines of throwaway dialogue). Sounds like the Mortal Kombat CGI direct-to-VHS movie to me.

That is exactly what I thought. And, except for the stand-out stylized character animation, this is pretty much what the sfx in the prequels looked like, anyway. Computer-animated clonetroopers marching around with computer animated battle droids on computer animated planets or in computer animated spaceships. Blech. Congratulations animators - you earned a degree in computer animation! Too bad everything in this looks artificial and lifeless. Everything about this sucks. (To me, anyway).

Well, for the people who are up for this, I hope you aren't disappointed. Maybe I will be proven wrong.

Celebration IV

I just watched stuff on G4. They interviewed the computer sfx director from the PT and he talked about how when he first took on the role of desiging the look for the PT, he felt an overwhelming burden to make sure that he did everything just like all the fans worldwide would like to see the Star Wars universe in the pre-Clone Wars time period. He discussed it with GL and was told, "You don't have to please everyone in the world, you only have to please one person - me."

Mission accomplished!

Comics Fans

I just got back into reading comics. I was a big fan of Vertigo stuff during the early/mid 90's, as well as stuff like Bone and some manga (pretty much just Katsuhiro Otomo). What is out nowadays that is anything like those things? Like these things, what else should I check out (any time period)?

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

On a more serious note -

Adywan, I finally had a chance to go over your compiled list of changes. While I personally don't agree with the necessity for all of them, I am very excited to see what the final product will be like, those changes included. I've always been one of the people that says do whatever you want to do with this. If people like it, they will like it, and if they don't, then they don't have to watch it. Good luck with everything!

When Owen Lars does a push-up, he doesn't push up - he pushes Tatooine down.

He probably had the headstones removed because they interfered with the regular service paths of his lower-tech droid servants.

Or, the sand kept "duning" them over, since they provided a windstop.

In the SE extra scene when Biggs meets Luke in the rebel hanger just keep an eye on R2-D2 in the background. They added the person walking in front of the camera to hide the fact that they cut out a section where Red Leader starts talking about Luke's father, but this results in R2 suddenly jumping position quite noticeably.

I've never understood why they cut that dialogue anyway. It was as inocuous as what Obi-Wan said earlier in the movie.

Obviously if you are doing any audio editing or processing, it makes sense to use the original PCM as a source.

For actual listening, I've seen quite a few members on here who claim they can hear a difference. I can certainly hear the "listening inside an oil drum underwater" type of compression in very low bitrate audio, such as on Youtube videos, but I find any MP3 or AC3 encode with a reasonable bitrate to be transparent. But then, I don't have a hugely expensive hi-fi, and I know my hearing response dips at high frequencies (kids - if you regularly go to nightclubs and value your hearing, wear ear protection, 'k?)

While working on the mono mix, I compared two samples of AC3; one at 448kbps and one at 96kbps. I thought I could percieve a difference - but was that because I knew that sample A was a higher bitrate? (I.e. this wasn't a 'blind' test).

I'm considering doing a blind trial on you lot - it wouldn't "prove" anything because there would be too many variables, but it would be interesting nonetheless. Who's up for that?

I also think this whole conversation is very interesting. I honestly encode all of my ripped music at 128 kbps. Gasp! The reason I do this is, for some reason, even though I can hear a quality difference between 128 kbps and, say, 320 kbps, in the end, I just don't care that much. For storage purposes, I'd much rather have a slightly-less quality rip than "bulky" ones that are only (to me, now, mind you) what I would consider a +7% improvement. I understand quality whores' argument, but the difference between something like 320 kbps vs. CD is (again, to me at least) negligible. The reason being? I can't hear the difference, and I don't have wrecked ears. But, maybe my equipment isn't high-tech enough for any difference to register. People can do whatever they want, but I really do wonder how much of it is just a "placebo" effect.

The "Stereo Mono Mix" / XP Series - comments and ramblings / suggestions welcome

You should make a thread that consolidates all of your various projects into once place. Not saying there can't also be separate threads for each project, but you've got a lot of irons in the fire and it would be nice to see what they all are, and how they are different. This is coming from someone, though, that doesn't know a ton about the different sound mixes, other than which pieces I like.

Info Wanted: 'Wings Of Honneamise' - anyone done a Laserdisc Preservation?
Time

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wings_Of_Honneamise

The current DVD release of Wings Of Honneamise is pretty sub-standard, with numerous color, sharpness and interlacing issues.

Has anyone out there done a better transfer based on the laserdisc?

Does someone here own the laserdisc, and would you be willing to help do a laserdisc>DVD conversion?

I don’t have the laserdisc, or a laserdisc player, but it seems like this aging movie really deserves a nice preservation, along with any extras (commentary, original Japanese language, selectable dubbing/subbing, soundtrack, etc.) that are available.
