The "Official" Turkish Star Wars DVD
Time
Originally posted by: MrVess
So, if anyone was, by any chance, thinking of getting the "official" Turkish DVD of this film, don't. I did, and it's just a transfer of the VHS-sourced torrent that's been going around for a few years (and it's definitely not really official at all in any way). It comes with a horrible cover, an even worse menu, and a documentary (!) on the "star" of the film (also grabbed from some online source).

Is it the same quality as the 700 mb avi version on MySpleen?

PADME stands in the balcony brushing her hair. ANAKIN leans against the wall, watching her lovingly.
ANAKIN: . . . every second I was thinking of you. Protecting the endless, nameless Outer Rim settlements became a torture . . . the battles were easy, the longing became unbearable . . . I've never been so happy as I am at this moment.
PADME: Annie, I want to have our baby back home on Naboo. We could go to the lake country where no one would know . . . where we would be safe. I could go early-and fix up the baby's room. I know the perfect spot, right by the gardens.
ANAKIN: You are so beautiful!
PADME: It's only because I'm so in love . . .
ANAKIN: No, it's because I'm so in love with you.
PADME: So love has blinded you?
ANAKIN: Well, that's not exactly what I meant . . .
PADME: But it's probably true!

They laugh.

ANAKIN: I haven't laughed in so long . . .
PADME: Neither have I.

Me: Neither have I!

Not to be to perverse, but, did George Lucas ever get laid? He CANNOT write romance.
I mean, what the hell is this?

And what was with Natalie Portman's creepy face when she reared it for the first time in the movie, during this dialogue?

Does anyone know why in the SE's the Sunset in ANH was blue and black

I like the windows, too. The only part that bugs me is the Cloud Car fly-by right before the fixed single-story room with Leia.

I am soon to interview Toby Philpott, 'Jabba's left Arm'.

I thought I would open things up and ask you to submit some questions that you would like answered.

So, have you ever wondered how long Toby spent inside Jabba each day, or if he could see down Carrie's bikini? Then just post your questions on this forum and I will try include them in my interview.

Many Thanks
JD

I wish I could think of some questions, but I can't, other than how many weeks/months of his life were spent in Jabba's guts. That is great, though, that you've got him on board for this. Real classy.

Are you going to sneak in GL commenting on how special effects without a story is no good (from From Star Wars To Jedi)?

Questions About A Project
Time
Hi everyone,

I am finally getting ready to start on a project I've had on the back-burner for the past year. I won't discuss specifics here yet, but I have some questions in advance that I know I will have to eventually tackle, so I am making a short laundry list here. Any help from experienced folks would be greatly appreciated.

I am using Windows XP and have Womble MPEG Video Wizard and SoundForge. If I need to do something that these programs cannot do, I am willing to get others that will.

Here are my questions - I apologize in advance if they are too newbie-ish:

1. Are there any more expanded guides than ADigitalMan's - which is great - for editing/authoring DVD's?

2. How do you make a seamless branch? I want to use it for two scenarios:
- I have two alternate versions of a scene that I want to include, while still giving the viewer the option of hitting the angle button to switch (comparable to the EditDroid crawl toggle). Does it matter if one scene is longer than another? Can the audio be scene-specific, or do the two scenes share the same audio? When constructing a menu for which scene the viewer would like to watch (essentially which version of the movie they want to see), what do I need to do to make the player know which scene to insert?
- I also want to make an option to play my movie with or without a certain scene included (like ADigitalMan's Jabba-full/Jabba-less Episode IV edit). I assume this is similar to seemless branching. What is the method to do this?

3. How do you create multiple audio tracks for a DVD (again, like the EditDroid set's isolated score)? Can the audio tracks be for select scenes only? i.e. - Is there seamless branching for audio, as well, that would not require two complete audio tracks but one base track with minor branches between the two?

4. How do you incorporate subtitles into the DVD? Which file does subtitle information go into?

5. What are some good programs for creating menu's?

6. If I want to insert a still image for several seconds into existing footage - such as adding an introduction, title, extra credits, or a text block (ala silent films) - how would I go about doing this?

Here's a random question, but is Irvin Kershner Jewish?

Also, it seems like it gets overlooked a lot, but Leia kisses Luke at the end of ESB, in his bed on the Falcon. Why doesn't anyone make a big deal of that, like they do the kiss on Hoth?

I have always enjoyed Kershners commentary. He is very matter of fact, and doesn't get bogged down in theory too much. And I have always assumed that he is Jewish yes.

As for the Luke/Leia kiss on the Falcon, it's more affectionate and less passionate (like the cut one) or deliberate (like the one in the medical room on Hoth). I decided not to really talk about the Luke/Leia kisses in 'Building Empire' as I felt that it has been covered to the point of cliche. The Easter Egg shows what I believe to be Lucas demostrating that he hadn't written the sibling relationship into the story as early as you might think.

Where is that easter egg? Could you pm me to let me know? I have looked all around for it, but didn't want to just track it down in the VOB's.

I'll help.

Isn't Irvin Kershner a great commentator? He's just fun to listen to. I really enjoyed the quotes selected for this release. One that really cracked me up was the "creepy robot arm" remark from the end of the movie.

Some other quotes (from Wikipedia):

"Of all the younger guys around, all the hot-shots, why me? I remember he said, 'Well, because you know everything a Hollywood director is supposed to know, but you're not Hollywood.' I liked that." - explaining why George Lucas chose him to direct The Empire Strikes Back.

"I like to fill up the frame with the [characters'] faces. There's nothing more interesting than the landscape of the human face."

Here's a random question, but is Irvin Kershner Jewish?

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time

I'm capturing the material from the widescreen VHS tape now.

On this tape, the Thief has been taped over another movie, which is timecoded but not on the picture. At the end of the tape you see the end of the other movie, which has some adult material in it. An IMDB search shows that the film is called The Hour of the Pig (aka The Advocate) starring Colin Firth.

Here's something ultra rare for you:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVYQSI9Xhho

The Allied Filmmakers trailer for the film.

I'm not sure if this trailer was ever used or released. From the clips shown, it refers to the rare Australian version of the film, normally known as The Princess and the Cobbler. On the same VHS tape was a copy of this cut of the film, with the "Thief" title on it instead. Fred Calvert's version of the film, the "Princess" cut is definitely not what Richard Williams intended, but is much better than what Miramax released as Arabian Knight/The Thief and the Cobbler.

Interestingly, this trailer has a shot of King Nod peeking out of a pink tent which doesn't appear in the released versions of the film - but was in Richard Williams' workprint.

Are you re-recobbling, then?

I can't stress again how much I enjoyed this. What a great movie - it's a shame more people aren't familiar with it. Obviously, this project has helped though.

I can't believe how atrocious some of the songs (featured in the official trailer) were - thanks for removing them. "This is what happens when you don't go to school" - that is just dumb.

I think you commented on this somewhere, but it's interesting that Declan Mulholland and Clive Reveill (sp?) featured in this film, and their parts were also hacked up. Bad luck for them, I guess.

Why did you use Sean Connery? What was the source for that? Just curious.

Why don't you try to find an FTP trader as it would be MUCH faster then torrents.

Good point. I'm adding to my original request - anyone with an FTP interested in trading, feel free to contact me, also.

What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?
Time

Like the title asks, I am wondering what SE changes (if any) people here did like or at least enjoy, even if they would still like the original films unaltered?

Personally, I much preferred the subtle changes (womp rats scampering around as the speeder buzzes into Mos Eisley, the bantha herd by Jabba’s sail barge, “Close the blast doors,” and general effects fixes - garbage mattes, cell block perspective, etc.)
