I'd agree with your description - on the other hand, though, if dumb little slave-boy Anakin on BF Tatooine can pick out Qui-Gon Jinn as a Jedi (based on his "laser sword" and not some sort of psychic Jedi-gaydar), they can't be that hard to spot.

Info & Offer: ANH CBS Anniversary Airing w/ bumpers and commercials... for anyone?

I would love to see that, personally - I think that is the one that my Mom taped for me when I was little, so it was my first SW exposure.

As I'm sure it was for a lot of us younger folks around here, it's just that extra little bit of nostalgia that makes it all worth the while. I like the idea of capping the entire presentation from start to finish - it shouldn't be too difficult, I can bring it straight into FCP from my deck with ease. I'll delve more into the How To technical forums once the tape makes it out here, but I'm sure cleaning up VHS video from a broadcast source is a pretty painstaking process?

EDIT: The best I can figure is that it's this airing per markhamill.com "CBS Broadcast of Star Wars [February 26, 1984] TV Guest Host of the first network airing of Star Wars. The opening and ending report given by Mark has been nicknamed the "Star Wars Wrap Around" it included an exclusive look at the behind the scenes of the movie. He also talks about what the Trilogy has meant to him."

That sounds about right - we taped it at least a few years before we moved, and that was in 1987 - I remember watching it at our old house, so I hope that time marker helps.

We edited the commercials off when we taped it, though - I remember it because whenever I watch SW now, I am always surprised that there aren't obvious commercial cuts "editing" it differently based off of the bad pause-play recording.

What version is the sound mix? Some of the lines are different, I think, than most versions - for instance, I think what the stormtroopers say when checking Mos Eisley houses is different (or more like the mono mix?). This might just be bad memory on my part, but I think there might be some differences.

Why the PT fans love the PT so much, not as diehard as we think

I think the majority of hardcore PT fans are sad, disillusioned youths who grew up in white, upper middle-class suburbia and can identify with Anakin because they also know how frustrating it can be when you lock your iPod in your Humvee.

Absolute gold. That is worthy enough to be a signnature.

Ha! Thanks. I don't want it for mine, but if anyone really wants to associate that closely with the PT, they are welcome to it.

Hi, all- I'm fairly new here and still learning the ropes. While I was at home digging through tapes for the Ghostbusters preservation over on the Misc thread, I recently came across my old VHS copy of the CBS airing of A New Hope (best I can figure it was for the ten year anniversary in 1987?) which includes specially filmed bumpers and behind the scenes material during the feature. Not to mention the very dated and entertaining commercials from head to tail.

Is this video pretty commonplace or is there anyone out there that needs it? Seeing everyone's awesome projects they've been working on, I almost wonder if I should put an edit of it together?

Terrible scene, and useless, regardless of the character name.

1. That's one budget alien getup. Sketchy even by Star Trek standards. In fact, paint him blue, and I believe he is a Star Trek alien. You know, the white haired ones. And his voice sucks too.
2. Obi-Wan says he's going to the bar for a drink. We don't need to see him get there and order it.
3. I know the Jedi uniform isn't standardized, but most Coruscanti should know what one generally looks like. It's like trying to sell crack to uniformed police officer. Doesn't happen.

All good points.

I've got the dumbest idea EVER!

If you buy the Original Trilogy DVD's in September, ship the 2004 editions that were packaged with them back to Lucasfilm with a letter stating you didn't receive the bonus discs (you got 2 copies of the 2004 editions in your box) and that you'd like the bonus discs shipped to you. Back up copy BABY! Okay... I'll go back in the corner.

Actually, that might work, as sad as it is. If you ever scratch your DVD's, all you have to do is buy a new copy from a store, then bring your original discs back with your new receipt and say, "What's wrong with this thing? It won't play in my player - I think it's because of this scratch - can I get a new copy?" Then, they give you a fresh copy in the package, which you can in turn bring back anywhere to exchange unopened for store credit to get something entirely different. I'm not saying go do this - or that I ever have - but it's a pretty simple grift.

Toby was the guy in the Yellow top controlling Jabba's left arm and the head swivel.

Thanks guys for your input. This is as much your project as it is mine (well...you know what I mean).

I would definitely ask him what it feels like to have been a part of the SW phenomenon.

Personally, I like the character of Elan, it is just the name that is stupid. But that is really just an issue of the credits, which I don't read. Not at home at least. And Death Sticks is a great name for a drug. It seems like it is something that they would call it.

Just curious - can you think of another drug that has "death" in the name?

Well, heck. It seems like he had a front row to all that was shot. I just don't know how much he would have been able to have seen. Can you ask him about some of the cut scenes? Would he know if, for instance, much of the 'lightman' stuff was filmed? Peter Diamond followed 3PO down the corridor to the throne room. Would Toby have seen anything like this? Was it him in the From Star Wars to Jedi special who was smoking the cigar?

Would he have been around for the scene of Luke hanging from the Rancor pit grate? Maybe I'm thinking too linear and assuming those things were actually in the same location as they were in the movie, but I thought they showed a view of Jabba's face through the bars.

Thanks for responding to my questions. You answered a lot of the open-ended things that I was concerned about. I still have some reservations, but I'll be saving them till I see the finished product...unless you go way out on something, that is.

As for Elan Slezabaggano - I think the reason people don't like him is because he makes them feel uncomfortable - who knows though? Maybe outside of the context of the original film's bad editing, he won't be another nail in the coffin. I just don't think death sticks is a very good name for a drug, but that's just me - can you get another voice actor to replace that word?

Really glad to hear you took out "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and that you are using rarer languages than German. I just think that anything that stands out as being from something else recognizable takes you out of the movie. I'm glad that you are using lesser known music to fill in your gaps though.

Your new Yoda idea was great. It's the best you can do without making your own puppet.

Either RealPlayer or the RealAlternative Codec (much better IMO), which allows you to play the file in MediaPlayer.

I'll vouch for Real Alternative, too - I've never had any problems with it, and there's no extra junk from it.

All things aside, this doesn't change our focus or determination to finish our project. If nothing else, perhaps other preservationists and fan editors will find it a useful tool in their own projects.

I would think the "title" color bars would be the give-away - I've not seen that posted in any of your stuff so far. If that's what the title screen looks like, it looks like someone got a copy - but how? Kind of creepy.
