Sure it does. If nothing else, it means just as much as "You wanna buy some death sticks?"

I mean, if someone said, "You wanna buy some rocks?" you would probably know what they meant. I didn't think of this till now, but sticks on its own makes a nice direct connection to rocks ("sticks" and "stones"). I mean, drug slang isn't necessarily supposed to be clear, especially if it is an alien drug.

It's just like in "Minority Report" when they talk about Tom Cruise's character being "a cop on the whiff" - you don't have to know what whiff is, just to know that it's a drug, and you can tell by the way they say it. Hopefully, you still can here - maybe not, though.

I guess I just really hate this part of the movie, though, so I am probably pretty biased. I could be wrong.

Anyway, I do agree that the term "death sticks" is someone inane for the name of a drug. The problem is, the words are said three times, twice by the alien and once by Kenobi. Replacing it will likely not work. The only thing I can think of is shortening it to "sticks." Maybe it's a slang word.

"You want to buy some sticks?"
"You don't want to sell me sticks."

Maybe that would work?

I like that.

Info & Offer: ANH CBS Anniversary Airing w/ bumpers and commercials... for anyone?

Luke hears Obi-Wan, switches off his computer, Vader gets clipped, Han tells Luke he's all clear, suddenly the Falcon's nose-diving into the exhaust port and Nein Nunb is proclaiming "mwhut!" -- then what gets me is that about the time the Star Destroyer crashes into the Death Star surface, awful awful VCR edit back to the Throne Room...

Someone get me that time machine.

Don't hold me to it, but I may be able to somehow provide the missing portions of the movie. Ever since I read about this project, I've been trying to track down my VHS - I will let you know if it is the same when I find it. Good luck! I personally would still like to see the full movie with everything inserted.

Well tape now in hand, I can confirm that it's from the 1984 showing. How do I know? After pulling the tape out and using precision carbon-dating techniques... no... I could only wish. The first commercial break (following Magic Johnson's fond ode to R2-D2 "I really dug on R2, he's my boy.") There's an exclusive first look at Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan coming March 30th... Greystoke, of course, being released in 1984. Jackpot. The only catch is that the recording on the tape starts immediately at the Fox fanfare... no intro. And for some reason, even at a young age, I decided to re-edit the trench run to include Lando flying the Falcon into the Death Star, figure that one out... But everything else is firmly in place. Hamill in his tux on a "set" closing things up is also on the tape. (And I'm sure everyone's dying to hear Valeri Bertinelli talk about the first time she saw Star Wars and how R2 and 3PO remind her of Laurel and Hardy.)

I'm just amazed at how well this tape has withstood the test of time. The reels may have yellowed and the tracking may phase in and out but it's still in fantastic shape given it's age...

So given that the feature is somewhat incomplete (man did I F with the continuity having Lando show up or what) maybe I should do a transfer of the bumpers and commercials? Put together a mini-featurette of sorts?

Did you tape Lando OVER the footage, or splice him in between footage?

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time
However, it might be within this site's rules:

"A preservation effort is an attempt to procure the best sources available for films not yet on DVD and convert them into viable, non-official releases to tide the public over until an official release is made. Preservation efforts should always be considered a temporary measure to be replaced with an official release when the studio catches up with demand; they are not a permanent part of your media library."

However again:

"6. Before obtaining any fan edits, you must be in ownership of the official retail release."

I don't know for sure.

How much would be the cost of buying the scanner on its own and the necessary equipment to store the scan? In addition, I'm sure some film scanning facilities would accept the job if they are run by someone who feels similarly to the folks here. *

* This is all hypothetical since it is in regards to copyrighted material that has never been released for general public consumption, unlike the Laserdiscs.

I think Mielr asked about that as well a while back. We have a copy of the original film, as well as a collection of film cells for reference. We also have a few other things that I will not get into at this time.

you guys have a copy of the film. *now I'm gonna be noisey* Is it pre ANH? And What is the audio mix?

Thanks for getting this back on topic.

I may be able to help with this. Give me a day or two.

"Then the Emperor has already won..."

Seriously, though, I hope this doesn't turn into a Mac vs. Windows debate. This is a shame no matter what the operating system.

I really hope that nothing has been corrupted/deleted, or very little. This is such a great project.

I am away on business and have been reading up about this problematic update which has been causing problems for people across the world.

Several posts mention that the system disc can become corrupted and that there will be data loss.

Some of 'Returning to Jedi' is on my external drives but there is also some on my main system drive along with everything else.

This could mean there is a massive delay on it's release or it could mean that I will not have the time or motivation to start again.

I will bring you up to date when I get back home on wednesday.

This is awful news.

I had always thought that Macs were virtually immune to those types of problems.

Info & Help Wanted: The ESB Wampa Sub-Plot - C-3PO Dialogue - anyone have them?
Time

Does any audio of any kind exist of C-3PO saying any of his lines from the ESB wampa sub-plot? Particulary, “This is where they keep those creatures?” Anything similar, or anything anyone can think of from elsewhere in the saga approximating that line (such as “Dreadful creatures!”) would help me out. Thanks!

Knowing that there are prints being kept in appropriate conditions gives an incentive to go on campaigning, don't you think?

And the nice thing is, there is nothing keeping them from making their own "backup" digital transfers/clean-ups of these, since that is protected by copyright law.

Anyone know anyone who works for the BFI?

Of course, so does my bitching, I guess.

I'll second that - I thought it was irritating back when I was on dial-up and someone had a huge gif of Palpatine getting knocked over his chair on his ass. It was funny, but not practical.

As for Ryu vs. Sagat, I don't get it. I mean, I played Street Fighter II like crazy, and I didn't see this big rivalry, definitely not enough to warrant "Eternal Enemies," and definitely definitely not enough to warrant having a three inch pic every time Ingo posts.

Ingo's been getting a pretty hard time nearly everywhere I've seen him post. I don't mean him any ill will. I just hate that picture.

What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?

Yeah, I always thought waiting to see Jabba created suspense- we always hear about this guy, but who is he? What does he look like? Seeing him in ANH is anti-climactic.

What were the changes in the cell-block perspective??

I agree - he gets mentioned in passing in both ANH and ESB - no reason to beat us over the head. He and Boba Fett sure get shoved into any cranny GL wants, it seems like, and I think that's a good description of how it makes the fans feel, too.

(And that's not even mentioning his "appearance" in The Phantom Menace, along with a busty companion Hutt - despite the fact Hutts are hermaphroditic, according to SW.com - whatever).

The cell block on the Death Star, when shown in a straight-down-the-barrel shot, has a slightly different perspective angle and vanishing point, making it more realistic. Very subtle.

If the timer has already started on the color bar screen, how is this useful for anyone outside of the X0 Project team? I can understand wanting it for posterity, but I think unless you time your project accordingly (to take into account for the color bar time offset), it is not of much practical use. Maybe I'm not understanding something, though.

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)

Cheers Esn. I'm surprised anyone noticed the differences from Youtube to the DVD, which are almost nonexistent.

Some music was changed after the Rough Cut because I got a lot of complaints about using Robert Folk's score for Arabian Knight in this film. I continued to use the Folk score where I thought it would work, but I wound up changing or removing it in a few places, like in the pipes, to show the critics I was listening to them! The replacement music was always less cheesy, but there can be something visceral about cheese, if used properly.

The Youtube version uses the final music for the most part - but the curious can check out the old Recobbled Rough Cut DVD, which had my first attempt at music on it.

Speaking of music - what is the music playing during the menu and key points in the movie?

This is a lot of fun. Thanks for putting it together. I'd never seen it before. It blows me away how much James Earl Jones sound like Vader in thus, versus the terrible Vader dubbing for the 1997/2004 SE's and ROTS.

Also, isn't it great how they recycle Piett for the on-screen convo with Vader, then have a really annoying-looking actor do a weird little head bow/nod when he finished speaking to Vader? So cheesy, but great.
