Do you want to do it Andy? I have lots of ongoing projects at the moment. I will of course provide any help I can.

Thanks
JD

I could try, but I've got some other things I need to finish first before starting another project. I will keep it on my backburner, though. Thanks! I'm sure I'll ask for help when I get to it.

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

This whole debate strikes me as kind of a painting vs. photography argument. At the dawn of any new technology with similar applications as an older technology, invariably people will begin to argue that either the new will permanently replace the old or that the old will remain and any new technology is inferior or just a fad.

However, like painting and photography, both film and digital offer unique advantages and disadvantages depending on what your goals are. As already mentioned, video can be significantly cheaper for low budget pictures or pictures with a high number of visual effects. However, film still offers better resolution, dynamic range and color space than video can currently muster.

Both of these formats give you certain things for "free" that the other doesn't. It's very difficult to replicate the grainy, softer look of film on video whereas it can happen automatically for film. Conversely, video can keep everything in sharp focus, which can be desirable to some film makers. Orson Welles and his cinematographer Gregg Toland struggled to keep the entire frame in focus for "Citizen Kane," even going so far as to use optical mattes to achieve the effect when it could not be produced in-camera.

To denounce either film or video as inferior or ugly is to ignore the inherent qualities of both. We should appreciate that each format has its advantages and shortcomings and neither will replace the other.

So anyway....about that 35mm preservation?

I'm with you - welcome to the boards, by the way, if you've not been welcomed already.

I have never shot film on either digital or analog formats, but even not knowing anything, I am sure there are good qualities for each.

As far as the "feel" that actual film lends towards a...film, I am also sure that it is there and is something that is not really replicable, even with filters and grains and post-processing. The OT vs. the PT is a great example. No matter how good a job digital post-processing does, there is still only so much randomness most editing programs can create, so you end up with the same scratch in the same place periodically, the static grain starts to make a pattern, etc. - or - you end up with a movie that looks like a plastic playset (AOTC/ROTS).

My laserdisc is missing the former line. It makes me sad.

It would be fairly simple to splice in the "Close the blast doors!" line on a DVD backup of your set.

Look at Robocop. The ED-209 stop motion may look dated, but the practical effects by Rob Bottin on Robocop himself are as impressive as ever. An American Werewolf in London is still arguably the best werewolf transformation ever filmed (CGI can seem to get werewolves right), Alien is as breathtaking and terrifying as it ever was, and the full-body shot of the queen in James Cameron's Aliens is more impressive than anything in the prequel trilogy. CGI, when used carefully, is an interesting tool. But that doesn't mean that older effects techniques have no merit. One one hand, filmakers can now create anything that they can imagine. On the other, this means that they might not stop to think outside the box. An excellent review for The Road Warrior that I once read put it best. There is a certain viscer thrill that one can only get by banging two object together, and CG can't replace that.

That's basically the point I was trying to make with my signature. Except I don't know if you get a visceral thrill seeing Yoda bumping around his little house, but at least he looks like he is actually filling that physical space.

I love The Road Warrior too - can you imagine how crappy it would be done with CGI?

Thanks for the info! If you can find any, please post them here or make a new thread or pm me with them (or all three). Thanks again!

--minport 49152 --maxport 65535

Do I only need to change the range in my torrenting program, or do I also need to config my firewall, too?

See, I actually read those FAQ's but I still didn't get it.

Sorry - this stuff just isn't my area of expertise.

I will try a different client though to see if it works out better (i.e. makes more sense).

Otherwise, if anyone could give step-by-step instructions on how to do my config, I would still be really appreciative.

Fox France confirms the French OOT release >NOT< to be anamorphic

I just called Lucasfilm using the number Jay provided on the front page. A guy answered saying he couldn't answer my question (is France getting anamorphic versions?) and that he didn't know who to connect me to that could, since he can only connect using names, not people's positions. When I asked if he could connect me to PR, he said he wasn't sure if they had one.

WTF?

Anyway, that number I called was (415) 662-1800.

A number I was given in the past for the PR department was (415) 623-1962. An answering machine picks up there, confirming that it is Lucasfilm's PR department and that people should leave a message or write an email.

It's like, 2:22 p.m. there right now - not lunchtime. Do you think they switched to automated answering after the first wave of the non-anamorphic debacle?

I am going to try that first number again to see if I get a different person.

I am using the program BitTorrent itself.

See, I don't know if it allows port forwarding because I haven't been able to get it to work. I vaguely remember trying to set something up so that it opened the ports in the 1200 or 12000 range (don't remember which), but when I noticed no difference in my dl/ul speeds, I closed them again. I don't honestly know how to coordinate between my windows firewall settings and my torrent program settings. No tutorials have been able to help me, either. On top of everything else, I am running McAfee AV too, if that makes a difference.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM

"And here's a little something that's very interesting: Our friend Arnaud Calistri, who runs the DVDRama.com website in France, e-mailed me yesterday to say that Fox France has confirmed with him that the original versions of the Star Wars films to be released on DVD there will be in anamorphic widescreen (enhanced for widescreen 16x9 TVs). As many of you know, they were announced for release here in the States and elsewhere in non-anamorphic (letterboxed) widescreen only, causing a furor among fans (and rightly so). This news, if true, means one of two things: Either Lucasfilm quickly got their act together when fans complained and created new anamorphic masters for the DVD release everywhere (and it just hasn't been announced here in the States yet), or France is getting better DVDs that the rest of the world. If they DID get their act together, expect Lucasfilm's fan relations guru, Steve Sansweet, to make a massive deal about it the company's Star Wars panel at Comic-Con next week. If they DIDN'T get their act together, and France IS getting better discs, expect fans to make a massive deal about it. We'll ask all the right people to see if we can find out the truth of the matter. Of course, we'll let you know."

Cripes!

That would be cool if it is true that they have changed their minds!

However, Europe has been into widescreen TV's longer than Americans - maybe they are cow-towing to the European audience

Hopefully they won't issue the Euro DVD's with those nasty 80's airbrush covers with the giant heads, though.

Or, maybe they should, if Europe will be the only region getting anamorphic. With Lucas post-1996 there is always some drawback, right?

I never got it so I cannot seed, but here's a piece of friendly advice:
trip42 is seeding it. You can't see each other because you're both behind firewalls.
I think it's the seeder's prerogative to use a firewall if he chooses, and the leechers (if they want it badly enough) should configure their own firewalls properly to allow the seeders to connect to them.

When the pizza delivery guy knocks, do you open the door for him ?
Or do you refuse and sit inside starving, safe behind your firewall ?

I didn't realize that. Thanks for pointing it out.

How can I configure my firewall properly? I am new to torrenting (and high-speed internet in general) so I am not surprised that I did not have this figured out.

When I first started torrenting, I read some information of configuring the firewall properly, but I was never able to understand it/figure it out - I started torrenting and it worked so I just ran with it.

If someone could pm me or email me with detailed, newbie instructions on how to do this, I would really appreciate it. I am running Windows XP, using BitTorrent and I have SBC DSL, with a 2wire modem/firewall unit.

Despite all this, my share ratio has been at least 1:1 whenever possible (like, until my hard drive fills).

Thanks for putting up with me!

I had neither of these problems. My bet is that your download became corrupted, or there was an error in your authoring process.

Some random things I really liked:
- the 20th Century Fox Records logo replacing the regular Fox fanfare
- the menus
- use of alternate subtitle colors
- the still shots for certain scenes (especially that ridiculous face Han is making as he is leading Imperials back to Yavin unknowingly - where did that come from?)

I hope that I can create something this cool, nice and professional someday.
