The JSC raw dump is done and I've already synced it visually with the '04 DVD so I can test the additive experiment I'm working on.

Expect JSC direct samples tomorrow in MP4 and a raw avi sample for the nerds.

The picture is from the JSC.

Impossible. That would have required manual IVTC skills of a magnitude greater than anything I've ever heard of before.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

I remember in the early days of the internet GL would participate in online chats talking about the franchise and relating to the fans.  I wish the man would come here and post some of his thoughts and at least engage in some dialogue about the issues.  Instead he just hides behind corporate cronies putting out propaganda and refusing to communicate with his fans.

well i don't own the best player in the world but mine offers about 54db of video s/n ratio which is on par with any laserdisc player ever made.

The best thing to do with a laserdisc capture imo is capture it raw, adjust the colors, brightness, and contrast and then watch it and appreciate it for what it is. Upscaling it and filtering it almost always looks bad compared to the GOUT.

I'm not trying to discourage anyone from trying it but once you start to work with editing it and you stack it next to the GOUT or SE you will always be a bit disappointed.

That guy with the "white magic" claimed it was all done in avisynth but i could never get him to post his script used in the process. That doesn't really fit into the spirit of this website imo.

Layering different versions over each other is difficult but is achievable.  Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that the only thing worth salvaging was the chroma from the GOUT to be overlaid onto the SE. I'm still kind of tinkering with it and have found a couple other programs that work better at image registration than avisynth.

I agree with dark_jedi on the laserdiscs.  They are pretty worthless.  The JSC is nice to watch because of the lack of dvnr but the level of grain makes me think it is not a good source print.  Also it is next to impossible to ivtc unless you know how to manually do it.  The GOUT DVD is the best there is imo. I have captured the DC, JSC, and FACES editions with the hope of attaining something to work with but it always eventually gets scrapped because of the limitations of the Laserdisc.  In order to get things to look halfway decent you are going to have to filter it and in turn erase detail.

I wish there was a poll to see how many people changed their minds about the SE being a good thing after this leak.  If the percentages are low I'd be shocked.  They'll probably still buy it cause they are younger than us who've owned these movies on 4 or more video formats. What a sad thing Star Wars has become.

Is this something LucasFilm is playing to, in order to create demand for the theatricals later?

I believe that it is a possibility. It maybe isn't what he intended when he started down his current path in '97. I don't really care what smoke and mirrors game he's playing as long as he releases them. I really would rather some of these collector's that own prints would just collaborate and release an awesome HD version online and call it the FUG Edition. At least the quality control would probably be better.

How did you imagine The Star Wars Prequels before they came out?
Time

I imagined that the PT would have a used universe feel to them similar to the OT.

I expected Anakin to be an adult and also someone who was a moral person with unwavering ideals. Him and Obi-Wan should have been the best of friends. It should have been an extraordinary feat for him to have been turned to the dark side.  It should have been a real tragedy that happened to him.  Instead we just see him as a little kid with no real input. A real waste of screen time.  Then we jump to him as an adolescent and it's clear that it didn't take very much to coerce him to the dark side as he already had that tendency. I don't really feel that bad for him, he kind of deserved all the bad things that happened to him. He's kind of a whiny little shit-head if you ask me. His transformation to Vader even consists of him continuously being a whiny little shit-head. There was no great fall of a hero to the dark side.  Just a selfish and jealous little shit-head fulfilling his destiny of becoming a sith lord.

I expected there to be an interesting story but subconsciously i knew that was never going to happen.  The only thing i really needed to take away from the prequels was the back story laid down by obi-wan in the OT which took him less that 2 minutes to explain. There was really no suspense in any of the PT for me.  I've known since i was about 10 (I'm 32 now) that obi-wan would defeat Darth Vader on a volcano/lava planet from reading little snippets and books.

Actually, I'd expect them to never get made.  They are totally anti-climactic and only decimate the experience of the OT. I don't recall once actually caring about any character or plot arc in any of the prequels.  I may have tried to convince myself of it for a couple years until i saw episode II. We all wanted the PT to be great didn't we? Years ago Lucas himself said that he'd made a grand story and that the first half wasn't really interesting so he started off where things were interesting and just used the first half as a back story to flesh out the OT movies.

Moving forward in the series would really have been the only way to engage the audience by bringing back the world of star wars yet offering a story that hadn't already been hashed over.

Just my opinion.

I am personally happy to hear about all of the changes to this edition.  The more he changes the more it will irritate the newer generation into realizing that film revisionism is never a good thing unless the original film is still available.  These new editions are nothing more than a novelty and that's all they ever will be even 100 years from now.  A foray into the capabilities of early digital moviemaking.  Nothing more, nothing less.  The originals will survive in some capacity and will go down in the annals of history as the cultural landmarks that they were/are.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

It would be interesting if someone were to set up a website dedicated to collecting money to be used for the restoration of the unaltered original trilogy and present Lucas with the cash when the funds met the correct amount.  If he didn't accept it then I believe we would know for sure that all hope is lost. At least in our lifetimes.  I wish there was a way to reach the man and have him understand what he's done.  I'm sure his perspective on the films is totally different than ours.  He is probably tired of hearing about them and would rather be a father to his children at his age. He probably just enjoys them as a source of income for his family now.  I'm just brainstorming about the situation here.  I know Robert Harris offered to restore them for free and was never contacted by LFL.  If a worldwide collaboration of fans offered the means to do it, it would definitely make a profound statement about what the fans want. It might even just simply shame them into doing it.

Random thoughts from a desperate fan lol.

I do hope that jar jar is in every single frame of all 6 movies of this new release.

Everybody here was saying that the blu-ray.com forum was being a bit biased about this release and i must now concur with that conclusion. You can't even put in your 2 cents without getting told by a moderator to stop unless it involves saying the following: "I love these movies and I hope they have changed more stuff this time around."

It's really weirding me out.  It's like there is some agenda going on.  Are millions of people on the LFL payroll?

If you live in Europe and are trying to get ahold of the JSC you can try tradera, I believe the set is up for sale there right now.

True, but this site of soooo Swedish, I don't understand a word of it.

you can open the page via google translate and it should make sense enough to navigate around.  Of course if you were planning on buying them you would have to open an account and ask the person if you could pay via paypal and have them shipped internationally.

Info: Yet another restoration... is it <em>REALLY</em> needed?
Time

I'm kind of a noob in these forums myself but I'd say since you own one of the highest end LD players available to man, it would probably worthwhile to continue with your project since I'm not sure if some of these have been captured with the x9.  Would you be interested in posting the avisynth script you are using so that we can all see what you are working with? I'm not the best scripter but if i see something wrong or know a better way to do something i will let you know.

BTW, since this is a laserdisc oriented thread, I'd like to ask if anyone here has the technical knowledge to give me a definite answer on my laserdisc player.  I have the cld-hf9g and have heard rumors that it has a direct composite out but I can't seem to verify this. I can say that when I hook up to the composite it seems to be a direct out because the picture is sharper and it even looks like it's bypassing the TBC because the picture is quite jittery compared to the s-video out(w/ all possible filtering turned off).
