Watching star wars - frame-by-frame slow motion : Cool stuff
Time

How many have noticed this one?

3po and r2 are crossing the corridor on the tantive and getting shot at from both sides by the rebels and the stormtroopers.  They both make it to the other side just as a laser blast explodes near the doorway they just entered.  In this exact second the blast hits there is a few frames missing.  If you look at the troopers and toggle back and forth during the laser blast you'll see them all standing and shooting in one frame and the very next frame a couple are laying on the ground and the others are all in totally different positions.

Yeah I guess that's a continuity error but still one of those things you'd never see unless you stepped through frame by frame.

Droids Series Complete Set. Reconstruction from multiple sources. V1.0 is out! (Released)

Does anybody have any ideas as to how best to proceed with deblending these frames?  We played around with them a little in the previous Droids&Ewoks thread but it looked a little hopeless.  The frame blending is just out of control.

Have you tried the AnimeIVTC plugin for avisynth? I've had luck with it sometimes.  After finding the right settings I always make sure killcomb is set to 1.

I wonder if it's possible to re-engineer the Bezier curves used to build a font? The advantage of course would be scalability to any desired size without artifacts.

If I'm not mistaken you can draw/trace them in photoshop or something as a vector graphic and then scale it to whatever size you want and then rasterize it at whatever resolution you want.

It's Official: George Lucas hates his fans :P
Time

I would drop a few bucks into the donation pot as long as the message was clear that the fans want the original unaltered trilogy and it was worded appropriately.

He can make changes every year to the films if he wants and I'd probably buy them.  As it stands now, I'll never buy anything from him again just as a matter of principle until he does this one thing for the fans.

Need help making custom AviSynth DLL
Time

Well I don't think there is anything official about avisynth.  It's just a bunch of guys that work together on the program and it's filters.  If you go to the avisynth development forum the guy that made vsfilter probably is there and they all exchange information freely so it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't think you need a custom dll made though you could probably accomplish this with a script or a function in avisynth. I've never used vsfilter but i'll take a look at it.  If I see a way to do it i'll let you know.  I'd still go to the development forum and see what they've got to say about it though.

Info: Original Trilogy on CED preservations? (3 OT CED released projects in here)
Time

I'm digging these releases almost as much as my JSC laserdiscs.  There isn't much noise in the picture considering it is an analog medium.  Did you do some post processing on these to reduce noise?

EDIT: Nevermind I should have read up the whole thread first before asking about the post processing.  I'm impressed that these are raw captures except for the compression.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

The blu-ray release is only a part of his master plan to destroy all that is good.

Lucas has thousand of copies of the original 35mm prints at his house. He watches them every night and thinks about how awesome they are and how he is the only one that will ever get to see them again. He'll demand to be buried with all of them and at that time recall even the SE's and forbid it to be sold on any format for the rest of time.

Then, in true machiavellian form, he will return years later and claim that the movies had never even been made.  He will then proclaim that he is making them for the first time as he originally intended.  He will claim that it will be 9 movies but he will only make 6.  The first 3 will be the adventures of the gungan warrior jar-jar and the last 3 will be totally incoherent at best and people will wander from theatres moaning in agony after viewing them.

The "true fans" will rejoice and proclaim them masterpieces and go around telling everybody how they bought the 400 dollar boxset. When anyone questions them about the myth of the original trilogy from the late 20th century they will deny that they existed and claim that the new ones are all that matter because they are 100% cgi and capable of capturing the attention of 2 and possibly even 3 years olds.

I am not a time traveller but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

EDIT: This is to only be read in the voice of the cybernetic ghost of christmas past from the future. You are welcome.

What are you reading?
Time

When the Wheel of Time is finally finished I'm going to read it from start to end.  I stopped reading at around book 7 or 8 because I couldn't handle how bad it had gotten.  I hear the last few books are pretty good though.

I'm about due for another read of rendezvous with rama.  Might start it tonight actually.  Anybody who hasn't read it definitely needs to.  If you like sci-fi that is.

Thorr's 35 mm Star Wars Trilogy SE Trailer WQHD Restoration (Part-Finished)
Time

Hi Thorr,

I've purchased a 35mm clip that is approximately 2 minutes long from the original star wars and supposedly contains a scene of the two robots.  It should be arriving at my house sometime next week.

I'm very interested in the process you used to capture this trailer. Maybe I could apply it to this film clip I've bought.  Are you using any commercial equipment or are you using a diy approach? I'm not willing to spend a lot of money on this but if it involves some off the shelf stuff that is rather easy to acquire I'd definitely invest in it.

Idea: 35mm Transfer - make a preservation project from it?
Time

I just bought a 35mm clip of Star Wars(1977) on ebay that is currently being shipped to me.  It stated it was only a couple minutes long and featured the robots.  This sounds to me like the desert scene.

When it arrives I was thinking of making a diy slide copier and using my 8mp digital camera to capture each frame.  I guess it would take a long time to capture the frames this way but if it's under 2 minutes I think it's achievable even if it takes a couple weeks. Does anybody have any thoughts, ideas, or advice about this idea?

If it seems to be in pristine condition or something I might hold off and think about what to do with it. I imagine it is in rough shape though.

09/11/2001-09/11/2011 Ten Years Later
Time

I heard about a plane hitting the 1st tower on the way to work and it sounded like a small plane had just clipped the building.  By the time I'd got to work and we turned on the radio they reported a second plane hitting the 2nd tower.  My boss went to a pawn shop and bought a tv and we all watched in horror most of the work day. I felt totally helpless and deeply sad that day for all of those people that were there.

About 1 year later my relationship with my soon to be wife ended and I thought, I'm single and I'll feel bad about it the rest of my life if I don't do something to help all the people in the forces overseas fighting to prevent tragedies like this. So i joined the Army and did what I could to help.

There is nothing that can ever ease the pain of the families of the victims. I can only hope that something like this never happens again.

I don't know anybody that was personally affected by the attack.  I don't feel like I need to. They were all human and all deserved a fair chance at life.

Methods for colour matching/colour grading
Time

There is a freeware Java program I'm not sure has been mentioned here before.  It is called ImageJ but the version that includes all the plugins installed already is called FIJI.  It has some of the most configurable image registration options I've ever seen in a freeware program.  I've used it to align images and do a direct chroma copy between the GOUT and SE.  It's a bit tricky to get the right settings at first and you'd probably have to read up a bit on what all the settings are.

You can go HERE to get an idea of what is involved in using this method.

The most interesting part about automating film footage alignment using macros is at the bottom.

I also use the MOPS feature extraction plugin to get features from both images and then feed it to the bunwarpj plugin for better alignment.

Unfortunately you have to use the RGB colorspace with this program.

**EDIT:

I found a nice tutorial video HERE that shows and describes all of the advanced functions for the plugin.  It even shows how to make landmarks and feed it to the unwarp plugin for greater accuracy.

This review is from: Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Episodes I-VI) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
If you truly want to watch the old and original versions watch them on their original format. The way they were meant to be watched on VHS!

By wanting the original works of the movies on Blu-ray you are essentially being a hypocrite. You say Lucas shouldn't revise his master pieces, but on the other hand you want his original works to be changed into HD on Blu-ray? So many overrating hypocrites, you people are people being ridiculous.

Oh, and by the way it is his Saga of movies and he can do whatever he wants with it. You people have no right telling him what he is doing is wrong when you would not even have Star Wars if it weren't for him. Its disgusting how these so called "die hard fans" are so quick to downgrade any Lucas does with his own works.
