On the topic of the canyon set piece - I was wondering if anything had been done, specifically, in regards to the issue which I raised here (concerning the rhythm of that sequence). Harmy contributed a really great mockup, making use of rotation, that went some way to addressing my concern; I had really hoped that something similar might be incorporated for ESB:R. Just figured I'd highlight this again, in case it got lost in the shuffle.

One thing to remember; i hardly ever show clips that are 100% finished. I may say they are, but i'm always tweaking. I don't want to ruin things by showing most of the film before it's out .

I hadn't seen that harmy had posted a mock-up ( was that in here?) so i haven't checked that out yet. I have added a slight zoom and rotation to the two final canyon shots so it's a little closer to the original now. The TIE collision is in-between the original speed and the slower speed now too. The Canyon is also darker

I do have one final question re the film, the other day I saw a cool trailer for Harmy's ANH fan-edit, the despecialized film, impressive!! Not seen it before. What I found extra cool was the trailer itself, he had put up FX and compositing wipes that explained how he and his helpers composited the shots/restored etc..

Wondering if one day you plan on making a similar trailer/making of? Your film i know will be fantastic beyond belief, but a making of documentary, well, I think that would be insane! with all your models and extra scenes etc.. (not sure if this is already happening, but it would be a giant on the internet.

There will be a short making of doc and an effects breakdown reel in the special features

This isn't a new suggestion, only something that I brought up a long time ago and again recently, but on both occasions I feel it got buried.

Ady, I was wondering if you also agreed with the inconsistency of the lighting inside the asteroid cave and hopefully had a chance to give it some thought and attention.

I don't see that as a problem. If i was to make it match the lighting in the previous shot, then you wouldn't see anything and it would just be a black background  with the falcon and some highlights where the falcons lights hit the walls . A pretty boring composite. Just look on it as your eyes have adjusted for the light, or different exposure levels, especially when you haven't got the light source facing directly towards you ( which would make the walls look darker than they are in the first shot)

I've added a few lasers as they enter the canyon so the two shots blend in better than it did originally. I've also tweaked the canyon quite a bit since the clip was shown.

i think the asteroid shot is fine the way it is. There are slight time jumps throughout the trilogy.  I really don't understand why that shot would be a problem. I've never heard anyone complain about that shot since the film came out.

one thing i do have to say though is that it isn't worth coming up with any more suggestions for changes. The edit is locked down now. All that is left to do is finishing adding the models. No more changes or enhancements will be made apart from what is left to do.

It wasn't made into a soft circle. The shadow should not be a sharp as seen in that picture you posted. I just softened the edges to make it look less animated and more natural. The first shadow when they are flying over the asteroid surface would also not be detailed. In fact the shape of the falcon would pretty much be as it is given the fact that it's such an uneven surface. If it was flat then the shadow would be more defined, but it isn't. Look at the pic you posted and compare the falcons shadow to every other shadow. That sticks out like a ore thumb as it is too sharp

The "somehow i've always known line" is gone in ROTJ:R. I've never liked it. It just doesn't sit right with me. Actually, i don't think she should say anything at all during that section. She should seem shocked and speechless after what she has just been told, not the "oh yeh, i thought something seemed strange. duh" type of reaction.

The script from the art of star wars isn't actually the 4th draft as it was written. it was taken from one of the later cuts of the films, when the biggs scenes were still in. You'll probably find that the script on IMSDb was copied from the art of star wars. It's pretty obvious when you watch the film that it was not filmed the way it is in the art of star wars script, but was filmed the way the 4th draft of march 15th 1976.

The 4th draft of the script, which is the shooting script,  has the scene in the order i edited it also

BEN
Quickly son, they’re on the move.
41. OMITTED
42. INT. CAVE DWELLING – MAIN LIVING AREA

The small, spartan hovel, is cluttered with desert junk, but still manages to radiate an air of time worn comfort and security. Luke is in one corner repairing Threepio’s arm, as old Ben fiddles with Artoo.

BEN
Now let’s see if we can’t figure out what you are my little friend and where you came from.

LUKE
I saw part of a message he…

Luke is cut short, as the recorded image of the beautiful young rebel princess is projected from R-2′s face.

BEN
Yes, I seem to have found it.

Luke stops his work as the lovely girl’s image flickers before his eyes.
PRINCESS LEIA
General Obi-wan Kenobi, I present myself in the name of the royal family of Alderaan, and the Alliance to restore the Republic. I break your solitude at the bidding of my father Bail Antillies, Viceroy and Chairman of the Alderaan system. Years ago Commander you served the Republic in the Clone Wars. Now he begs you to aid us again in our most desperate hours. He would have you join him on our home planet Alderaan. You must go to him! I regret I am unable to present my father’s request to you in person… my mission to return with you has failed, information vital to the survival of the Alliance has been placed in this droid… my father will know how to retrieve it. I plead with you to see this R-2 unit safely delivered to Alderaan. You must help me, you are my last hope.

There is a little static and the transmission is cut short Old Ben leans back and scratches his head. He silently puffs on a tarnished chrome water pipe. Luke has stars in his eyes.

LUKE
She is so… terrific. Commander?? You fought in The Clone Wars??

BEN
Oh yes… I was once a Jedi knight… like your father.

LUKE
Jedi knight?? My father didn’t fight in the wars. He was a navigator…. on a spice freighter.

BEN
Oh so your Uncle told you .. He didn’t agree with your father’s ideals, thought he should have stayed here and not gotten involved. He was always afraid your father’s adventures might influence you ..

LUKE
I wish I’d known him…
BEN
He was the best starpilot in the galaxy and a clever warrior… he was a good friend. I understand you’ve become quite a good pilot yourself… in many ways you’re much like your father.

Ben gets up and goes to a chest, where he rummages around.

BEN (cont’d)
Which reminds me, I have something here for you. When you were old enough, your father wanted you to have this. I tried to give it to you but your uncle wouldn’t allow it. He believed you might follow old Obi-wan on some idealistic crusade as your father did.

Luke finishes repairing Threepio and starts to fit the restraining bolt back on, Threepio looks at him nervously, Luke thinks about the bolt for a moment then puts it on the table. Ben shuffles up and presents Luke with a short handle with several electronic gadgets attached to it.

THREEPIO
Sir, if you’ll not be needing me, I think I’ll shut down for a while.

LUKE
Sure, go ahead.
(to BEN)
What is it?

BEN
Your father’s light saber. At one time they were widely used… I believe they still are in some parts of the galaxy…

Luke pushes a button on the handle and a long laser beam shoots out about four feet, flickers there.

BEN (cont’d)
This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight… not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon… for a more civilized time.
(He begins to remember)
For over a thousand generations Jedi Knights were the most powerful, most respected force in the galaxy… the guardians of peace and justice in the old republic. That was when the galactic senate ruled the galaxy before the dark times, before the empire.
Luke hasn’t really been listening.

LUKE
How did my father die?

BEN
He was betrayed and murdered… by a young Jedi, Darth Vader. A boy I was training, one of my brightest disciples, one of my greatest failures… He used the power of the force for evil – to help the empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi knights, now the Jedi are all but extinct. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the force and it consumed him.

LUKE
The force??

BEN
The force is… let’s just say the force is something a Jedi deals with. It is an energy field created by living things – it surrounds us – it binds the galaxy together – it directs our actions. Knowledge of the force is what gives a Jedi his power. You must learn the ways of the force if you are to come with me to Alderaan.

LUKE
Alderaan!?? I’m not going to Alderaan. I’ve got to get back home! It’s late, I’m in for it as it is… you can take the droid… I’ll think of something to tell my uncle… I hope…

BEN
I need your help, Luke. I’m afraid I’m getting too old for this sort of thing ..

LUKE
I can’t get involved, I’ve got work to do. I mean I don’t like the empire… I hate it… but there is nothing I can do about it right now… it’s all such a long way from here.

BEN
That’s your uncle talking.
LUKE
Oh, my uncle. How am I going to explain all this.

BEN
Remember, the Force is with all men, it binds them together. The suffering of one is the suffering of all.

LUKE
I can take you as far as Anchorhead. You can get transport there to the spaceport at Mod Eisley or wherever you’re going…

BEN
You must do what you feel.

LUKE
Right now I don’t feel too good…

Regarding the Ben's hut scene, I'm a little confused. Everyone seems to say that ady's version follows the script. But it doesn't. I've looked at the script, the theatrical cut follows the scene exactly as it was written. However, ady's version does flow well and it seems as if the scene was shot with that sequence of dialogue in mind. Can someone clarify this for me?

Don't forget that the script was changed for publication to match the released film. Ady's version matches the shooting script - the script at time of filming.

If that's the case, why does the script include deleted material like Luke at Anchorhead? And even within that scene there are differences. For example, Ben says: "An elegant weapon, for a more civilized time."

Check the original novel , which was based off the final draft ( i thiink). Ben's hut scene starts with Leia's message

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

moviefreakedmind said:

I saw someone post this on hometheaterforums.com today. Not sure if this is completely accurate but I thought i'd post this here since it sounded interesting and has to do with the 4K restoration. I personally don't know what to believe because Wielage said that they wouldn't do a 4K release, but RMW did have on their website (not anymore) that they worked on 4K, so there's no way RMW would lie about that, which begs the question of when Mr. Wielage actually wrote this.

"I thought I would pass this information along.

Marc Wielage, who worked on the 2004 Star Wars masters, and has 35 years of video mastering experience within the industry (also having worked for Technicolor and Kodak), recently commented on AVS to my question of whether he had any knowledge of any 4K Star Wars work.  I won't post the link as I am not sure if that is allowed here, but he replied to me.

To my knowledge, no -- it was all 2K. Note that Episodes 2 and 3 were all shot on HD with 2K visual effects, and none of the VFX in any of the Star Wars films were more than 2K. Some of the early digital stuff in the 1990s wasn't even HD.
It's an interesting thought as to whether they'd consider rescanning 100% of the live-action film footage in Star Wars and recomping all the VFX in 4K. That would be a monstrous expense -- I'm guessing as much as $20M -- so my gut feeling is it's not gonna happen.
People get very wrapped up in 4K, but I'm not convinced it's the be-all / end-all. I think 4K can look great, and I'm all for people shooting in this format, but the post process for 4K is so torturous and expensive, I'm not sure if the world is ready for it yet. I think it can work, but when you're looking at a project with upwards of 1200 visual effects, and each one takes 2 or 3 days to bounce around to different facilities (in 2K)... multiply that times 4 and tell me what it does to the schedule.
Having said that: there are more and more TV shows shooting in 4K. Sony showed some 4K demos of The Blacklistback in April at NAB, and I thought it looked fantastic. But that's not a show with 200 effects per episode."

I guess he was forgetting that all the FX work on the originals was done using film and only the special editions effects were done @ 2k or below. The originals could easily be scanned @4k

The Hut scene will be the rearranged version in ANH:R HD, with a few new minor tweaks. Seemless branching compatibility is sporadic at best on consumer player with non-commercial discs/ authoring software. Even less with Blu-Ray. And for an mkv release, seemless branching is not even an option. And there is no way i am going to be doing multiple versions this time around.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I think we have got our hopes up too high with this 4k business. The most realistic chances are that these are for the digital release. We know Star wars is supposed to be going to Netflix and, with their 4k streaming now available, it's probably be just going to be the 20011 version just for that now, after the 3D versions were dropped. They'll probably just upscale the changes and slap them into whatever version had the 4k scan.

I don't know if this has been addressed before but I just noticed that when 3P0's head hits this light, it moves to the side, which gives it a cheap movie-set look. If it's deemed worthy of fixing, it should be a fairly easy fix:

This was fixed a very long time ago ;)
