So is another two weeks about when it will happen, or should we say another month?

I notice that you have now edited this post since you first replied. I have to say your attitude pissed me off a bit. I am working as fast as i can, while not too fast that i make mistakes. i have had no sleep for 3 days just to get the last few things finished and i was really not in the mood for your impatience and quite bad attitude towards me. Why be so sarcastic about how long it's now going to take to complete? as i replied originally, i did say that hopefully it would be 2 weeks, but gave no guarantee. also if you looked at the date that i actually posted that it was 3rd January, and by my calculations the 2 weeks isn't up until the 17th, so i still have 1 day to go. I'm just one guy working on this edit so please just cut me some slack. it will be ready when i have checked and double checked everything and feel happy enough with it to release it.

Anyway. the video & audio side of things is now complete. I'm about 60% complete with the menus, all chapter markers are in place, both subtitle tracks are complete. I'm about to render the DVD-5 & DVD-9 PAL & NTSC MPEG's, which will take a couple of days to complete. Once the DVD-9 Pal is rendered i will be doing the XVID conversion. This is all going to take about 5 days to finish. The second the XVID is complete and checked then it will be uploaded to usenet, along with the PAL DVD-5 ( the DVD-5 NTSC will take longer because i have to rebuild the DVD using NTSC material and resynch the subtitles. I will announce the EXACT release dates as soon as i can.

Well, I'm off to get some sleep now. I will get right back to work as soon as i wake up ( probably just in time for the 35th anniversary if just how tired i feel right now is anything to go by. )

Now that the video work is almost done, and all that is left to do at the moment is tweak the 5.1 mix a little in places, then i am about to start the painting that will be used for the official dvd cover.hopefully this will only take a couple of weeks

Notice i said the word "hopefully". i didn't give 2 weeks as a definite release date, and at the moment i am still unable to give an exact date because there is still work going on with the DVD structure and i still have 1 more shot left to finish on the video side of things and i haven't even had a chance to start the painting for the cover yet. Things are just taking a little longer than i had anticipated, so please be patient.

I have wanted to use the 10th Anniversary poster for a cover, but I can't seem to get it to look balanced no matter how I crop it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Sluggo, have you tried changing the colour of the background to black, or maybe a starfiled? I think it may be the white surround that is throwing things out. Just an idea.

Hey Ady... just curious on the specs for the xvid. What will the fps, resolution, and encode rate be?

Not sure on the specs apart from it will be 25fps because it will be taken from the PAL DVD which will be finished first

OK, i turned the room light monitor on my display and i can now see the grey starfield that has been mentioned. It's easily fixed though. just adjust the black levels slightly. I was wondering how the starfield black levels have changed but the matte bars have remained black. Were the matte bars added during encoding because you did mention that you were working with the HD footage which had the black bars cropped.

it's the same alarm sound heard on the Death Star in ANH when the officer informs Vader that there are 30 rebel ships

I think I need to re-adjust my monitor, someone mentioned something wrong with the black levels in another clip i posted.

the blacks of the starfield look fine to me and my monitor is calibrated but some of the other shots look a little too light in the black areas. i hope my monitor is ok or my edit is screwed.

Well I'm planning on having hell of a lot of alcohol while i sit down and watch the finished edit, apart from that I'm not doing much.

Are you still planning to release divx/xvid then DVD5 then DVD9?

The XVID & the PAL DVD-5 will be released at the same time. the others will be some time after.

Well the main subtitle track is complete and i have added a second subtitle track that lists hell of a lot of the fixes. I've left some out because it would just get too tedious listing each shot in the Death Star battle. This track will be on all DVD versions

The barebones DVd will likely just have static menus. i'll leave the better ones for the DVD-9 due to bitrate.

I have decided that i won't be doing a special features disc, well not until the complete trilogy is finished. Just too much work to do straight after this edit. i need a break. Almost there....

Well i have just begun to create the DVD scructure. I have the chapter markers set and the subtitle track finished. Work has started on the menus now. I still have the 2 shots left to complete but i am still able to work on the DVD with a quick render i did yesterday so i can just replace that with the finished one when needed. I hit a snag with the encoding though. i re3ndered the complete movie using CCE and it looked great apart from the briefing room scene. It just didn't like the red graphics and seem to separate the colours slightly which caused a flickering effect when viewed on the TV. I've now changed to Procoder 3 for the rendering and this problem has gone away and the results are as good, if not better, than CCE but with a fraction of the rendering time. Even the DVD-5 test looks great on the TV. I've also redone the audio mix slightly too. I really didn't like the way that John Williams music had been pushed into the background for the sake of soundFX and i hadn't restored the music enough to my liking in my original mix in a couple of places so that needed to be redone. Hopefully it won't be too long to wait now. Just have to finish Ponda baba's hand replacement still, which is taking longer than i had hoped and i have almost all the frames needed for the TIE approach. Nearly there

Episode 3 - Editing Back in Progress (* unfinished project *)

Why not use the HDTV versions that were posted to usenet? I used them for a couple of zoom shots i needed for my edit and the results were perfect. uprezzing the shots from DVD source will never give you the results you are looking for. There are actually 2 different 1080p releases available on usenet in x264 format in a.b.hdtv.x264 posted between 11th & 14th december (the esir version looks the better one). Then all you have to do is create a composition in Adobe after effects for each shot needed. the compositions res should be: 1024 x 576 for PAL format and 853 x 480 for NTSC format. once you have finished the shot you can export it to lossless avi then resize it to 720 x 576 or 720 x 480 using virtualdub and the results should be just what you need. If you need any help just give me a shout

So i want to pay for the finished product - a gesture to appreciate all the hard work that you've done and most important of all...a thank you!

I won't be accepting any payment whatsoever in return for a copy of this edit. i did this purely for fun ( although it did turn into a monster) so i am not looking for any sort of reward for the work i have done. All i hope is that when its finally out there people will enjoy it.

I was wondering if you had put any thought to doing a list of each change that you made to the film. This would be neat to have as an optional subtitle track that pops up at each alteration, or as just a txt file in the DVD-ROM folder. Or, were you more interested in letting people just notice things on their own? Just curious.

Well on page 1 there is a list of almost all the changes made but i have forgot a few so i'll leave it for someone else to spot.

We have enough hands being cut off to say the least.
I don't want to cut things just because i haven't been able to finish them yet. I'm not going to rush anything just so i can get it out as soon as possible.

I know on page 1 you say that this will be in PAL and perhaps an NTSC release, and all those clips we've seen have been in pal, but is there any chance you might release this in NTSC as well? I haven't had the chance to read through all 140 pages lol...so I thought I'd ask.I apologize if this keeps getting asked.

I wouldn't care if it weren't for the fact that the music gets pitched up about a half step (although it's not quite... it's sometimes sounding a bit more... like a quarter tone as well...

Otherwise I couldn't care less...

And I know there was some talk about an ioslated score. You wouldn't feel that an ioslated score might be a misnomer in a sense... being the music alone but at the same time off pitch.

But past that it looks wonderful and however you do release it, I'll be sure to get a copy heh...

I just thought I'd ask if you'd thought much about it. I know you were talking just now about rendering frame by frame, and I'm not sure how you'd push it to NTSC unless you duplicate frames which is how I assume its done. Wouldn't know honestly....

Well i will be releasing it as a true NTSC version too. Its pretty easy to convert it to NTSC from PAL. All i have to do is change the framerate to 23.976which won't mean adding any frames(plus resize from 720 x 576 down to 720 x 480) and then the soundtrack slowed down in both time & pitch for NTSC. The same will be done for the isolated score track too

Well i'm down to the final 2 shots now. But these 2 are going to take the longest. The first is the severed arm in the cantina and the second is the TIE approach at the battle of Yavin. The first is taking longer than i hoped because of having to build the proper hoofed hand from scratch and then match all the lighting to fit the original is a bit of a nightmare. The last one is in the process of rendering. To give you an idea of just how much work and time this shot requires then Will, the 3D guy, is rendering the TIES which will be composited on top of the background i have created. He is using the maxwell renderer and it looks great. But here's why this shot is taking so long.... It takes about 1 month to render the TIEs. One frame alone took 16 hours to render and its about 2/3 done so far, but it will be worth it once you see it on the screen. I can't thank Will enough for the time and effort he has put into this shot, and the death star meshes too.

Now that the video work is almost done, and all that is left to do at the moment is tweak the 5. mix a little in places, then i am about to start the painting that will be used for the official dvd cover.hopefully this will only take a couple of weeks

This will not appear in the final render. All the clips have been very quick renders and the problem you mention was only a result of that.

Yes I know but i did say that there were a few shots that were unfinished when i posted the clip.

Well for that scene the mix was rebuilt from the ground up. Only the original center channel remains from the 2004 5.1 mix. I used the soundtrack Cd for the music. I was also able to enhance the soundtrack CD by using the 24-bit crystalizer that is part of the mixer of my X-FI fatality soundcard. I had to record the whole soundtrack by using "what you hear" because unfortunately it can only be used for listening to the audio and not able to use it as a filter on existing tracks but it has given it a slight sparkle to the mix. Most people probably won't even be able to hear the difference. To give the music a little more clarity i also overlayed the score to the original DVD mix L&R channels at a low volume with high frequencies enhanced by the equalizer.

Is this on my clip? can you explain a little more?

Well its all going great at the moment. Only a few shots left now. I've just finished all the hologram shots for the rebel control room table during the battle that had plagued me for months. They all just suddenly fell into place after having the X-mas break so i'm well chuffed. If all goes according to plan you should see the XVID & DVD-5 barebones appear within the next couple of weeks with the DVD-9 & the NTSC versions appearing a few weeks after (if not sooner)

Happy New year

What should I do to get the entire 2:35 shown on my TV? Burn another DVD, but what format/setting? I used WINDOWS DVD MAKER.

Forget using Windows DVD Maker it's a pile of s**t. If you are trying to burn the last 2 clips i posted to dvd then you don't need to reencode them because they are DVD compliant mpegs (unless you are converting them to NTSC of course). Try using a different program.

well the clips have AC3 audio so you might need the codec. try googling "ac3 codec". i'm pretty sure there are free ones available.

Or you could try using Vlcmedia player here:

A small Christmas prezzie for you all. Here's 2 new clips iclusing a sneak peak at the new footage from the Death Star battle. The clips are both MPeg2 with AC3 5.1 surround from the final mix. Clip 1 is pretty low bitrate due to size constraints but the Death Star battle clip has got a slightly higher bitrate but not as high as the final render will be. Plus in the battle sequence there are a few unfinished shots.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE !!!!

CLIP 1 - MEETING OBI-WAN -- MEGAUPLOAD

CLIP 2 - DEATH STAR TIE BATTLE -- RAPIDSHARE
