I did too, but I'm pretty sure it was meant as a joke. Leaving it in would really disrupt the flow of that scene. But I believe Ady said it would be included in the bonus material on the DL disc.

Ron Moses

The extra Alderaan footage had to go because of what Obi-Wan said: "..million voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced". With the new footage it prolonged the destruction too much so had to go. There will be an new extended version on the DL DVd though

Still struggling with getting a decent pic of the hand for the cantina shot though and the menus are taking longer than i though but it won't be too far away

Ok , I thought i should bring this over from the Starkiller Ranch thread

I like most of what Ady did, but my friends and I were horrified at the music added to the saber fight in ANH. It doesn't belong there and is a far worse change than anything Lucas ever did. I'll take a 100 Greedos firing first over THAT.

Hamfistedly laying music behind it doesn't appreciably change it or make it better, so why not just leave it be?

Most of what Ady has done to his cut DOES help it, but I think in a few spots he suffers from "kid with a new toy" syndrome and is finding every last change he can make just for the sake of it.

How many times do you have to say that i have done things just for the sake of it when you don't agree with what i have done? You are starting to sound like a stuck record. You said exactly the same things earlier in this thread numerous times and each time i explained in detail my thinking behind each decision and that it was not an "it's there because i can do it" choice. Personally i don't care what either you or your Hollywood buddies think about this edit. Oh and for your information only 1 scream was added in the Tantive battle. The others existed there in the first place. i have made the movie I wanted to make and all the changes were carefully thought out. the saber battle was tried with both music present and without. I also played the 2 versions of the scene to various friends, some don't even like Star Wars, and the majority preferred the scene with the music, so my first choice ultimately became my final one. My personal taste was that it added more to it with the music present with the new editing. I was not suffering from being a "kid with a new toy" as you have said. And how the hell can you say that adding the music is worse than anything Lucas did? Greedo shooting first changed Hans character. He was a cold blooded mercenary when he shot Greedo first. As it stands since the SE's he was only defending himself. How the hell you can say that adding music to a scene is worse than that then i'm sorry but I disagree 100%. The music does nothing to change any characters or storyline.

No amount of slamming the decisions that you don't like will make me change them

I really think that i'm going to keep my ESB Revisited as a private project because you are really gonna hate some of the changes in that. When you see all the Gungans hiding out in Dagobah, the scene with Darth vaders personal masseur, Luke's new line on Dagobah - " get these mutha fuckin snakes of my mutha fuckin X-Wing", Tha Wampa musical number and Lando's new afro you are gonna flip.

Now i think we need more Kitty time.

All i have to do is resize it to 720x576 and change the framerate to 23.976. Then i just convert the audio from 25fps pitch to 23.976fps pitch using Vegas and that's it.

I think you mean 720x480.

Several people have brought it up but he hasn't said if he's doing a commentary. He really should, if not only to point out all the changes on a scene by scene basis.

A text/subtitle commentary would also work for this.

An audio commentary won't be happening i'm afraid. I just hate the sound of my own voice and never know what to say on these things anyway. There is a subtitle track on the DVD's that point out almost all of the changes

Anti-Matter. what problem are you having with playing the video? If you downloaded this via torrent is it possible that your client reported it as complete but it actually wasn't ( i've had problems like that in the past). try forcing a re-check on the file just in case. If not then try using VLC media player. I have heard that the latest version of the xvid codec has been giving people problems playing movies rendered with older versions in certain players.

You can check to see if the file is ok with this method:

download quickpar from here:
QUICKPAR
Install it and then download this par file to the folder that contains the movie
par2 file for checking
open up the par2 file with quickpar and it will scan the video to see if it is corrupt in any way, or has been changed from the original

I can't give a time frame on how long the revised version is going to take to complete. i'm having problems with the "hand" scene. i just can't get the lighting correct on the hand mainly because the wife is one of the worse photographers in history. (she's gonna kill me for saying that)

Who said i finished it yesterday? there's still a lot of work to do. but i won't be releasing another XVID. The revised edition will be for the DVD's only.

Oh no. Did i just sound like a certain GL when i said that the only the revised special edition will be available in high quality on DVD.

yeh, this was something that happened to me when i watched it back on the pc. i bunrned the xvid, untouched, to a dvd-r so i could watch the xvid on my ps3 and it was perfectly in sync. i then watched the quick dvd render i did of the almost completed DVD and it was fine too. I really can't explain what happened there. But the strange this is that when i skipped the xvid back to the beginning of the scene on my pc it was in sync again.

That's too bad, it would have been nice to see a big credit right at the end: "Dedicated to Neil S. Bulk, who fully supports this project and specifically asked for his name to be put in the credits."

Also, is it just people on this forum you want them going to or as many people I know who are interested?

Sorry if youve answered this b4 somewhere on the last 180 pages!

i'm not sure myself how the PIF scheme works. if someone could PM the exact details of that's involve i would be grateful. Thanks in advance

With an attitude like that i will remove it with pleasure. You had plenty of time to tell me that you didn't want your name in the credits when i said that i would be including EVERYBODY that contributed to this forum in the credits months ago, which you did contribute. Actually i don't see why i should have to go back and redo the credits yet again after i did give everyone plenty of warning.

Ok, i've tweaked a few things in the past couple of days but i will be doing no more work on this edit. The majority of fans like what i have done and that is all that matters to me. I want to put this edit to rest so i can have a break and then concentrate on ESB. I don't care if some of the FX aren't great or that elements don't match. the vision i had for the edit is now on screen and i had to do this using whatever footage i possibly could. I'd never done FX before and i am proud of what i have accomplished so this will be my last word on any changes happening for the DVD versions of ANH. Here's the changes:

Removed the ILM crew member from the droid sale
Removed the wire and batteries seen up Luke's sleeve in Ben's hut
Removed the remaining wires from Ben's sleeve during the sabre fight
Ponad Baba's arm will be swapped for Dr. Evazan' s arm & hand
Slight tweak to the TIE approach. The background & camera is no longer static at the beginning & a new Death Star surface
Fixed the gunport shot during the TIE battle where the gun remains static when Han swings the chair and the gun can clearly be seen over the top of the chair instead of behind it
Credits fixed

As for the sabers being too fat then just have a look at the state of the originals. the width is all over the place throughout. When rotoscoping i had to make them slightly fatter in a lot of shots because the blade is all over the place and has really jagged edges and as was mentioned by Fuser the blades are never the same thickness during ESB & ROTJ an actually get fatter than the ones i did at times too.

Oh and if i sounded a bit cranky yesterday then i appologise. I'm in total agony at the moment. Not only are my health problems worse due to the cold weather but half my back tooth cracked off and there is no NHS dentist that will fix it , i just can't afford to go private, so i have to wait for the hospital to send me an appointment to fix it which could take up to 4 months for me to get in. Isn't the UK a great country. you can pay you national insurance contributions for all your working life and when you need the help you can't get it , especially if you live up north. If i was a criminal, drug addict, binge drinker or an immigrant i would receive immediate treatment from the NHS. But i'm a law abiding citizen who worked all his life until my health problems and contributed to this country, so i can go to hell as far as this government is concerned.

No, it doesn't work like that. It used the maximum amount of bitrate for it to fit on a DVD-R. All you ahve to do is load your xvid into it and then click convert. it does everything else for you and the picture quality is great. Of course i wouldn't use this for my edit but converting xvids is perfect

I have a question, and remember I know I am an idiot when it come to this stuff, I have some blank DVD-R's setting around and I wanna burn this AVI on to one of them, the movie is a bit longer than the 120 maximum quality allows, but if I wanted to burn the first two hours I could and have the whole movie, but just not all the credits. How can I do that? ( The ending medals ceremony ends at just barely under 2 hours.) I also of course have to convert the AVI.

Well i always use ConvertxtoDVd. Although its not free it gives great results and will encode the whole movie to fit on a DVD-R

Sorry about the rant guys. Just not getting much sleep nowadays (nothing to do with the edit anymore) so i can get a bit cranky.

Sevb32 wasn't making any criticisms or flaming just making points which is what i enjoy replying to.

As for starting a thread about ESB then that is going to be at least 6 months off yet. i don't want to even think about another edit until my head is cleared after doing this one. i need to sit back and start doing my research and start making notes first before i decide which direction to go for ESB.

Ady, are the Death Star interiors somehow more desaturated on the Xvid than they will be on the DVD? I just started noticing this last night on my third viewing (someone else mentioned it pages ago, but I can't find the post). Most of the interior shots appear to be desaturated all the way to grayscale. So it's like a black and white movie in the background with maybe a few faces and panel lights in color. Vader almost always appears in total monochrome, with the exception of his lights.

Now... this could easily be my video card, I could be seeing it wrong. And I didn't notice this at all my first couple of viewings. But once I started seeing it, I had a hard time *not* seeing it in a high percentage of interior shots, and even during the DS battle (which is so awesome I rewound it three times... again!). Are my eyes playing tricks on me?

At least I didn't mention either flippers or TIEs!

Ron Moses

The interiors aren't all the way down to monocrome, there is still a hint of blue, but i always wanted the interiors to be grey .When doing the colour correction i tried bringing the blue down so it would match shot to shot but it created more problems. Some areas were so oversaturated that when i got parts to look the way i wanted there would be blue patches here and there and it also created video noise. Also some shots were almost monocrome when removing the blue tint so i had to set a medium and the only way to get it looking to what i wanted it to was to remove the blue from the walls so no patches existed. So inevitably some of the subtle blue tints were lost ( not that they were even there in the first place in some scenes due to the horrible colouring of the 2004 DVD). I mentioned about this before when i explained about the monocrome cockpits in shots during the Death Star trench run. I like the more monocrome look and thats all that matters to me

Now in a very sick way, Adywan knows how George feels. There's just no way to please everyone.

You got it exactly right there. there seems to be a lot of nit picking going on which totally took the buzz i had for having finished it. the whole flipper debate just became stupid. One thing that really bugged me is that a lot of people slam lucas for using CG for things that could be created using real world items but suddenly there is enthusiasm to use a CG created flipper instead of a real item. i know totally how he feels now. damned if you do, damned if you don't. i need to finish off these dvd's, get them out and forget about star wars for a while (apart from something i'm working on For jambe) otherwise the way i'm feeing at the moment ESB is a dead project. i'm just happy that the majority like what i've done. i knew i'd never be able to please everyone, but come on.. It a bloody edit that was created at home and not a studio job. I'm not a miracle worker and there were bound to be shots that don't look like a true hollywood movie. I only started trying to do Fx work about 14 months ago and i had never even touched After effects until after that. I'm 99% happy with it so i'm not really that bothered is others want to pull it apart. . The constructive criticism i like and its that which has helped me throughout the edit, it s just the plain bashing saying shots look like shit or that have got me to the point i'm at now.
