^That's one sync issue that has always bothered me, since I first noticed it as a wee lad. Is it fixable?

Not without new ADR i don't think. The original line was "rogue leader, incoming" (as can be seen on the dutch ESB doc on youtube at about 4 min)

Dark_Jedi, just a quick question. I have just seen your pan and scan laserdisc versions appear over at a.b.starwars. Does the ESB one contain the 1980 stereo mix as i'd love to hear this?

I've just finished watching the first 45 minutes of ESB, and I only noticed one potential sync issue that I think is just bad ADR (that is, part of the mix and beyond your control).  From my notes:

- First sighting of the AT-ATs - "Echo station, 3TA(?) - We have spotted Imperial walkers!" seems to be out of sync.

This is a problem with the ADR as it isn't in sync in the 2004 version either

Yep.  His website/forum is a joke.  Here's the thread:

http://digital-fanedits.com/index.php/Forum/Digital-Fanedits-Topics/135-quotStar-Wars-Revisitedquot-removed-for-violating-financial-conduct/

He also accused JasonN of stealing ideas from his edit:

If you are following the Prologue fanedit (either the Part 2a screener or the change tracker thread), watch from time 0.21:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqS7jVyAtMw

Seem familiar?

When I saw that even the same transition shot is used (i.e., the turnaround), I become intrigued by this guy and his Star Wars edit. I traced the project here:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/STAR-WARS-ATTACK-OF-THE-FEDERATION-TWILIGHT-OF-THE-REPUBLIC-THE-BLACK-KNIGHT-RISES/topic/10114/

Looks promising: lots of good (or at least popular/supported) ideas, some effects work, etc. The author goes out of his way to credit and praise certain sources for his inspiration and direction, but there is no mention or hint of the Prologue project, so I start considering how rare it must be for two strangers to come up with the same idea to re-use a deleted scene in the same new way for the same new plot device.

But then I checked our Community menu and I wasn't so amazed. Someone named JasonN registered a Digital Fanedits account one day in January and has never logged in since. Presumably he got everything he needed.

Whoever you are, I have to agree with one of your OT buddies, bkev, who likes your idea of meeting Anakin at the fight. And all along I thought it was my idea.

Damn! Just when I thought I was contributing something original...  Grin LOL

Jeez, this guy really thinks that he is so special that someone would bother to register at his stupid self promotion website just to steal an idea? JasonN said himself that he got the original idea from a commentary track (phantom editors, i think). People come up with the same ideas all the time.  God, this guy needs taking down a peg or two.;)

One thing that is possibly impossible to fix (at least I can't think of a way other than building a new carbonite block and filming it) is Han's shirt change from going into the chamber and coming out frozen (it's an error that wasn't fixed in ROTJ either).

I'm actually working on a way of fixing that :)

Is anti-matter's situation lol-worthy?

Oh yeah.  That guy is so full of himself, even to this day.  Have you ever been to his forum?  He removed ANH:R from his fanedit database because adywan SOLICITED DONATIONS IN AN EVIL SCHEME TO DEFRAUD THE MOVIE STUDIOS (my phrasing, not his).

He said what????? This guy was an ass from day 1. He started making out i was receiving donations in exchange for copies of the DVD's just because his posts asking about distribution of ANH:R were over looked. A bit of proof that he was just an attention seeker who doesn't like it when something he does or says isn't of interest to the vast majority. But then he posts crap like this:

Anti-Matter said:

If I donate money to Adywan, it's not because I want to improve his computer equipment. It is because I want a copy of the DVD. End of story.

This guy also emailed me about "buying" a copy for a donation before posting this and i told him that the donations are only used for equipment so i could complete the project and would never be to secure a copy as this would be made available for free only. Then he got all high and mighty about all this. I saw the crap posted over at digital fanedits about removing my edit from their database. And anti-crapper posted this there:

I participated in that thread when it turned into a donate-athon. The entire episode was repugnant, but as is common there, excuses and denial prevailed. I agree there was probably an element of politics involved.

There's not much grey area when it comes to money and fanedits. This applies to everyone.

If it was so repugnant to him what whats going on over here why did he continue to promote his edit in here for another 2 months?

He only started to get pissy when all the attention wasn't getting piled upon his edit. The guy is a joke and so is that digital fanedit site which seems to have been started up to promote Anti-matters work and not much else really. He's "prologue" blog is even a pop-down link in the main menu but nobody else's is.

At least you got to see that goal. We were watching it on ITV1HD and they suddenly cut to an ad-break segment and then a blank screen before the picture returned and the score read 1-0. Needless to say that the level of abuse thrown at the TV and ITV in our household at that point drowned out those bloody horns at the match. England played like a bunch of amateurs last night. I couldn't believe i was watching a professional game. Yeh, they picked it up a bit towards the end of the game but i've seen better playing at a sunday league pub match. And don't get me started on that bloody goalie of ours.....

But saying that it also showed how bad the USA team were because, with us playing as bad as we were, they should have kicked our ass.

i've sort of fixed it. If you look at the scene a bit earlier in this sequence when Luke loses his balance and Yoda falls, well when you see Yoda get up that is actually the shot of him climbing up onto the mound to raise the x-wing, only they flipped it and moved it earlier. i've moved that back into its rightful place and just need to figure out what to use for the other shot now

Even though I respect your answer, I don't think it would be that hard when using the Puppet tool for some minor articulation.

Please don't see this as a way of whining to still do it, just pointing it out.

I can play nice :-D

But the puppet tool can't turn something into a 3D object. you couldn't use a 2D image and use it to articulate his hand because it would look fake. you need a 3D object for something like this

J. Williams &amp; LSO, The EMPIRE STRIKES BACK <em>AUDIOPHILE EDITION</em> - Restored &amp; Remastered Score (Released)
Time

Well i finally had chance to sit down and listen to CD's 1 & 2 today (sorry it's taken me so long ABC but it's a bit of a madhouse here at the moment).

What an amazing piece of work you have done here ABC. I've never heard this soundtrack sound so good. The whole sound feels so rich and alive. instruments that had been almost buried for years with the latest CD releases are back where they should be.

Now i will admit that i just had to listen to it again but this time i enabled the crystalizer function on my soundblaster X-Fi Fatality soundcard and my god it was like listening to it again for the first time. if anyone has this feature on their pc then just try it with this enabled and you can see just how clear ABC has made this soundtrack. Many times this function, while making everything sound amazing, also has the downside of showing up mastering problems and other problems within the recording. But no. Not with this one. yes you could hear the odd crackle now and then but only as a distant sound and i almost didn't notice this

there was a slight flaw (noticed without the crystalizer enabled) on "main title"  at about 2:42 that i mentioned to ABC about where the stereo field seems to shift but loses some of the left channel for a second or so then it kicks back in. I don't know if this is on the original source or not because i haven't heard that in a long time. But really this is nothing.

Thank you ABC for all your hard work in giving us this amazing piece of work.

p.s. is CD 3 finished because i would love to be able to listen to this

p.p.s i did try replying to you a while back but it wouldn't let me because it said i wasn't on your friends list. i hope you don't think i was ignoring your messages

thanks :)

just click on the audio track you want to make a cut to highlight the wavform then get the cursor to the start position of your cut and press "s". you should now have a splice cut. Now move it to your end position for your cut and do the same thing. Then just click on the cut piece, keeping the left mouse button down, and drag it into your new track. you could do with "enable snapping" enabled for this part as you don't want this section to be out of sync. it will lock to the beginning of the splice on your first track a lot easier when dragging it down.

Trust me, once you get the hang of editing in vegas you'll never want to touch something as basic as womble again. lol

OK I think I am getting it now, but side 5 is really being a pain the arse! I slide the start of the track until it is lined up, then go to the end and set timing and the middle is off, but both ends are OK, also I have gaps in between the LD sides, so maybe just take what is missing from the '93 track? it certainly is very minute at most.

looks like you'll need to do a cut or two first. Return side 5 back to its normal timing and go through the track to see where it starts going out noticeably and make a cut, then sync the beginning of the new section and do the same again. if you've got gaps between sides then just patch them with the '93, making sure to blend the two sources in as there may be volume differences

I don't want anyone pestering these people for any information about the workprint because they won't tell you anything as i trust them 100% i won't be sending out a finished beta version though to anyone. Adywan,

When this is all done, have you considered posting it as version 0.99 beta to allow for one last round of nitpicking before the final version is released?

Unfortunately, no. There are things in this edit i want to keep a surprise and releasing a beta version is not something i want to do.

vaderios said:

The clip that ady posted is more than meets the eye :D

I never thought it would be so different from the original/previous one :D

The shape looks more like mc's paintings :)

-Angel

yeh, i was looking at the McQuarrie paintings of the shaft and like the more squat look.

ImperialFighter said:

Just a little thought on this adywan - while I can imagine an equally large 'bubble' unseen on the other side of the 'Vane'/'Pod' to make up up the whole 'Carbon Chamber', I wonder if there should be a hint of 'steam'/'smoke' coming up from the other side subtly too, to sell that idea?  Or are vertical 'stacks' on just one side enough?

i did have it with smoke on the other side but it looked a little much so i decided that the vents would be on one side only.

vaderios said:

Here's a thing. Speaking for THX.. i mean lobot i noticed that he was meditating to a room similar to leia's apartment.

The center circle in the room is actually a light!

Since tho there is a different continuity in revisited edits will you ady consider make it open too? meaning with clouds from behind?

-Angel

its just a very cleaver use of an existing set for a quick shots that lasts just over a second. It doesn't have to be the same rooftop apartment, so i won't be doing anything to this.

vaderios said:

Ady since you ve made the shaft in 3d will you consider making some subtle 3d projection to the bespin building when our heroes are landing? meaning enhancing the simple zoom with a more dynamic one?

Adding more 3D projection like the shaft shot may be a little too much, plus i finished that shot ages ago and i don't want to go back and redo shots i've finished unless i really need to. I'm keeping that shot as a simple slight camera movement with very subtle 3d space.

Lord Grievous said:

Also, as for the the whole-open/closed-circle-in-the-roof debate, wouldn't it be possible to remove the shadow where the circle is?

I agree that we should leave the circle open as it is, but couldn't the shadow of the circle be removed?

It may look ok in a still picture but pulling it off in a motion shot is another thing entirely. I'm not bothered about the shadow issue, as you really shouldn't be looking at the shadows in that scene anyway.

Nicholas J. Michalak said:

Well, that doesn't really jibe because when Luke is making his approach to Cloud City, it's broad daylight out, and within a minute or so of this bit with Lobot, we see Luke walking down the hallway with perfectly blue skies outside behind him.  I gather that the Falcon lands at the break of dawn, and by the time they escape, it's sundown.  We never see any night skies on Bespin.

In ESB:R luke arrives at bespin as the sun is beginning to set. you see a part of this in the trailer.

vaderios said:

Ady will you incorporate something like this to some of luke's poor fly bys?

What poor fly bys? all of the xwing approach shots are overhead cutaways and i don't think they are poor at all. I've already added a pan shot to the falcons approach to bespin and adding more would probably be a little too much and just a bit show off, although i was thinking of adding one shot.

doubleofive said:

On a similar note, you did fix Dagobah's transparency towards its southern pole as Luke leaves, right?

yep. :)

vaderios said:

Since you mention that 005 does anyone else thinks that when we cut from yoda to xwing planet flyby the cut is a bit hard?

A lot of it is to do with the fact that its the reel change and they never smoothed the transition.

Loconut said:

Hey Ady,

I was wondering: When Luke is training with Yoda on his back, when the shot with the line "You will know, when you're calm, at peace...passive." is up, could you give Yoda's left hand some 'articulation'?

(Frank Oz puppeteered his right hand and mouth, so the left was just sort of stuck there). It doesn't need to be big, just some grabbing-like motion so it doesn't seem so dead-ish. I know this can easily be achieved in After effects.

I see this a lot when people say "it's easily achieved in after effects". But it isn't. articulating a hand that is motionless couldn't be achieved convincingly in after effects. The only real ways of doing something like this would be either create a CG hand and add it into the composition of create a new model hand, film it against a blue screen and then add into the composition. It's not something that's bothered me so i can't see me doing anything like this.

vaderios said:

Ady, since you said you will expand/extend the rebel echo hangar. can you share your plans of how bigger or altered will be?

Is that blueprint from the technical journal? It's pretty inaccurate as the snowspeeders aren't situated in the alcoves, which aren't that small and are actually almost as wide as the ones with the xwings & more of the scaling is all wrong with the falcon. But the studio set had 4 main alcoves but i have extended this to 6.

when you get any overlap just drag the end or beginning of one of the audio tracks to remove most of the overlap but making sure that you're not cutting off any of the audio from both sources. The overlapping is to ensure smooth transition. Just play about with everything as i find this is the best way to learn Vegas.

To export the file just goto "render" and select AC3 as your output. Vegas has a AC3  preset for both 5.1 and stereo

no, i think i can see where you are going wrong. When importing side 2 you need to drag it so that the beginning of this side is in sync with the gout audio before you correct the timing. Don't just drag it until it touches the end of side 1 as this won't work. are you using a 5.1 track or a stereo one for your new audio?

If you are having problems syncing audio then use vegas. Import the orignal audio track that is synced to the video track first. Then add side 1 to a new track. zoom in pretty close and line up the new audio track by dragging it  so it is exactly in line with the original one. A good tip is to  disable "quantize to frames"  & "enable snapping" first. If you are working with a multi track file then import all 6 separate tracks first and line them up (with "enable snapping" enabled until you have done this) then select them all and create a new group. Make sure that your centre channel is your first track under your original so this will be easier to line up with the original. this will move all the new track simultaneously when dragging. Now one thing that throws the sync out is the reel changes on the video. They may not be the same. you may be either missing or have an extra few frames unless the original source transfers are from the same master.

Now go to the end of your first LD side and check to see if the wav forms still match that of your original. If they do not then you will have to re-time them. right click on your new audio file and select "properties". In the section marked "time stretch/pitch shift" select the method as classic. Where it says "lock to stretch" make sure this is ticked. Now in the "new length" section just alter the time. you need only do small steps but this is all trial and error. after you have made an adjustment just click on ok and you can see the changes have been made. If they still don't line up just go back into your properties and alter the time until you get it lined up. (if you are using multiple audio tracks just start with the centre channel and once that is synced use the time value in the pitch shift and apply this to each individual track).

Unfortunately i found out with the 5.1 laserdisc audio that you have to alter the timecode and make many cuts to get the audio to sync correctly. it seems to be all over the place from side 2

once you have side 1 synced then do the same for side 2 and so on.

hope this helps
