Wow, that is really creepy.

However some of his other Marvel comics character figures are pretty cool looking;

They’re a bit too modern-looking I feel, but some of these are pretty neat;

Alright, I get it, Hasbro likes to make figures of silly background characters, and the Ground Control guy is far from the worst.
I’m not protesting it’s existence, I just think it’s a bit silly, and find it amusing that there’s a Stormtrooper action figure with marshalling wands as accessories.

(Also, the weird backpack thing kind of proves that Hasbro had to give him something other than the wands to make him a proper “action” figure.)

There’s this movie called Star Wars, ever heard of it? Well in it, there were these Imperial Gunners that looked like this:

And yes, they have an action figure:

There’s a huge difference between an Imperial “gunner” and an Imperial “ground control”.

The gunner did at least have action related play-value, the new RO figure, although very similar-looking, is equipped with light-sticks for guiding landing air-craft.

I’m not saying it’s terrible, but I think it’s a tad silly.
(At least it makes more sense than blue-Lucas.)

At least he didn’t make himself a Jedi or something.

True.
That would have been very silly.

I just can’t image that if I was in Lucas’ shoes that my first though when entertaining the idea of a cameo would be “I’d like to play some blue politician in a funny hat”.
The X-Wing pilot makes more sense to me. Or you know, something short, but funny, like Peter Jackson’s various LOTR cameos.
In the end though I’m just amused by the fact that they also gave the character an action figure. After all I think the “Imperial Ground Crew” figure is kinda amusing, George Lucas as “Papanoida” the blue politician seen for two seconds in the background of ROTS, is just silly.

At least it came packaged with Lucas’ entire family;

And what kid wouldn’t want an action figure of the guy who waves two lights at landing TIE-fighters?

I dunno, did this guy ever get an action figure?

Actually… Yes he did…

Though, sadly, he didn’t come with the wands.

Dang it.

Now the kids can’t have a complete set of Imperial and Rebel ground crew.

Well, at least we have three George Lucas action figures to choose from.
(I especially like the blue one, I mean seriously, what the hell is that supposed to be even?)

He’s this guy

Right.
I still find it weird that that was his only SW-related cameo role though, but why not.

The Lucas as X-Wing pilot figure is also an official character apparently; http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Jorg_Sacul

Let’s stop kidding ourselves. They made it simply because they wanted to make some new crap for the marketing purpose (despite being logically redundant).

Well, you could make that same argument for a lot of the OT Stormtrooper variants.

I mean if a regular Stormtrooper with a few add-ons could function in the desert, then why did we get a completely new type of trooper for forests?
It’s a lot easier to sell one of these rather than just changing the regular Stormtrooper a little bit like they did in the first movie before they knew it would sell ridiculously well.

Well you cut off the part of the post where I pointed out justifications for scout trooper. It is not a “type of trooper for forests”. When it comes to scout trooper it is not about the environment, it is about different type of unit. It not an infantry unit, it is a speeder unit. It operates alongside infantry (storm troopers).

Fair enough, they are after all bike troopers. But what about the Snow-troopers?

This is kind of unrelated to your point but the lenses on the Snow Trooper helmet are even worse.

And let’s not even get on the TFA design:

what sucks is that it looks so fucking cool.

Well, this photo from the SW OT visual dictionary, you could argue that the Stormtrooper helmets don’t actually have lenses meant to be seen through, but rather some form of “camera” or sensor which allows for enhanced eyesight (in the EU it even had a HUD).

And that brings up a totally separate problem…why are the eye lenses for the Storm Trooper helmet designed to be so restricted? Luke said he couldn’t see a thing in it and this picture here:

shows as to why that is. It seems weird that The Empire would have such faulty equipment.

Well, SW science is weird, and tends to care more about “does it look cool” than “does it make any sense”.

Fair enough, they are after all bike troopers. But what about the Snow-troopers? If the regular Stormtrooper armor works in the desert, not to mention the vacuum of space (with a few add-ons of course), then why did there need to be a specialized armor for cold environments?
Well, ESB had the budget for more variations, and Kenner toys were selling really well.
Also, we don’t really know what the Shore troopers are yet. Maybe they do have some type of vehicle. I mean we even got AT-AT drivers with their own helmet ad armor design. Why does vehicles need specialized armor, but certain environments do, while other doesn’t?. I’m not really complaining about any of this, I like the varied designs and their production histories, I just don’t see why a “Shore trooper” is so crazy, when we’ve had “Snow troopers” and “Scout troopers”, etc.

Also, do we really know that the Shoretroopers are infantry? None of us has seen the film yet, and they even look like Scout Troopers. They could literally just be a tropical variant of scout troopers.
(Also, do we even know yet if “Shore trooper” is the official name?)

Sorry to keep harping on this, but it’s not just strange, it’s technically incorrect. Italics are used for emphasis or quoting, not for organizing thoughts.

Surely there’s another method you could use.

Oh, I know it’s incorrect.
But for whatever reason I got it into my head several years ago that text in parenthesis should be in italics. So whenever I add some “extra” information I just instinctively write that in italics as well.

Like I said “bad habit”.

Also can we stop calling storm troopers elite troopers? When was that ever the case in the films?

Agreed.
Storm-troopers are just regular troopers. The new Death Troopers however, are “elite” troopers".

I think the whole calling Storm-troopers “elite” was just a marketing thing back in the 7’s that was used to make them sound cooler.

Completely irrelevant but why do you italicize haphazardly like this?

Just a bad habit of mine.
I like to separate my main statements from the rest of what I write; which is often just speculation, or me going off on a tangent.

I think the whole calling Storm-troopers “elite” was just a marketing thing back in the 70’s that was used to make them sound cooler. Also before there was more than one movie and a proper EU, I guess some just assumed that they were “elite” based on their armor. After all, in ANH we only see Storm-Troopers directly under Vader’s commander or on the DS.

I guess I just don’t mind there being a limited number of intelligent aliens. I’d much rather see familiar designs with a few new ones here n’ there than the other way around.
My problem with the PT aliens is that each one clearly had one mask mold. I appreciate that they painted em all a bit different, but it was clearly the same mask. They all had the same facial expressions and the same proportions. Or maybe I’m racist.

Wouldn’t that technically be “speciest”?

It was the 70’s. It was Marvel comics. Marvel did have a Conan comic at the time. I think Roy Thomas and some others worked on the Conan book.

And it’s not like there’s an official movie poster anywhere that makes Luke into some buff dude with a sexy Leia at his knee. 😉

Sure, but at least the Jung and Hildebrant posters gave Luke a face that resembled Mark Hamill. I just can’t shake that feeling that I’m seeing Conan in that first Marvel icon.
But of course, at this point they were doing a comic adaptation of a film that no one thought wold do particularly well, so they just added their standard Marvel-superhero flair to it.
I do really like it, I just also think it’s really funny and weird looking (but that’s part of the charm of those early SW comics).

SilverWook said:

Weird depictions of Luke actually abound in early poster concepts. I think this one only appeared in the Art Of Star Wars book.

But unlike the Marvel icon, at least none of these show Luke standing around floating in a vacuum.

Wow, that Polish one is so ugly. I mean it’s more Star wars-y than some of the other weird ones they made, but what is up with Luke’s face?
(Also you say he isn’t floating in a vacuum, true, but in this one he’s floating on a cloud, which I find really funny for some reason.)

However, while on the subject matter of funny-looking foreign SW posters; I’ve always liked this Italian one which actually kind of reminds me of a comic cover;

And this one is also really interesting to me (it’s so fascinating to see how people just had no clue what SW was back in '77);

This one is definitely back to Conan-Luke territory. Even Han looks a bit Conan-esque, his face is also pretty much identical to Luke. And Chewie is just straight up a gorilla.
Although it’s credited to an artist named John Solie, it looks like what I imagine a Frank Frazetta SW poster would have looked like.

And it undermines Luke being buff in ESB which was a physical example of his progression.

The funny thing is that the post-ESB icon showed a much thinner Luke.
(In all fairness though it was quite movie accurate.)

IIRC, they switched to using the droids for a while, then Han and Chewie, and then finally a group shot of our heroes?

Wow, you have a good memory.
There was also two more of just Luke, and one with Leia.

Third Luke icon

As much as I love the early Marvel SW comics, I never could (or can) get over just how silly-looking the little Luke icon in the top-corner of the comic covers were.

(Just look how buff he is. He looks more like a blond Conan the Barbarian with a lightsaber, as opposed to Luke Skywalker, farm-boy from Tatooine.)

Well, this furry guy (that we saw in the BTS video) is apparently called “Moroff” and is a Rebel soldier that will be seen on Scarif;

Source

And of course, he’s gotten his own action figure;

He’s also quite tall. Based on the BTS footage I assumed that we was quite small, but judging by this action figure he stands at roughly Chewbacca height. (This photo shows his height much better)
