Television Intro from “NBC Sunday Night at the Movies”
Aired and recorded the night of: 11/22/87

Great find. I love that Outer Limits style voice-over, it’s always fun when ads like this got creative instead of just cutting a bunch of movie clips together.

Wow, you’ve even got CED’s. I don’t think those ever existed on the Scandinavian market (or anywhere in Europe for that matter?) so I know very little about them, are they rare or expensive?

Next time I’m in the US I’ll have to track down one of those Star Wars to Jedi tapes. It’d be worth having in my collection just for that cover. Also, what format is that TPM box on the far left?

What (besides the movies, tv, and Disney+ content) do you LIKE about the Disney canon?
Time

Although I’ve found most the new comics to range from pretty decent to just plain dull (though I stopped reading just over a year ago), the Darth Vader series by Charles Soule was fantastic. IMO one of the best SW thing ever made.

Novel-wise, I think the first of the new Thrawn books was great, though the sequels were quite dull (plots just felt unimportant and padded). And I really enjoyed Dark Disciple, though that’s a bit of a cheat as its a novelization of unused TCW scripts.

Was RO shot on film or digital?

Digital.

Ep.7-9 however were shot on film.

Looking at RO now I would never believe it.

Yeah, it’s quite well done, though when the ANH outtakes show up during the battle of Scarif the contrast suddenly becomes much more obvious. Of course that’s 40+ year old film-stock, so maybe that’s an unfair comparison. There are a few moments where some digital “quirks” really stand out for me (f.ex. the red lights in this scene, but I tend to be quite picky about these things. Modern digital is great and only getting better, but I still prefer the organic and grainy film look…

It’s interesting just how much the Falcon looks like a retro flying saucer when you see it from this angle. I can’t really think of any moment in the movies where we got to see if from this angle except for when we see it enter the DS hangar bay, but even then it’s at a bit of a downward angle.

Time
  • 1996 VHS of the OT (Norwegian release). 1999 thrift purchase, and the only copies I have left from my childhood.
  • 1999 VHS of TPM (Norwegian release).
  • 2002 VHS of AOTC (Norwegian release). By the time ROTS was released I was old enough to be disillusioned by the PT so I never bothered to get a copy.
  • 2004 DVD set of the OT SE (Norwegian release). Only OT set I bought when it was new, and I mostly just bought it for the bonus features disc.
  • 1997 VHS set of the OT SE (UK release). Thrift buy just for the sake of having it in the collection.
  • 2015 Blu-ray set of the OT SE (Norwegian release). Only got it for the sake of getting the despecialized editions.
  • plus Blu-rays of all the new films as they were released.

(BTW. I just now noticed the little “1130” code at the bottom of my 1996 ANH tape and now its really bothering me. What a missed opportunity.)

Neil Scanlan Discusses Bringing Previously Unused Characters Into the Cassian Andor Series
https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2020/03/neil-scanlan-discusses-bringing-previously-unused-characters-into-the-cassian-andor-series.html

From MovieWeb:
“What is fun about this is, in many ways, I don’t think it feels different than working on a movie. It certainly doesn’t feel like we are making any compromises. It’s the same creative conditions in every department to do what we can do. We also have this backlog of characters. A lot of the characters that we built for all of the films either didn’t make it to the final cut, because that’s just the way that the film process happens, or that they are seen so momentarily that there is this wonderful second opportunity to bring back some of the characters that we’ve made and bring them to this new storyline in a more, shall we say, integrated way. I think it’s going to be tremendous. I find that it’s a second opportunity for everything that we’ve made, plus the opportunity of moving TV along, in a sense, at what will not at all be diminished as far as the level of quality, the level of things that we are going to try and achieve.”

Makes sense really, especially since they’ve already worked on this era, I’m sure there are plenty of unused concept art, alien costumes, animatronics and puppets that they can just pull out of storage and add to the series. The RO aliens were IMO the most OT-like designs we’ve gotten so far with the Disney movies, so it’s nice to see that these “old” designs are going to be re-purposed.

The 2004 DVD is one of the releases that I have the fondest memories of, and I remember the day I went with my mother to buy it quite clearly. However, much to my her surprise, after we got back from the mall I completely ignored the actual films and sat down and watched the 4th Bonus Material disc instead. I already had the 1996 VHS set so I wasn’t really that interested in the SE versions. I’ve always been fascinated by film-making, so the bonus disc was like my holy grail of BTS info at age 12.

Even though, like most people my age, I saw the SE’s first, I was very lucky in that when I asked for my own copies back in 1999 during the TPM hype, my mother went to a second-hand VHS & comics store (which just so happened to be near her work) and bought the 1996 VHS set not having any clue that there were different versions. However, I’ve lately started to wonder if maybe I have the store clerks to thank for me having grown up with the unaltered versions, since I remember some of them being quite knowledgeable about the stuff they were selling. So who knows, maybe they intentionally picked out the original versions when she showed up to buy the SW films for me.
