Blu Ray movies look...wrong
Time

It's a combination of things.

Some discs, both BD and standard DVD, have all the grain digitally scrubbed out of them.  Do a search for comparisons of "Predator: Ultimate Hunter" edition (in the blue packaging) vs the original release with the black artwork.

It also depends what size screen you have.  Anything below the mid 40's and the image isn't getting stretched as much, so it will naturally look more intense.

Another factor has to do with the 120Hz and higher refresh rates on the newer HD TVs.  Since its inception, TV refresh rate has been 60Hz - 60 lines drawn down the screen every second.  With 120Hz (and 240, and 480, and so on), more lines are being digitally created to go in between the existing ones, so now you're getting more detail and resolution than is actually on the disc.

And yes, it is "more" detail because it has to be drawn in the same amount of time.  If it was just a "faster" refresh rate, the film would only run 1 hour instead of 2 and it would look like you're watching it on fast forward.

The first time I noticed the difference was watching TPM on Spike on my sister's new 120Hz set a year or so ago.  It looked fake, like a fan film shot on a store bought video camera.  I tried to explain the difference to her but she didn't get it.  Then a couple of weeks later, a neighbor of hers experienced the same thing and described it as "too clear".  Then she got it.  She's not a videophile so she doesn't really care one way or the other as long as the TV works, but she understood the difference in what I saw.

So go back and check the specs on your equipment and see what some menu options are set to.  If you have a 120Hz+ TV, you might have a menu option to force the set to run at the standard 60Hz.  Set that and see if the "video" look goes away.

That being said, yes, certain things don't need HD.  I don't need to watch the local news in 1080p HD 5.1 surround sound.  Reality though is that we're in a transition phase right now - studios across the board are upgrading to HD equipment so there will eventually come a point where what's "high def" now will be "standard def" in the future when an "even higher def" is invented.  It's a continuous cycle.

And I also still need to erase the hardcoded subs from the HD footage.

Can you take bits from the 04 or GOUT and puzzle in sections of frame bottoms just big enough to cover the subs?  For the most part, you're going to be re-applying the correct subs over them so in the end, the slight dip in quality for that small percentage of the frame won't be that noticeable.

The Secret History of Star Wars
Time

The LOC-NFR is specifically for film, right, where the LOC in general is for any copyrighted works - film, video, audio, print, etc.?

As far as them coming to you for info, the only thing "sad" about it is that they've logically tried to get the necessary info direct from LFL and are probably getting stonewalled on it, so they had to look to other sources.  They're probably glad you're out there, as there are probably other films in the archive (or that the want in the archive) that they can't track down better sources for because they're not as well documented or researched.

You're probably more valuable to them than you think.

Anyway i just don't give a shit about this edit at the moment. I'm trying to save my dads house from being sold . I can't get a mortgage yet and have offered to pay my brother monthly to buy out his half of the house until we can get the mortgage to cover the rest, it looks like he just wants to sell the house. That house was our family home and there are too many memories of Mum & Dad for me to let it go, but he just doesn't seem to care. I even tried to get a loan for a few thousand that would probably persuade him to let me buy out his half, but we were refused that too . Seems like our house is blacklisted because of a bad loan that had nothing to do with us. But please don't mention anything about what i have said  on facebook or anywhere else because it will only make matters worse.

With all this and the fact that our house is a poison pit thanks to black mold and severe damp, which is ruining all our possessions, and we are going to lose this house because it's what is making my health worse, but if he sells the house we still won't have enough money to even but a small place and will have to use that money to rent somewhere until they sort out the house, which is going to take months. The last thing Mum and dad would have wanted was for one of us to be a lot worse off after they left us the house than what we were when they were alive.

I'm thinking of selling off my whole Star Wars collection, but i doubt that would raise enough money in enough time, plus i promised the whole collection to my kids when i die.

You obviously still have family stuff to deal with.  Get that under control first.  Work on the edit now and then when you need a break from dealing with that.  Use it as a way to clear your mind for a couple of hours every now and then - a temporary respite from the family issues.

And don't sell your whole collection.  Pick and choose the stuff you can part with, or just sacrifice the few big ticket items to get yourself in better financial shape.  If you unload it all, you'll regret it later when times are better.

Watching Empire on Spike right now and just noticed another possible continuity error.  In the final duel, right when Luke goes out the window, there's some extra pieces of window frame that are missing in the shot where he goes out compared to the same angle just prior.  Any way the frame pieces can be either removed from one shot or added to the other to straighten that out?

Easy there, killer! What's with the over reaction? I am always willing to be proven wrong and to learn something. Are you? You seem to be getting overly defensive about my accusation of her fake breasts being fake.

I could be totally wrong, but typically a woman doesn't go from this:

and this:

to this:

and this:

without some help from this:

As you can see from the first two photos, she was quite large and got ridiculously larger. I wouldn't be surprised if they look fairly natural in motion as your non-posted youtube videos intend to prove; from what I understand the larger they are prior to augmentation, the harder it is to tell there was work done post augmentation.

As I said, I prefer natural and more proportion. Though still too top heavy, I think she looked much nicer in her photos on SportsbyBrooks.com (where wikipedia told me her modeling career began) than the Rippley's Believe it or Not worthy tits that consist of the majority of the photos found through a GIS of her name.

Strangely ironic that the pics you use as proof of "before" are both shots where she's wearing a full size shirt that would naturally cover things up more where as the "after" shots are both bikini pics.

Find some "before" bikini pics or "after" shirt shots that prove your suspicion and I'll believe it, because it's obviously impossible that her chest could have continued to grow over the years, or that she could have worked out and exercised to get the rest of her body in a shape that would draw more attention to her chest.

There are also various forms of birth control that cause permanent hormonal changes in women, one of which being breast growth.  Birth control works by causing a woman's hormones to tell her body she's pregnant when she isn't.  One of the side effects of that false alarm is to increase milk production, which sometimes permanently increases breast size by stretching the muscle and tissue in that area.

Of course, since there's no documented proof one way or the other that any of this happened to her, it must be automatically a lie...right?

Whoa, a bit too top heavy there for my taste! I am a big fan of proportionate women; not to mention I don't care too much for things that are not original...

Spielberg comments on digital alterations to his films
Time

All this talk of CGI being "just a tool" and it in and of itself isn't good or bad and rather that the blame lay with the filmmakers' dependence on it all reminds me of something from that other "star" franchise - Star Trek, The Next Generation, specifically.

There was a "clip show" episode they did during the writer's strike where Riker was in sickbay owing to his wounds from some kind of malicious plant he encountered on the latest away mission.  At one point, Troi asks him if he wishes he wouldn't have gone down there because then he wouldn't be in this predicament.

Riker: "If you drop a hammer on your foot, it's hardly useful to get mad at the hammer."

The irony of the majority of this whole "to CG or not CG" discussion is that most of the arguments for or against are using "obvious" FX sequences as the basis for comparison.  There are tons of examples of CGI mattes in "everyday" shows like House, NCIS, CSI, Law & Order and 24.  And there are plenty of films that have tons of CGI and STILL get it right across the board like District 9.  Here's a demo reel for the effects for an assortment of films.

Just because you can quickly ID the bad ones doesn't mean that good ones don't exist.  The whole theory behind perfect special effects since the beginning of film has been that if you knew it was an effect then it failed.  The best FX are the ones you never knew were there.

Granted, when you get into sci-fi there's a certain level of "suspension of disbelief" that has to be figured into it, but I think the reason people can so quickly identify bad FX are specifically BECAUSE they already know it's an effect by nature of what it's trying to show you in the first place.  That makes the FX maker's job that much harder going in.

Thank you everybody for you kind words. It's a really tough time for us all at the moment. I really don't like having to sort through all Dads personal things and deciding what needs to be kept and what has to go. Just so much left to do before the funeral next Thursday. I have no idea when i will get back to the edit as i just don't feel like doing anything at the moment.

Get thru the funeral day, then sort thru Dad's stuff as the mood and need hits you.  My grandmother - my last surviving grandparent - died back in October and it took my dad and two uncles some time to sort thru her stuff, not because of volume but just because of memories and separating them from the practical need for different items to stay or go.  Sorting thru their stuff is part of the "closure" phase of the grieving process - don't rush it.  Take whatever time you need.

The edit (and the rest of us) will still be there when you're ready to resume.

Comics. (Not the books)
Time

I gotta go with the classics.  In no particular order...

  • George Carlin
  • Rodney Dangerfield
  • Richard Pryor
  • Bill Cosby
  • Gallagher (the rest of his show, not the 5 minutes of sledgehammer and watermelon mess that he's known for)

The next generation after them...

  • Richard Jeni
  • Dennis Miller
  • Tim Allen

And on a still younger note...

  • Adam Ferrara
  • Gabriel Iglesias
  • Christopher Titus
