Warb, the blu-rays would be useless unless Gaff already has a widescreen TV thanks to how blu-rays encode video information. Frankly it's absolutely atrocious compared to DVD, it's so awful I can't explain it other than by saying 4:3 picture is pillarboxed into a 16:9 frame on old TVs. So you get the full image, but it doesn't take up all the vertical space on your TV.

when did Gaff ever say he didn't have a widescreen tv?   If he doesn't have one, perhaps its time to get one.   The prices are coming down on them, I think.      As for the 4:3 picture being pllarboxed into the 16:9 frame on old tvs, I believe at least some blu-ray players have setting where you can have the sides of the 16:9 picture cut off instead of having the 4:3 picture pillarboxed.   Of course I could be all wrong about that.  I've never tried using a blu ray player with a standard 4:3 tv.

Most TVs can do that too.  All it's doing is zooming in on the image, which now cuts off the top and bottom of the picture, so you're losing the tops of peoples heads and burned in subtitles.

Lesser of two evils.

I'm going to have to write up something explaining why I think we think fan editing is ok and the SEs aren't.

The difference is simple - intention.  Revisited and other fan edits are done for fun, as a way to present the film in a new light, either improved from what already exists or an alternate version as a learning experiment.  The SEs were done strictly for profit - the opinions against the majority of the changes and the lack of attention given to things that could have been fixed but remain broken bear this out.

Spielberg comments on digital alterations to his films

I more or less agree with Mr. Spielberg. However, I have mixed feelings when new flaws begin to occur as a result of the cleaning up the image for modern HD.

He uses the original War Of The World as an example and states that he would not want to see the wires digitally removed. I respect his idealism of not wanting to mess with things, but the fact remains that those wires were never visible in the original film prints (all of the FX tests were done taking into account the kind of film stock they were using). Over the years however, different versions of the film appeared on different kinds of film stock, and the wires started to become slightly visible. The original DVD release actually used a print that thankfully did not have too much wire work showing at all. Then, when the anniversary edition was released, it featured a remastered transfer that had great color, but made the wires pop out as plain as day! In this case I think that removing the wires might have been acceptable, since it is being done just to return the film to it's original theatrical intention.

Or perhaps there is another solution... don't remaster everything the same way. Older movies were shot taking into account the resolution of the film image of the day. When these images are remastered with modern digital clarity, often the results are horrible. Backdrop paintings start to look way more obvious, as do make-up and wardrobe defects that were never intended to be visible... and out-of-focus backgrounds just look plain weird. These details personally take me out of the film.

Is it possible to remaster an image for HD without changing the film's original image? To just provide high quality images that match the theatrical image with quality color... and without any enhancements? I know very little about the processes used to do these things, but I hope there's a way, and I hope it gets used on some of these classic films. In the case of War Of The Worlds, I just watch my older DVD and only pop in the newer version if I want to hear the commentary.

Just my humble opinion...

Whether it CAN be done isn't the problem.  The issue is whether the person in charge of the conversion for a given film KNOWS whether to take film stock and other factors into account or is just running on auto-pilot and following standard procedure because they have a deadline.

Then why are the head shot pictures numbered 1-93, with #1 being the group photo?  That leaves 92 contestants.  I'm guessing there were a few that were absent for the group shot and whoever wrote the caption just counted heads like you did and didn't check their numbers against the individual head shot count.

The last three head shots:

#91 - Miss Cayman Islands
#92 - Miss China
#93 - Miss Russia

...are repeated.

Your move.

Ah, ok.  I didn't check the actual names/countries of the individual shots.

At this point, I might pick up the set when it eventually shows up in FYE/Saturday Matinee's used section, and even then I'd only really be getting it for the bonus material.

I've got Harmy's restorations for the OOT and Ady's versions will be my SE's.

Howard The Duck was way ahead of its time.

When HTD came out in 1986, the only successful superhero film franchise at that time was Donner/Reeve Superman, and even that was starting to fade out.  Burton/Keaton Batman was still three years away and the modern era of superhero films that started with Blade and X-Men was another 10 years after that.

Howard is also a very "out there" character - you can't explain him in one sentence and expect someone to "get it".  He's not your traditional hero with powers and a costume.  The only people who were able to really tune in to it (like me) were ones who knew enough about the character to run with the concept but not enough to nitpick the details that had to be changed/deleted/ignored for the transition to film.

The film also took a hard left about halfway thru with the whole Dark Overlord aspect which again, if you weren't a bit of a sci-fi comic book geek going in, was just going to throw you for even more of a loop.

Had HTD come out 20 years later in 2006 in the midst of all the other superhero films, it would have been much better received - nowhere near as high as Nolan/Bale Batman or even Raimi/Maguire Spider-Man, but it would have probably held its own against FF, Daredevil, Elektra and HellBoy.

Nominated for BEATIFICATION!!

Thanks.

That said though, I'm telling the truth up there, not just playing this thread's game.  Seriously - go watch HTD in the context of the past 10 years worth of superhero films - it's not the disaster people remember it being in 1986.

My only qualm is the battle of heroes music during obiwans fight with Vader, it should not be there, can you please remove it?, or it should be very stubble at least. It took away the emotional impact of Obi-wans sacrifice.

Other than that, perfect!!!!

Search for the Purist Edition.  In that, he undoes a half-dozen changes to make the film more true to the original, including losing the music during the duel.
