But I think this thread has set a record for most posts. At least I believe so (haven't seen any that had more (maybe adys ANH R thread but this one is taking the taco for ideas. ESB is alot of peoples favorite movie so it would only make sense that it would be so popular.

And like any sequel, more people are interested in it having seen the original. I didn't even know about ANH:R until someone posted on another message board I go to, and this was after it was released. I'm sure a lot of other people came here the same way.

'Public Enemies' and Inaccurate Locations
Time
ChainsawAsh said:

Just got back from the midnight showing of Public Enemies - I thought it was pretty good, though Christian Bale's character had no depth whatsoever.

But what really made me start this thread is this:

The movie opens at Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, Indiana. I live in Michigan City (unless I'm at school, in which case I live in Chicago), and the location is very inaccurate. I know it's supposed to be 1933, but even then it wouldn't have looked like that at all.

The movie depicts the prison (note that I have no way of knowing whether the prison itself is inaccurate or not, but I don't think it's right) as sitting in the middle of a wide open field of grass with a very straight dirt road in front. In reality, the road is curved by necessity, and the surrounding area is not very flat and is more of a forest than a grassy field. This completely ruined my suspension of disbelief, since this clearly was not Michigan City, Indiana.

Has anyone else here seen a movie where a scene or multiple scenes take place somewhere you're very familiar with, but it doesn't look anything at all like where it supposedly is? And when this happened, did it take you out of the movie? Because it sure took me out of this one.

Oh, and one important thing to note - this movie looks awful. It really reminded me of what I hate about digital filmmaking.

Pearl Harbor. There's a scene of "Roosevelt Field, Long Island, NY", an air field...the one Charles Lindbergh took off from for his famous trans-atlantic flight. Now, I live right here on LI and I've been going to Roosevelt Field, now a shopping mall, virtually all my life. Plenty of trees, but I don't remember seeing those giant California mountains anywhere around here. The highest point on LI, the north shore where the Sound is, is maybe 300 feet ASL, tops. Roosevelt Field is in Garden City, about halfway between the north and south shores. The majority of the island is around 100 feet ASL.

This seems like something Ady would have already caught (IF he considered it a continuity error)... but I did not see it listed anywhere as a fix, so...

... I took it upon myself to do a mockup:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4_tZ6Yd9fs

Even in 1997, the SE shot bothered me, not because it was poorly done, but because it seems to break continuity! In one shot, the Falcon and Slave 1 pull out of the garbage trail... only to wind up back in it again!

Deja vu? Groundhog day? Hmm...

i haven't listed it as a fix because the scene is being changed

Well that's a reply I wasn't expecting! Very interesting....

Glad to hear it. this is a troubling scene. Especially since it seems Salve I is basically chained to the Falcon. Seriously with their proximity, you'd have thought Fett's ship would have shown up on some instrument panel like in ANH when the Falcon alerts Solo to the TIE approach.

Depends how the sensors work. Maybe they're just detecting relative motion, something moving at a different speed than the Falcon itself. The TIEs set off an alarm beause they were moving faster than the Falcon. Fett matched the Falcon's speed, so relatively speaking, there was nothing there.

Info Wanted: Star Wars "rap" song - anyone have this?
Time

Ok, I was sifting thru my SW soundtrack files on the computer tonight - both downloaded and ripped from CD’s I own - and I realized I don’t have one track I thought I did…problem is, I don’t know the formal name of it so I can’t do a search for it.

It was some kind of disco/pop version of the SW theme that had this “rap” in the middle of it that was the artist’s version of 3PO’s story at the Ewok village from ROTJ. That puts it at 1983 or 1984, so it’s not the Meco one from 1977 (I have that one).

Anyone know the title of the track in question? Better yet, if you have it in MP3 form, can you just email it to me?

Indy BluRay pushed off til 2010, what does that mean for SW?

Well, what we have learned about all this is that we need to protect films from their own creators if they act like Lucas and destroy their own works and deny future generations of the greatness of the OOT. WE might as well destroy every single reel of film ever produced in the last 120 years if it means the no one can no longer watch the OOT.

No, I tend to think the rest of the industry sees what we see, that Lucas has become a blatant control freak and power monger. They see what he does and hear what he says and put it in perspective. They kiss his ass if they need his facilities like ILM or Skywalker Sound but beyond that they don't worry about his opinions that much.

Years ago Lucas said i believe in a book where interviewed by ebert that the 70mm prints of the originals with the six track mag track were the definitive presentation of the films. Even talking about how the best prints were the technicolor ones and they would be good for all time. He claimed the films were preserved. Only years later when the 20th anniversary was on the horizon for star wars did they find the negatives were not handled or stored properly and the stock used eastman kodak was completely faded.

Considering all the "revisionist history" we've been subject to from Lucas over the years, sometimes I wonder if this wasn't just another bullshit line to justify why they made the SE's in the first place.

Keep in mind that the interiors of the falcon take some size fudging compared with the outside too.

You mean there's more of this stuff? Damn you George Lucas! ;)

That particular example never gave me quite the same baffling head-scratching uncertainty as the 'Carbon Chamber' location did. It's an instance where I'll be glad to see Adywan show a version that will clarify things a little more, eventually. I'm happy to unlearn what I thought I'd learned about it, if need be. :)

A classic. Some of the pictures are gone, but the bulk of the info is still there.

The ONLY doubleofive
Time

I don't think you'll get anything out of them. "Violation of Intellectual Property" usually means that someone stole or is simulating your identity within an organization you're already a member of. If you had created "doubleofive" and he came along and created "doubleOHfive", then you might have something because their records would show that you were there first.

Good luck either way, though.

Futurama - Season 5 (or 6) DVD Preservation (* unfinished project *)
Time

Just set up your DVR to record all Futurama eps, then sit down and sort thru them every now and then. Since this is effectively four projects - one for each film - you don't need to have everything ready right now, just what you need to complete one set of eps. While you're working on one, you're collecting the material for the next one. Multi-tasking, man.

the problem i see with doing this is that even if a lightsaber can cut through anything there should probably be a drag factor when cutting through armor like that - think qui-gon melting the blast doors in tpm but not so severe. that may make it undo-able. plus ady didn't seem too keen on this idea iirc. still he's changed his mind before :)

Well, it's also the arc of the lightsabre.. does it go "through" the outer armor plate above Luke when he swings it? Even if the extra FX work is simply on the door itself (to make it a hole he's cut as opposed to a door that just opens for him) that would work, but one has to look at the path of the sabre as Luke swings it to see if the FX goes through solid objects without any interaction, regardless of what that interaction would be.

No, no need to re-design the hatch to look like a hole made by the saber.

Luke used his handy magnet-end rope and winch to get up there. He probably figured he'd cut a hole in one of the two leg engines. When he got there, he found this convenient hatch and went for that instead.

Sometimes it adds some dimension to leave your mind to fill in the blanks.

I think I might have a lead to the lost sand storm sequence footage

Isn't it weird Hasbro has made action figures from a cut scene for which we only have seen one second of!

Some people have taken that as a hint that the sandstorm scene may show up as an extra in some future release of the OT. Why else would Lucas allow them to make the figures, if not to be as some kind of back-handed promotion of something? Generosity isn't one of his strong points, as we know.
