Well I'm finally back to work on this again. The last month has been very hectic for me and I haven't had much time outside of work to do anything but sleep. Now that things are starting to get back to normal, I can once again concentrate on my project. This time around the capture looks cleaner with my new equipment, but I'm still tinkering with the filters since I've implemented some new ones. Here is my latest workflow:

* Capture all three ANH laserdiscs (I'm doing the first 7 min or so after the crawl at this point). Import simple crop script into VirtualDubMod for IVTC and DotCrawl. Save new avi.
* Combine all three using the TooT script. Import into VDubMod for MSU sharpen filter. Save new avi.
* Run through Laserschwert's De-Jaggy/De-Ghost script (also resizing to anamorphic) and import to VDubMod for MSU sharpen and denoiser filters. Save new avi.
* Color correct in Premiere.

This should turn out quite well. The other thing I've done this time around is use that PCI hack program I mentioned earlier to change the capture settings. This allowed me to disable the clipping on the sides and capture the full width of the video. Additionally, I used VirtualVCR's histogram to set the brightness/contrast levels instead of eyeballing it.

Screencaps should be up tomarrow if all goes as planned.

I'm already working on a Javascript-based function so you can select which images to display on each page. The way I envisioned it, there would be a checkbox for each image at the top of the page, and the user could select which images to view. Of course the images would all be preloaded so they'd pop up right away.

I'm not sure if I want to resize the anamorphic ones though. I just feel that they should be presented exactly the same way they come off the disc. Doing an enlargement on detailed shots could be a good idea though.

Well I had enough time tonight to redo all of the screenshots, and they're uploading as I speak. All of the finished versions that I have (Official, Dr. Gonzo, Isomix, and TR47) as well as Moth3r's screenshots, were converted from png to jpeg and set at the highest quality setting. The quality is much better and the file size is small enough not to give my site any bandwidth problems. Let me know what you think.

Anyway, Laserman's absolutely right. You may not be able to tell if swapping the green and blue affects anything other than the saber. Though I have to say that it still looks a bit light. But I'm sure there's a way you can adjust the saturation of just the saber.

Thanks for your input Moth3r. I'd have to say that while I believe you can never have too many screenshots, I can agree with you on the quality issue. I used a jpeg compression setting of 70 for pretty much all of the screenshots, and after looking more closely, I can tell there is way too much artifacting as a result. When I made them, I didn't really look very close and with my monitor set at 1280x1024, those small details are hard to see. I'm going to go back through and redo all the screenshots this week though.

New format is ready to go. I can't update Ash's post, so Jay will do the honors when he gets a chance.

Basically what I've done is create thumbnails with links to a page with the screenshots. Here's a little teaser.

If anyone has the Farsight version of ANH and would be willing to make screenshots with VirtualDubMod, please PM me. The new format for the screenshots thread I'm working on will now have 36 shots from ANH. I've already got shots from the Official dvd, Dr. Gonzo, TR47, and Isomix versions. I've also got what's currently available from all the works in progress.

You guys are going to love the new format. Can't wait to get it finished and put up.

Did the 97SE versions of ANH and ROTJ have their original opening fox logos? If so those would definitely be worth grabbing.

I think all of the screenshots except for the Farsight ones were done with a software DVD player. Ash did the Farsight ones in VirtualDubMod. Since he's gone at the moment and we were working together on the thread, I'm in the process of redoing all of the screenshots with VDubMod so we have a level playing field in which to compare.

You're absolutely right about my caps Moth3r. They definitely have a blue cast to them, and this will be corrected on my next set.

Expect some changes to the screenshots thread coming in the next week or so. The format is going to be redone and we will be adding the available shots from some of the new transfers on the block.

Very true. Even if you found one of the Runco players today, you probably wouldn't be able to get it out the door for less than a couple thousand.

But man would it be nice to capture off of.....

I haven't really had a chance work on my project lately. I've been working 10-12 hour days 7 days a week for a couple weeks now. Looks like I'll be working like this for another week too.

I really wanted to have ANH done by Christmas. This probably isn't goint to happen, but I'll probably have some kind of test disc up on myspleen around new year's.

Actually the Runco THX certified LD players were better (-54dB Video SNR), but good luck finding one of those things.

Why are you processing audio and video at the same time? You're much better off saving the audio to a different file in AE and converting it separately.

Please go to this thread. Some forum members are attempting this, but in my opinion it's going to look aweful unless they dumb down the DVD video to look like the LD. But if they do that, what's the point?

Anyway, seems like a lot's happened since the last time I checked in to the board. I'm not leaving for good, I just needed a few days to cool off. I have a new capture coming and I will post screenshots when I have time to finish it.

In addition to the oversaturated blue, the whole movie has a yellow tint to it. It is easiest to tell this on the star destroyers and of course the scenes on the tantive. Try lowering the amount of yellow and see how much a difference it makes on everything.

Ash is sending me a copy of the Total Movie DVD, so I'll probably be making a Troops DVD at some point. I had no idea there were two versions of the theme song. Are both versions present on the DVD?

Zion, it seems we are on the same side here with a few minor differences. Those being that you think it is still okay to make your altered work, so long as it's labelled as so. I would say that's good enough, and you have satisfied my complaints against you. I will explain this, by again comparing it to lying:

You no longer say it is your right to lie. But you do say you will continue to lie - but you agree to tell people when you do lie. This negates the negative effect.

I don't think we're on the same side here because the whole premise of our disagreement is over whether it is right to make changes to the films. But I guess we can agree to disagree.

And that lying analogy is pretty bad and really doesn't fit the scenario. I could just as easily compare your argument to a nagging woman. But what good would that do?
