Blu-Ray Attacks Microsoft, Microsoft Bites Back
Posted by Zonk on Friday September 30, @09:05AM

QT writes "Ars Technica has been following this week's next-gen DVD dramas closely. First, there's extensive coverage of the reasons why Microsoft backed HD-DVD, which was primarily inspired by mandatory support for copying discs to computers. The BDA, however, countered with an attack on Microsoft's reasons, and Microsoft returned fire. Richard E. Doherty, Microsoft's head of the media entertainment technology convergence group, said that 50GB Blu-ray disc are in fact many years away. Is MS playing games, or is Sony misrepresenting just how far along BD-ROM really is?" From the article: "HD DVD is proven to deliver 30GB capacity today, with the potential to deliver even greater capacity. The 50GB claim for BD-ROM discs is unproven and will not be available for many years to come, based on discussions with major Japanese and US replicators. Replicators not only do not have test lines running, they cannot even pre-order the equipment to begin evaluating this disc. They cannot judge the cost of these discs, or even whether they can be manufactured at all. Major replicators can mass manufacture 30GB HD DVD discs today and it's well understood that these discs will cost significantly less to manufacture than the lower-capacity 25GB BD discs." We previously discussed this topic when the announcement came out.

The fact is Blu-ray is boasting 50GB capacity "at launch," but there is no launch date specified. 50GB discs have been acheived, but only in lab tests. Also from blu-ray.com:

What's the difference between Blu-ray and HD-DVD?

BD-ROM
Storage capacity (single-layer) 25GB
Storage capacity (dual-layer) 50GB
Laser wavelength 405nm
Numerical aperture (NA) 0.85
Protection layer 0.1mm
Data transfer rate (1x) 36.0Mbps
Data transfer rate (movie application) 54.0Mbps (1.5x)
Video compression MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC VC-1

HD-DVD-ROM
Storage capacity (single-layer) 15GB
Storage capacity (dual-layer) 30GB
Laser wavelength 405nm
Numerical aperture (NA) 0.65
Protection layer 0.6mm
Data transfer rate (1x) 36.0Mbps
Data transfer rate (movie application) 36.55Mbps
Video compression MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC VC-1

Yes, it would be nice if Blu-ray won or if HD-DVD had the specs Blu-Ray does. I think one reason why companies are pushing to get next-gen dvd technology out is to make up for the money what they've been investing in it the past few years. I'm in the same boat as GundarkHunter. It seems a little too soon for a new media format. I don't own an HDTV right now (though that will change in the next 6 months I hope), and I'm just starting to get into burning on DL DVD media.

People still buy and watch movies on VHS. What are these people going to think when they go to Wal-Mart to find that their tapes are being taken off the shelves to make way for the new DVD media? They will definitely not be ready to adopt a new format, and rioting will ensue I'm sure.

But damn, would it be nice to author a DVD with 54Mbs of bandwidth at your disposal, instead of the seemingly-archaic 10 we have to work with now...

Updating the Thread Indexes
Time
I've been wanting to update the index threads for a while now. I wanted to dive into the bowels of this board and dig up all the relevant threads that deserve to be included in both the Index of Linked Noteworthy Threads and The big DVD thread index. But since I'm busy working on other things like new X0 articles and you guys are here anyway, I thought you could help me out.

If you can think of any thread that deserves to go into either one of these indexes, please post it here. Any thread on any existing edit, or any non-abandoned work in progress is a candidate. Also any threads dealing with any facet of the edit process, such as "anamorphic vs. letterbox discussion," "Definitive Collection DVD Covers," or the "OT glitches and fixes thread" are worthy candidates.

I know several of you have PM'd me and requested your threads be included. If you could post those requests again here as well that would be a big help. Going through hundreds of PMs to find your request could take a while.

Whoever posts the most threads gets a cookie.

Idea: Revenge of the Sith: Extended Edition

I myself won't have any opinion until I've seen the DVD and all the deleted scenes. If you ask me, things like the Yoda Dagobah thing and the rebellion meeting scenes are nice background tidbits, but might not work at all if put into the film. The Yoda scene might, but I thought the original cut was good about not getting too far away from the fate of the main characters in those ending shots.

Check it out fellas, the Broncos just made the Cheifs look like a high school team. Before the game, everyone was saying how the Chiefs had such a great defense and their offense was going to run all over Denver. Funny how things went completely the other way. I can't say I knew it was going to happen like this, but I knew the Broncos were going to win this game.

Not just for playing injured, but that they played exceptionally well while being injured. McNabb had two great games in a row while playing injured. And most kickers in the league wouldn't have gone back on the field after what happened to Akers on the first kickoff.

Look at me speaking so highly of the Eagles. Enough of that, go Broncos!

The serious problems for the Eagles right now are kicker David Akers with a hamstring injury and McNabb with that sternum injury. Those two guys are the reason why the Raiders are winning right now. Akers can't kick anything and McNabb can't complete any passes.

Sometimes do you feel like you should give up on the cause?
Time
Never give up the cause, if we do then the bearded flannel man wins.

Realistically speaking, Lucas won back in '77 and has been looking down ever since.

The way I see it, there are two kinds of Star Wars fans. There are the ones who first experienced the saga back before 1997 and cherish the originals for what they are. Either you saw the films in the theater or, like me, you grew up in the mid to late eighties watching them on laserdisc and VHS. These are the fans that for the most part condemn any sort of tinkering to the original versions, and long for them to exist on their DVD shelves. The second type of fans are those who first experienced the saga after 1997. They either aren't familar with or do not cherish the originals the way the others do. These are the fans who say things like "Jar-Jar should be in A New Hope," or "Han Solo looks cooler dodging Greedo's shot!"

What I've come to realize is that people are going to have their opinions about these films and you're hardly ever going to change them. I could sit here and list 50 reasons why the originals should have been released on DVD instead of the SE's. Of course then someone else would come along and list 50 reasons why the SE's deserved to be released instead, and with even more digital alterations.

A lot of people think that Lucas went crazy sometime in the nineties and is only doing this for the money. Who knows his true intentions, but one thing is certain: from the Admiral Ackbar cookie mold to Revenge of the Sith toilet paper, there has always been some obscure items with Star Wars slapped on them.

So would I say I've given up? I guess I have on other people, but not on getting the O-OT on DVD or HD.
