.: The XØ Project - Laserdisc on Steroids :. (SEE FIRST POST FOR UPDATES) (* unfinished project *)

Ah yes, I'm actually thinking of the P&S discs that were done in '85. The letterbox versions were from the same telecine as the SC set. I stand corrected.

I have a set of the US pre-THX LDs and they don't really look very good to be honest. The color looks closer to the actual film, but seems to have an overall shift toward green, which I think has a lot to do with the age of the film at the time of the telecine. The THX cleanup they did for the Definitives took care of a lot of that. I'd say the color difference between these and the THX LDs is as close as any current DVD transfer compared to the official DVDs (i.e. a huge saturation difference). The big problem with these is the fact that the video is a lot softer overall. I would hope that the SC LDs don't have this issue.

Our initial captures of all three films on the XØ have been complete for some time. However, the THX editions -- the Definitive and Faces sets -- as you know have problems with fast motion shots because of the temporal filters they used in the cleanup process. We are entertaining thoughts of capturing several pre-THX sets with the XØ including the Special Collection LD's. Of course, the SC set does not come very cheap and we're a little too low on fundage at the moment to buy them off eBay.

It is not very smart to start a website about an oOT project and announce when and where it will be available.

You might want to read further back in this thread to find Mike's intentions. It's been addressed many times in the past.

Because not everyone checks the site all the time, and not everyone who finds our site knows about OT.com and this thread. It's a way we can help people "remember" us and get them back to the site for the rest of the goodies. Most successful web sites do this.

The version number is just that -- the version of the script used to create the TC print. Our third member wrote it and had many incarnations along the way.

Because we're all Scandinavian.

Yep, haven't touched ESB or ROTJ yet. Though from the looks of things there isn't nearly as much to clean up on those two.

Read through the 2nd newsletter and the cleanup is pretty impressive. One thing I was curious about is if you plan on using any fo the P&S discs to impove on detail.

We have kicked this idea around a little bit. It would be difficult to do to say the least. We'd have to author some sort of script that could overlay the P&S and keep it in the correct position, blend it seamlessly with the letterbox footage, and keep the color tones consistant. Of course, this is all assuming the quality of the P&S LDs is good enough to use -- there are no THX P&S discs to my knowledge and the pre-THX ones have their own issues.

Wondered what the progress was on the t-shirts?

We've come up with a few ideas for new designs, but what we're thinking of doing is running a contest where anyone can submit their own design. The old thread had a few good ideas submitted that were pretty cool. The winner could receive fabulous prizes like an all expenses-paid trip to Scandinavia to find out what sound "Ø" really makes.

You have a pm. Anyone else not receiving their newsletter please double-check that you have confirmed your email address with the system (clicked on the link in the initial subscription email) and that the newsletter didn't find it's way into your junk mail folder.

It appears to be on anoTher very well known site. So if it's ok For them to post it, shouldN't it be ok to post it on here?

Well see this is the way things work. TFN will not host the video themselves or (knowlingly) allow a user to post a link to the video. So what they do instead is post a story about another site that is hosting the video, which is the link that THX-1138 also provided here. TFN gets LFL's attention faster than any other site on the net, and in turn the site hosting the video gets LFL'd:

It's in this site's best interest to stay out of these legal battles as much as we can.

However, there are certain other sites out there that post stuff like this regardless...with the help of some of their...ahem...favorite users.

PROJECT UPDATE - See this post for the latest project status: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/The-X-Project-Laserdisc-on-Steroids/post/461494/#TopicPost461494

Welcome to the second edition of the XØ Project discussion thread. The original thread can be found here.

This thread will primarily be used to discuss the project and our official web site. <span>Please do not use this thread to inquire about when it will be finished or how you can get a copy.</span> We will reveal this information when/if it is evident.

What’s an XØ?

The XØ Project gets it’s name from the Pioneer HLD-X0 (that’s <span><span>X-ZERO</span></span>) Japanese NTSC laserdisc player – quite possibly the best LD player ever made. It easily outperforms any of the American ‘Elite’ series players like the CLD-97 and CLD-99.

The XØ Project will be spearheaded by MeBeJedi and Zion. Our third member, who wishes to remain anonymous, is another amazingly talented videophile who contributes more than his fair share. Laserman, who started the project, is no longer involved due to health issues and personal reasons.

So, What Are You Guys Doing?

First and foremost, the project aims to be an archive preservation of the Original Star Wars Trilogy laserdiscs in the best quality possible. We are culling video from a number of different sets. These include, but are not limited to, the US Definitive Collection set, the US “Faces” set, and their Japanese equivalents.

Every single frame will be looked at and corrected. Fixes will be limited to dirt and film damage removal, color correction, and stabilization. Wherever possible we will be using the actual celluloid film for reference.

Glitches including matte lines, saber colors, and frame jumps will not be fixed in the initial version. A possible second version could include fixes to matte lines and garbage mattes, but keep the rest of the “glitches” intact.

The finished archive will form a perfect base for any future restoration project or fan edit we might do afterward.

What Will Your Final Output Format(s) Be?

Possibilities include an uncompressed letterbox master copy for posterity, DVD-9 for daily viewing pleasure, and 720P anamorphic for largescreen/projector viewing.

What Equipment Are You Using?

A project of this magnitude and intricacy demands a lot of specialized hardware and software. It all starts with a properly calibrated video chain – LD player, capturing system, and monitors. Software being used includes AviSynth/VirtualDub, Combustion, and Boujou. We will go more in depth on this on the website.

So What’s On the Website?

Our website is our main hub for everything that’s going on with the project. Updates to our progress usually pop up on the website before anywhere else. We also send out a periodic newsletter with the latest news about the project.

The other intent of the website is to educate people on how to do their own transfer through informative articles. We want it to be a haven for other enthusiasts to learn the tricks of the trade and produce results similar to our own. The theme is obviously centered around the transfer of the Star Wars LD’s, but these ideas can be applied to many other projects.

How Can I Help?

A project like this leaves very little room to skimp on materials. In addition, we have to be able to ship things between each other. If you feel compelled to contribute to the cause, you can do so by contributing monetarily. We accept donations through PayPal on the website.

Non-linear programs like Adobe Premiere can do it for sure. They'll be able to rotate the video to any degree or position. If you're looking for a free alternative, VirtualDub would be the easiest. It has a filter called "rotate" that can rotate the image 90 degrees either way.

I knew this day would come but I always hoped it wouldn't. Get well Laserman and you're always welcome back if you want. We'll hold down the fort in the mean time.

On a lighter note, I've uploaded the last newsletter article to the web site. The next issue will be out in the next couple days, so sign up now at the site if you haven't already or you'll miss it.

The first of the new articles we've been talking about will be up this week as well, so stay tuned.

This Movie must be stopped!!!!
Time
This just goes to show how the movie industry is so awful right now. Instead of new, original ideas, we're stuck with sequels of sequels that should never have happened, and remakes of old films. Unfortunately, there seems to be no end in sight to this formula outside the incorrect assumption that we need more superhero movies and war epics about the middle east.

I haven't seen many Raider games this year, but I've heard people say that without Moss, the offense is hopeless. I guess that wasn't the case yesterday with Jordan having a good day, but what's the deal with the other receivers? Are they underachieving or are the "experts" just wrong?

I think its time to give McNabb a rest and start Koy. Clearly, McNabb's injuries have rendered him incapable of playing anywhere near his usual level. He looked terrible out there, yet again

Ah yes, the infamous Koy Detmer. Former Colorado Buffalo who was once 2nd on the depth chart behind Kordell Stewart.

I'm not sure what would be better for Philly at this point, but with the Broncos coming off a tough loss to the G-men yesterday, they'll be hungry for a win at home against the one-dimensional Eagles.
