Alright, to clear up the confusion, here's the story. Laserman originally got a capture from nin, but it wasn't used except in the early 'pre X0 Project' pics that were on Laserman's website.

The master we are working from now is not from nin's player due to some problems in the original capture. (No fault of nin's, though Laserman never went into exactly what the problems were.)

The footage we are currently using is from a Japanese X0 capture from a person who wishes to remain unknown -- both to protect themselves from lawyers and to protect themselves from being inundated with requests to transfer people's discs for them. The process of doing 3 movies in CAV was enough to make her never want to capture anything ever again. So yeah, don't ask. She is not to be confused with our mysterious 3rd member however.

As stated before, the X0 capture footage we currently have is all in all better than the SC footage. I think the buzz around here lately for the SC discs is a little misleading in that people automatically think that a full SC capture is the only way to go. And this is simply not true. We will put up some examples in the next week or so that will show you the difference with what we are currently working on, and our experiments with the SC. Some of you may be pleasantly suprised.

I don't have any doubt we'd be able to to a better job of cleaning it up than the THX gurus did back then. The real question is whether or not the quality difference is enough between our X0 Definitive/Faces captures and the SC. My screenshots there are not off an X0, and I can tell you the X0 cap puts that Faces shot to shame, though the detail in the star destroyer is still victimized by the temporal smoothing.

I think I should reiterate that the X0 version will be considerably better than the master that the LDs where pressed from, especially for widescreen TVs. So to the people looking to maybe buy an X9 or X0 to view SW, save your money - it won't look as good as our final product anyway! There is only a certain level of quality you can achieve from the LD's before things like color correction and dirt & scratch removal are even considered.

The X0 capture files we have at the moment are more than sufficient for most of the project, though some shots are subpar by nature of their LD pressings. What we are really looking for is captures from rare/alternate versions which may have detail that is lacking in our current versions (i.e. the Japanese SC set). I've lost track of time the past few days so I haven't gotten to compare sega's discs yet. I should have a go at it tonight.

While I would agree that CCE is probably the best encoder out there, I have to disagree that using it or another multi-pass encoder would drastically improve the video. Sending your raw capture straight to the encoder is going to be a hefty job for any program (especially at DVD5) with all the video noise intact. Multi-pass encoding would help, but really you'd only see a big reduction in macroblocking if it went DVD9 instead. (FYI, the X0 will be multi-pass CCE DVD9 unless something better comes along.)

Everything we do and intend to do to each shot and each frame is documented so that we have a reference. We're always on the lookout for better capture options, and in the event we receive a better capture, we can easily go back and do the same things to the new footage. (This is also where our TC print comes in very handy.) In reality, the things we're most concerned about right now are reducing the amount of "rot spots" in the video and the like. Having three copies of an LD captured via X0 and TooTed together would be the ultimate source.

nin, thanks so much for your help thus far. It's true that we got a better capture on our second try with a Japanese setup. I'm sure getting your players serviced and possibly tweaked combined with our modified PDI card and specialized hardware/software setup would make an even better capture. We'll definitely be in touch.

Article is up!

The thing I loved about Encore was the way you could import photoshop files as menus. I also liked how amidst the user-friendliness of it, you could still tap in and get to the code level if you wanted. I had the very first version, which wasn't very stable and I could never get it to import DTS. I would expect those problems to have been solved by now though.

Photoshop, Premiere, and After Effects are the programs I use for making DVD menus. You will find that After Effects has better quality transitions than Premiere, and the more technical things you want to do with your video can be done easier and more efficient with it. Master all three programs and you will have a very powerful package in your arsenal.

I have not yet compared sega's SC ROTJ to my US discs, but I should be doing some caps on my player tonight and have something to show you tomarrow.

Also, look for our newest article to be up within the next hour.

And how about that wind in Chicago today? That was probably the most off-target field goal attempt I've ever seen. The orange Bears jerseys are the old '40s jerseys I believe, but they look out of place, just like Miami's orange jerseys. Personally, I think the only orange jerseys that look cool are the Broncos' third jerseys and of course their throwbacks, but I'm biased.

And speaking of the Broncos, good on them marching into Oakland and sticking it to the Raiders. I have a feeling they'll be 12-4 or better at the end of the season. They have a realistic chance of going 13-3 or 14-2 this season. And to be honest, I have a feeling the Colts will lose at least 2 games this year, so watch out for Denver to challenge them for home field advantage in the playoffs. The Colts have to play at Jacksonville, Cincinnatti, and Seattle, and at home against Pittsburgh and San Diego. I guarantee they'll lost at least two of those games.

Also, props to Green Bay for sticking it to the Falcons. Good on ya Favre.
