Here's something you can try if you're bored: Line up the X0 TC Print with any PAL or pre-THX transfer. What you will notice is that certain frames in places where the film was spliced are actually missing from the PAL and pre-THX versions. Mostly these are the frames at the beginning and end of shots that have yellow tape at the bottom. For example, check out the end of the shot where Vader says "There will be no one to stop us this time!". I'm not 100% sure about the PAL, but there are actually 3 frames missing from the Special Collection at the end of that shot and 2 at the beginning of the next shot. When people talk about audio sync issues, this is one of the big reasons why it happens.

We haven't created TC Prints of the other two films, as we haven't started working on them yet.

I think Mielr asked about that as well a while back. We have a copy of the original film, as well as a collection of film cells for reference. We also have a few other things that I will not get into at this time.

Claim: The Laserdisc masters is the way how the OOT looked in theatres back then.
Answer: Absolutely not. The original trilogy was released to theaters in 35mm and 70mm film formats. A standard 35mm film copy can hold as much picture information as a HDTV image. 35mm negatives or 1st generation copies can even yield 3 times the resolution. If someone would request an OOT release which matches the theatrical experience, one would have to request at least a HDTV transfer. No to mention those people, who saw the 70mm release of Star Wars back then...

This doesn't make any sense to me. The answer seems to go off on a tangent about HDTV when the claim makes no allusions to it at all. Of course the film looked better in the theater than on home video. To ask for an HD transfer of it is justified, but to me the claim is only referring to the version of the film, not its resolution.

For anyone who has downloaded it, you'll notice that the very first frame of our TC Print is 01:00:07:19. It doesn't start at 01:00:00:00 like you'd expect. When we say "01:00:00:00 @ 'PICTURE START'" on the color bar screen, what we mean is that would be the very first frame of the actual film reel (the picture start frame). We actually counted on our copy of the film how many frames there were from the beginning of the reel to the first frame of the Star Wars logo. So when you see it pop up at 01:00:40:12, it is actually synced up to the film itself.
Edit: Good call Karyudo! At least someone got it.

Also, GenCon will be offering special room package rates online later this year. I'm not sure what exactly they are or how much they'll be, but I'm guessing they'll have information up on starwarscelebration.com as soon as it's available. Those will most likely sell out very fast, so don't miss out. Just for the record though, our hotel rates we booked ourselves at Celebration III were about the same price as the ones GenCon offered online.
The point I'm trying to make though is that you should at least be thinking about this now instead of three months before the con when you'll be lucky if you can find a hotel room within 20 miles of the convention center.
If anyone has any questions about the Celebration, feel free to post them here or PM me. I went to Celebration II and III (but somehow missed the first one which was held in my hometown).

Future newsletters will be available online. I'll get around to posting the old ones eventually. It's just that at the moment I'm busy editing a film, color correcting it, fine-tuning software that will keep track of timecode entries, creating menus, cleaning up footage, and attempting to keep people updated about it.

This is exactly how all that inter-site drama crap gets started. A bunch of regulars on one site say, "hey guys, wouldn't it be great if we all got together and taught those other guys a lesson?" I'm not saying you're going to blab to everyone that you're a member of this site, but news has a way of reaching the other side regardless. And when the guys at SW.com realize it was a group of regulars here that "attacked" their board, what do you think they're going to do? We're all Star Wars fans man, even if we have differing opinions. Don't go starting something just because a group of people - or the bulk of an entire community for that matter - disagree with you.
Sorry if I pissed in your corn flakes, but you said you wanted to do all this AND still be on good terms here at OT. I was just letting you know that I don't think that's possible.

If you're a troll, you're a troll. It doesn't matter where you post. If you choose to go to SW.com and do anything you can to get banned, so be it. But you've lost any and all respect I have for you. You're no better than the people who come to this board and ruffle our feathers.
Cable-X1, it seems to me you have a serious problem with reality. If you choose to throw your stuff away and forget about it because of what it's become, that's your problem. But don't go taking it out on a community of people that had nothing to do with it. If you want to be remembered as a serial troll that no one is going to care about in a week, I can't stop you.
I'll leave this thread open for now.

The more I look at this, the more I'm sure that this is in fact our version and not a fake. We did create a low bitrate file for sharing between ourselves, and it was slightly different than the screenshots you see in the newsletter.
A lot of time was spent trying to get the timecode right, and we went through a couple different ways of creating the SMPTE timecode and boxes around the text. The version you saw in the newsletter was the second to last iteration. The one that has been uploaded to usenet was from our final version. Ironically, the screenshots from the newsletter actually show the incorrect version number, as version 3.03 was our final version. I must have had my AviSynth files mixed up when I created those screenshots.
So in short, the file that has been uploaded to a.b.starwars was created by us. It is not a fake, but it is a very low bitrate DivX encode of our original DC capture. It was not created to show off the quality of our capture, but to use as a tool for referencing every frame of the film. Somehow the file found its way into someone else's hands and was uploaded to usenet. I still do not know how that happened, and I am more than irritated at the moment. The more I think about it though, the more I feel that perhaps we should have uploaded this ourselves a long time ago. At any rate, it's out there now for anyone to use.
Here are a few screenshots from my unresized, uncompressed AviSynth file loaded in VDubMod:

(Please note that these frames are not cleaned up or color corrected)

The rest of the world probably won't agree with me, but there should be some sort of time out system applied as well. The fact that players have to fall on the ground and pretend they're injured just to give their team a chance to catch their breath and get some water is appalling. I can't believe it's considered good strategy to fake an injury. This is the number one reason why I cannot watch this sport and enjoy it.

All things aside, this doesn't change our focus or determination to finish our project. If nothing else, perhaps other preservationists and fan editors will find it a useful tool in their own projects.

But I can't see how this upload could be our TC print. Very few people ever saw it - probably no one outside our group ever did. I'm not able to get on newsgroups at the moment since my Giganews limit has been exceeded for the month, so if anyone could post some screenshots I'd appreciate it.
