16mm dual mono

I think that “dual mono” refers to 2 separate mono tracks (allowing, for example, to select the language in a dual mono dolby digital broadcast), which is not the case here : it is exactly the same track on left and right channels.

("“Dual mono” indicates two completely separate, independent, unrelated channels" : https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/what-is-dual-mono-versus-stereo/)

So the best word to describe this 16mm sound is just “mono” without “dual”.

Of course they aren’t terrible. They’re just terrible compared to the originals.

Even compared to the originals, they’re not that bad. ANH is great, ESB is okay, and RotJ has some glaring issues, but is otherwise enjoyable. TPM is really fun (save for some bits in the middle (mainly Coruscant)), AotC is a slog (the only SW movie I might say is genuinely bad), and RotS is a freaking masterpiece. Overall, I don’t see any overall difference in quality between the trilogies.

At least I’m not alone!

Here is an interesting article that tries to give TPM a second chance: http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/star-wars/16258/in-defence-of-the-phantom-menace

Another one that says basically the same thing, with a box-office ranking perspective: https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2017/09/01/star-wars-box-office-the-phantom-menace-is-one-the-leggiest-blockbusters-ever/#15af9f38ab0f

This one is written in French but is IMHO the most interesting thing written about TPM : https://www.ecranlarge.com/films/dossier/972763-star-wars-et-si-la-prelogie-de-george-lucas-n-etait-pas-aussi-catastrophique-qu-on-le-pense
It says that the errors made in the prelogy ARE what makes the prelogy interesting.
Here is the summary :

If the prelogy accumulates errors and mistakes of taste, it is nevertheless exciting in what it tells once it has been sorted. At a time when Disney shamelessly capitalizes on the franchise and seems determined to prolong it ad nauseam without really digging the heart of his subject and always using the same strings, Lucas had made us an original proposal and highly subversive. To criticize both the system he created himself and the world in which we all live by using something universal and winning the support of everyone to convey an important message.

Yes the result is wobbly, yes Lucas has not lived up to his ambition, but that is precisely what makes his work so exciting. To see the struggle of a man against himself, against his creation that has surpassed him and an audience that thinks that the saga belongs totally to the audience and that its inventor must go in its direction.
Somewhere comes the idea that George Lucas may have managed his bet. Not in the films itself but in their context and reception. He proved to us that we were all potential dictators as soon as we touch our heart, our instinct and our passion and that it takes little to swing from the dark side.

(I do not try to make you change your mind, but just to show that apart from the hardcore fans of the original trilogy, other opinions, sometimes well written and well documented, can also exist.)

NO. Hard no. If you don’t like the OT, why are you even here? The scripts are good, the story is great and the characters are wonderful. ALWTF.

Well, I love the OT, for the reasons I explain (I was a child, I was amazed by all this universe and this experience).
But while I love it, I don’t think that it is the best films in history.

For the rest, I suspect that everyone will not agree with me, but that is precisely the purpose of a forum: give and share his opinion…

What exactly are the problems with the prelogy?

  1. Bad directing of actors, and in fact bad actors (with the exception of Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor) …
OK, but can not we say the same thing about the original trilogy where, honestly, Mark Hamill is as convincing as a ficus, and Carrie Fisher owes her aura only to the returns that Harrison Ford gave her?

  2. Unbearable character (Jar Jar), only intended to please children …
OK, but frankly, are the Ewoks more acceptable? I remember, in 1983, being very disappointed by the Ewoks, I thought it was a heresy from George to close such an important work with teddies. I was a lot more shocked by the Ewoks than by Jar Jar 16 years later.

  3. Poor scenario, script errors, weak dialogues …
OK, but can not we say the same thing about the original trilogy (except from parts where Harrison Ford had to rewrite his texts, or where Irvin Kershner imposed his vision of things)? Can not we say that George has no inspiration since 1980?

  4. Inconsistencies and illogisms with the canon …
OK, but the original trilogy is also incoherent with itself (unless you accept that stormtroopers and AT-ATs, designed to kill, are destroyed by teddy bears with wooden logs …)

What I want to say here is that, IMHO, we like the original trilogy not for what it is but for what we were when we discovered it: children or teens amazed by an unprecedented cinematic experience.
And we do not like prelogy for the same reasons: we were then jaded adults knowing every corner of Star Wars by heart, and nothing could impress us or find grace in our eyes.
But for me, the original trilogy is far from being a masterpiece, and prelogy is far from being a disaster.

ZaneFlare,

Thank you for your message!
Actually, PaNUp ™ is not “more or less rotoscoping”. It basically merges two sources of poor resolution to get a new source with a better resolution.
This topic (written by the creator of the word “PaNUp”, Mister ^…^ aka spOrv, let us render to Caesar what is Caesar’s) explains the purpose of this technique: http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/PaNup-or-how-to-upscale-PAL-NTSC-capture-and-live-quite-happy/id/15928

But I’ll also do some rotoscoping to “repair” some scenes (replace aliens by humans in the Senate scene, remove the bridge in the Naboo by night scene) and to reconstruct some scenes (arrival on Coruscant).

Everything about the bridge, the clouds and the re-rendered CGI is already discussed on this forum (see RU08’s posts), but I’ll post about it, with frames numbers and screen comparaisons as soon as possible when I’ll finish the reconstruction I’m currently working on!

The entire podrace is available in its theatrical cut (in HD) in the Digital Collection bonuses, this part is not an issue.

If memory serves correctly, I believe the shot of Watto yelling Sebulba is in the Extended scene of the Complete Podrace Grid Sequence .

Your memory serves correctly!
But other scenes remains missing in HD.

What parts remain SD only:

  • arrival on Coruscant: from Palpatine’s office to Anakin talking with Jar Jar (was replaced by another taxi scene on DVD, HDTV and BR)
  • Senate scene : human extras replaced by Aliens on DVD, HDTV and BR
  • Naboo’s palace : one bridge added in HD (on DVD, HDTV and BR)
  • CGI effects re-rendered in HD : windows reflects added, background sharpener (ia clouds in night sky) (on DVD, HDTV, BR)
  • entire HDTV version suffers from Digital Edge Enhancement (halo artifacts), and entire BR version suffers from DNR
  • entire HD version is missing theatrical colors (too much red everywhere in HDTV and DVD, all scenes manually regraded for BR)
  • entire HDTV and DVD versions are missing 15% of the image because too much cropped (ia there is a second moon near Coruscant that is only visible on BR)
  • entire BR version is missing original Yoda puppet
-… (I probably forget other points)

The main HD lacks are the arrival on Coruscant, human extras in Senate and bridge near Naboo Palace. Other points are less important (but still missing in HD).

I’m actively working on a HD theatrical reconstruction (missing scenes can be achieved by merging NTSC and PAL sources - LD and TV broacasts, as spOrv calls this process “PaNUp” ™ ). It takes time but everything goes well.

Dealing with People Selling Fan Projects

Thank you, Frank Your Majesty!
As “fair use” is defined as “the use of LIMITED AMOUNTS of copyrighted material”, I am not even sure that it can be invoked here, even though it is only broadcast in a family circle: it is not a “limited amount” of copyright material, but an entire work.

Frank your Majesty said:

But Harmy is publicly distributing his project himself. He posts about it and he (indirectly) tells people how to get it.

… plus he has his own Facebook page dedicated to his work.

Thus, if I understand, we must be careful and not report those ebayers to the relevant copyright protection agency for selling bootlegged content, otherwise we could cause problems to Harmy, to other fan editors, to MySpleen and to this Original Trilogy community.

Harmy isn’t publicly distributing his projects himself. Thus he isn’t responsible for the objective breach in copyright because someone else posted his work. Get it?

As far as I know, the mere fact of modifying a work without the prior consent of the author constitutes an infringement of the author’s intellectual property rights, regardless of whether or not it is distributed.

Would there be a professional lawyer on this forum who could give his opinion?
