I’ve been lucky enough to meet Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke) a couple of times and I’ve also met Dave Prowse (Darth Vader) at a convention.
I just got back from watching TFA for the third time. In case you haven’t guessed, I’m firmly in the ‘love it’ camp.
Upon multiple viewings, my girlfriend and I (she’s seen it twice) both got the impression that Han Solo and Kylo Ren might know who Rey is (or at least suspect who she is). That might also explain why Leia hugs Rey the first time they meet (although ignoring Chewie is still inforgiveable!).
As a side note, this time I saw it on a non-digital screen in a crappy old local cinema and it helped it feel a bit closer visually to the Original Trilogy. If you plan on seeing it multiple times I suggest mixing it up - So far I’ve seen it in IMAX 3D, digital 2D and non-digital crappy 2D. Each time was different (but all great).
I think the ultimate problem that keeps this movie from being enjoyable for me is that I don’t think Star Wars translates well into the 21st century. The visuals, other than recycled designs from the OT, just did not feel like Star Wars to me. Maybe it just all looked too polished or something. All of the aliens (again, other than the recycled designs and the old lady) just looked fat and ugly and lacked all charm of the original cantina scene. Star Wars and Empire just scream 1970s filmmaking, even though Empire came out in 1980 it was still filmed in 1979. That look of Star Wars and Empire just seems so real and quaint compared to this and I think that its budget and popularity have just made it too big for its own good. I’m not even sure if any of that makes sense as it’s 5:00 in the morning and I’m exhausted, so forgive if it sounds contrived.
I get what you’re saying, actually. But short of JJ shunning modern cameras and effects and only using outdated techniques from the 70s, what are you gonna do? I’d go see a 100% retro Star Wars VII with models and matte paintings but I don’t think modern audiences would accept that, which would mean the film would flop and episodes VIII and IX would never happen.
One thing I do think they could have done is stick to puppets instead of CG characters. That would have made it feel more like Star Wars, in my opinion.

I’m one of those idiots who saw TPM multiple times in the theater because I enjoyed it. I don’t know what I was thinking, and I hope that doesn’t happen again…
I remember sitting in the the cinema trying to convince myself I was enjoying it. I couldn’t fully accept that it was terrible. It was only when I bought the VHS that I fully realised it sucked. I’ve only seen Episodes 2 and 3 once each and have no desire to ever watch them again.
But the TPM trailer was decent 😃 Now I’ve seen TFA I’m interested to go back and watch the trailers that I initially avoided for fear of spoilers.

No. It’s probably from the 20 min. they cut.
EDIT: According to the novelization they seem to have cut quite a lot from that part of the film.
Is the novelisation worth a read? I’m curious about these missing bits.

It’s really hard to decide which is the worst Star Wars character in history now, Jar Jar or Phasma? At least Jar Jar was a genuine character, even if wildly inappropriate and hopelessly annoying. Even the Ewoks were cute and had their emotional little moments.
Phasma’s only purpose in the entire ******* film was to lower the shields for the resistance. That’s it. Just imagine an imperial officer whose only function was to lower the shields on Endor and say “you’re gonna regret this!”
I agree. She could have been so cool but they made her a useless patsy.
The cynical side of me believes she was only included in the marketing hype to highlight another female character.
I’d like to see her return in VIII, but if she does she’s been tainted with the lame brush. Any soldier/officer worth their salt would surely rather die defending the first order than let the base be destroyed.
And if she did indeed manage to get out of the trash compactor, and somehow escape the planet before it exploded, she should be renamed Captain Houdini.
It could be that they softened her character purposefully? Maybe seeing Finn defect affected her and she is heading down that same road and starting to question the First Order’s motives. That is why she put the shields down without much of a fight. Maybe we see her leave the First Order in the next film. Just an idea.
An interesting idea. Although if that’s the case I don’t feel like they developed her enough for me to care.

What are the thoughts on the crudely fashioned Rebel fighter doll we see at Rey’s house? Obviously she made it, but why? Is it possibly someone who brought her there and she’s trying to stay connected to them emotionally?
It reminded me of an episode of Doctor Who. A small girl meets the Doctor one evening and thinks he’s coming back for her. We meet her later in her life as an adult and in one scene inside her house you can see she had made a similar doll as a way to deal with the emotional distress of him having never returned.
For the record; I thought it was handled perfectly in Force Awakens. I don’t want a Lucastyle® explanation of every bit of minutiae. Much like Star Wars77, that’s where the fun of using your imagination comes in. I’m just curious as to what the board thinks.
I definitely noticed it and thought it was a lovely character-building touch. I just figured she’s into piloting and spaceships and dreams of action, much like Luke (who we saw playing with a toy shuttle while he gives threepio a bath).

For those of you aren’t familiar with it, ‘EMPIRE’ is a brilliant monthly movie magazine here in the UK. Their podcasts are excellent and this is well worth listening to if you have a spare hour and a half.

The real question is if they’ll actually call him Plageuis, or if he’ll just make some vague comment about having trained Palpatine.
Either way, I won’t really mind if it’s dealt with in the proper fashion.
I’m cool with a vague reference to having trained Palpatine (in fact, the idea of an ancient Sith lord, the grand-daddy of them all, is kinda cool), but anything that directly links the new trilogy to the prequels (eg. specifically calling him Darth Plaguis) will make me cry.
When can we pre-order? That’s right, my Star Wars DVD collection is about to double in size. 😉. Already have the soundtrack and the novelization. Alan Dean Foster. Awesome. Someone who wrote the sequel to Star Wars and has a firm understanding of The GFFA.

I’m not anti-CGI, but somehow it just doesn’t feel right in the Star Wars universe (for characters - ships are OK).
- While it’s a shame we didn’t get another scene with Han, Luke and Leia together, watching Carrie Fisher again, I don’t think she could handle a bigger role.
I thought it would have been awesome if somewhere in between ROTJ and TFA Leia had retrieved Luke’s lightsaber and it was her who gives it to Rey and tells her about the force (which would remove the need for Orange Yoda and the Mos Eisley Castle, and make Leia more important to the overall story). But then I remembered that Carrie Fisher is frazzled to the point of barely being able to string a complete sentence together on camera and figured Orange Yoda is probably for the best… although a puppet / human in a suit would have been better than CGI.
This thread was God damned ridiculous. I still can’t decide if hlf was actually a real person, although unfortunately it seems she was. I still hope it was just someone trying to be as over the top and stereotypical “dumb” girl as possible. One thing I know for sure: stinky needs to post more. Glad he still comes around once in a while. I’m still reading old threads as you can see.
