Crystall Skull has GL's fingerprints all over it

Earlier this week, IMDB had a reader review score of 9.0 for Crystal Skull. That's utterly insane -- higher than every great film ever made! It's already down to 8.1, and clearly after another month the review will more properly reflect the film's true quality.
WHy are people so dumb? If a film's crap it's crap, don't kid yourself. The same thing happened with ROTS - people convinced themselves it was a good film and George had finally pulled it off. But it wasn't a good film, it was shit. Not as shit as TPM and AOTC, but shit nonetheless.

I'm glad we have two threads to diss the new Indy film in because it deserves it.

I saw it tonight and it was fun to watch. I liked the nod to Raiders in the beginning, and I liked the way the film ended. The film felt sillier than the previous 3 and the plot was a bit murky, but it was still enjoyable. I liked seeing Marion again. It's no Raiders, that's for damn sure, but it didn't offend me like the prequels did.

But it had Aliens in it!!!

The only good portion of the film was from when Indy meets Mutt up to when they get captured outside the tomb where Indy finds the skull hidden behind the mummy. All that was pretty good. But it NOSEDIVED after that.

Yoda Is Your Father -

I didn't really make this clear in that post - in all honesty, I didn't like *any* of the Indy sequels. I LOVED Raiders, but the others were all just bad popcorn movies that had Harrison Ford in a hat with a whip and the name "Indiana Jones" on them. If I were completely objective, this would be my scale:

RAIDERS - A+
CRUSADE - D
KOTCS - D-
DOOM - F

But eventually (this is pre-KOTCS) I learned to judge the sequels by infinitely lowering my expectations. I'd watch 'Raiders' remembering how great it was, then I'd watch 'Doom' or 'Crusade' thinking before I put in the VHS tape, "Alright, this one sucked, but what the hell, it has a guy's heart getting ripped out," or "This one was awful, but Sean Connery was fun." I learned to like them in spite of themselves. That's the mindset I've had on all "Indy" sequels for the past ten years or so, and that was my mindset when I went into KOTCS. "This is gonna suck, but the bar's been pretty low since 1984 anyway." And I wasn't disappointed, because it lived up to those expectations.

So, even though I really consider 'Raiders' to really be THAT much better than any of the others, I give them the benefit of the doubt enough to like them, and give them grades of C+ or B-.

Was KOTCS good? No. But neither were TOD or TLC.

Fair enough... but this one had aliens in it!! ALIENS!!!

I just got back from watching IJATKOTCS and I think the guys who liked it must be smoking crack. You're all entitled to your opinions and I'm really glad you enjoyed it, but I wish I could erase it from my memory. Why oh why didn't I learn my lesson with the prequels?

I went into thios expecting a below-par, belated, watered down indy. I did not expect greatness, just a half-decent albeit unnecessary bookend. But what I saw was bloody awful - there were times when I thought 'hey, this is ok', 'that was a pretty cool Indy moment' but generally it was just so, so bad.

Best to least:

1. "Raiders" (A+)
2. "Last Crusade" (B-)
3. "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (B-)
4. "Temple of Doom" (C)

"Crusade" and "Kingdom" are vying very closely for the #2 spot. I might have to consider them tied, myself.
Are you kidding?!!!

The funny thing is Crystal Skull is the best of the summer blockbusters simply because it is Indiana Jones and stars Harrison Ford. it may be garbage in comparison to the originals, but is still worlds better than the hulk, iron man or any other hollywood dreck.

I'm afraid I'd have to disagree there. Iron Man gave me hope for the future of the film industry, that maybe movies would start getting better again, and then Indy 4 brought it back down. I can't help but wonder if I somehow saw a different movie from the rest of the posters in this thread, because I thought KOTCS was absolutely terrible.

Totally agree - loved Iron Man, hated this.

Nobody needs to 'take over'. If somebody wrote a film about a fifties motorbike kid who finds himself on an Indy style adventure I imagine it could be ok. But why does it have to be an Indiana Jones spin off? Why must eveything be franchised to within an inch of it's life? Alien is a case in point - great one-off sci-fi horror film. Then they made an action sequel which was very good. I even didn't mind Alien 3... then we got alien ressurection, AVP, etc etc... and now it's just a cheap joke.

I am... Iron Man!

Possible Spoilers ahead if you know nothing about Iron Man:

I've no idea where they will take this for the sequel... the possibilities are endless really. It could just be a straight 'Iron Man vs Random Bad Guys' story, or there's the alcoholism storyline but judging by the tone of the first film that might be a bit heavy. Same goes for the paralysis storyline. War Machine was hinted at, but that should wait till the 3rd film if at all. Iron Man's arch-nemesis is Mandarin but I can't really see that working on film... well, not this sort of film anyway... one thing I liked about this was it was very 'real'. I mean, obviously the technology to make the suit is waaaayyy beyond anything that exists, and Stark building a life-saving mini-generator in a cave while he's hooked up to a car battery (with no sign of infection) is not realistic, but you get what I mean - it was all real world stuff, not magical.

One last thing - I am not really a fan of CGI but the CGI in this movie was awesome. There were times (especially in the desert/afghanistan scenes) when Iron Man looked 100% real.

It seems to me that BSG has just lost it.
Shame...It was until the second half of season 3, the best show on tv...along with Lost...which is still the nuts!

Yeah, I'm not feeling Battlestar this Season. Lost is the nuts though - I'm only on episode 9 of season 4 but it has been quality (a few dodgy episodes but whatever).

We have some real dog shit comedy shows on here that seem to go on forever (My Family & My Hero for instance) that the BBc seem to love..as well as the old folk I guess.

Yeah, what a load of crap those shows are!

Tom Baker's demise effected me the most. It was so dramatic. And Tom was my favorite. I was horrified when he fell/died.

So... If Doctor Who fell into a really big hole and died... what would happen? He'd regenerate... but he'd be stuck down a hole. Does the Doctor need to eat/drink? Because if he does he'd be screwed because he'd die again and again until he ran out of regenerations... He'd also be really bored.

Damn. Heston was awesome. You know he's made some pretty bad movies in his day but I have to say I always loved them just because his personality was so amusing to watch. With him gone, its all up to Clint Eastwood to carry on as the symbol of universal manliness.

Shit... Clint will be off soon too... that will be a sad, sad day. Clint is the man. THE MAN.

To me, cinematography can't be "updated"... sure it can "look" like a 2000s movie, but that doesn't mean it's "improved" from previous generation's styles of lighting. I think if they kept it as close as possible to the older films (visually), it would be so much more "creative", really... because no one does that anymore; and to do that would be a very pleasant surprise. It would feel more "fresh"... don't you think?

I totally agree. I always said that if Lucas had strived to make the prequels match the OT in terms of cinematography and effects he would have been praised for making a 'retro' film. Tarantino mimcs older styles and gets praised, John Favreau used old school techniques to shoot Zathura and was praised, Michel Gondry used in-camera and stage effects for Eternal Sunshine and was praised, imagine if George had done that for Star Wars and imagine if they had done that for the new Indy movie - it would have been so cool, especially with the current 80s retro mania that seems to be in fashion right now. A missed opportunity if you ask me. George could still have used his beloved computers, but use them imaginitely to give a non-digital look. And with his money and creative team the puppets could have been awesome - just look at Pan's labyrinth.
