I Love George Lucas
Time
Bossk, I agree with everything you say, and I agree that both versions of the film should be made available to the public, and petitioning LFL is a good start, but is sitting around here cussing and bitching about the changes gonna help. If George Lucas was reading this site (which he, or at least someone at Lucasfilm may well be doing), we all come across as a bunch of moany geeks with nothing better to do than bitch. If I was George, I would say 'yeah, maybe these guys have a point, but fcuk 'em.

It is fun to vent about the changes, I admit, but don't you think some people are overeacting? You have to admit that when all the prequels are finished and watched along with the new versions of the OT as a 6 part saga, it will be a pretty sweet viewing experience, telling the story of Vader's rise and fall, and it will all slot in nicely. I used to be dead against it but I'm mellowing to the idea. It would be nice to get the unaltered OT out to the public though, yes.

OK, maybe I don't love him, but I think he's ok, and yeah, I grew up on the original trilogy and I love them, but I also don't mind the altered versions (except some dodgy CGI, but I can deal). Look, you've all got the originals, either on VHS, Laserdisc, or a rip, so just put up or shut up. It's a bit sad to be honest. I'm a geek, I admit, but you guys take the biscuit. I've been a member here for about a week, and I have slammed the new versions like the rest of you, but now I stop and think about it, who the hell cares? You guys are very passionate about this. Maybe Lucas is equally passionate about doing what he wants to do and moulding Star Wars into a 6 part saga that works. Da Vinci worked on the Mona Lisa for years, making hundreds of alterations - get over it.

Let the attacks begin.

Did anyone else find Ian McDiarmid to be ineffectual as the Emperor?
Time
So if vader was kicking dueling droid ass all that time, and we've seen that anakin was pretty nifty with a saber, luke, after a few days training on the falcon and a couple of weeks on dagobah should have been lightsaber fodder. We see the Jedis in the prequel somersaulting all over the place, and Anakin jumping out of 100 storey windows to chase assasins, but luke couldn't even dodge a blaster bolt to the hand on Jabba's sail barge.

Wanted: I'm looking for a PAL VCR...

Thanks for the PC advice, and good point about the DVD player/TV adaptability, although I believe mine is dual PAL and NTSC, at least that's what it says on the box (It's a Wharfdale DVD 750). It was one of the first reasonably priced (well, 200 pounds over 5 years ago) DVD players available in england many moons ago, and although it's ancient now, I've found no reason to replace it.

The young man version of Anakin, as played by Hayden Christensen, strikes me as being more of a whiny, sexually perverse cretin than an actual "badass", but hey, that's just me. Turning into Darth Vader actually seemed to be an improvement for him.

Yeah, true. But as a fighter he's badass. Vader was kinda crap with a lightsaber. Young Anakin woulda whipped Luke's ass.

Yeah, Dave Prowse is a nice guy, I met him too. He's more farmer than cockney Londoner though (I am a Londoner).

Anyway, You are all going to hate me for this, but I watched the Super duper special 2004 editions again over the weekend and I agree....

They're not so bad.

Yes, there are some crappy changes that we could do without
Yes, Jabba is still complete shit
Yes, they should have released a disc with all 3 versions, terminator 2 style (at any rate the originals should be available to the public)

But, at the end of the day, they're not so bad, and I never thought I'd say it, But give George a break.

DVD Packaging
Time
I've mentioned this in another thread, but it bothers me so much that I think it deserves it's own - Is anybody else shocked and annoyed by the crappy DVD cases for the DVD box set? I was expecting some kind of folding cardboard thingy like the Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition DVDs, but instead I found some bog standard plastic DVD cases with really badly photoshopped covers. There's so much great Star Wars art work out there, from the 70s and 80s, and not to mention the fantastic work of Drew Struzan - WHAT THE HELL IS THIS PACKAGING ALL ABOUT? It looks cheap and I could have made it using Microsoft Paint!

What if someone else had played Obi-Wan instead of Alec Guinness?
Time
Before anyone says anything, that was a joke. To be honest, I don't think the films would be much differnt without Sir Alec, although he did lend the film some credibility when it was first released. Him and Peter Cushing were the only names in the movie, which some people would have probably written off as a lamo sci-fi yarn without the presence of these ditinguished actors.

Does anybody know what the US outlets are fused at?

Rikter - try this website. Although you will have voltage problems like I've been discussing, their prices are good. Don't know if they mail internationally but we could sort something out:

They should have had Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Dave Prowse and Peter Mayhew wearing their respective suits and holding the heads, and it would have been cool to have Prowse, Christensen and Earl Jones all standing together. It's not cool that he didn't include those guys - Anthony Daniels has made a huge contribution to the series as opposed to Jake Llyod (he deserves to be there too though).

A New Hope.... pieces of work becomes copyright free
Time
I wouldn't have to use puppets, but I still would. I work in Computer Special effects so I like to think that I know what I am talking about . I even have friends in the industry who worked on episode 1. CG can stop a movie dead in it's tracks if used incorrectly. One of my friends was a programmer on Episode 1 (he was involved in creating Jar Jar's flowing ears). He told me that all the artists working on that film were saying things like 'what the hell is this? we're killing star wars' - but orders are orders so they done their job. My programmer friend left and now works in London.

Bossk, I agree with you about Ditching Jabba in ANH, but what about Max Rebo - don't you think that the original should be reinstated? It was much more ambient and suited to Jabba's sleezy hangout - not that pop crap that they sing now. Anyway, that is my pet peeve about the whole OT DVD - I agree with everyone about the changes, but Max Rebo and the band is the one that gets me the most - I know it's not important to the story or anything, and I shouldn't care so much, but it's just horrible. so, my top 3 OT changes would be:

1. Han shoots first (and only).

2. Jabba scene removed from ANH.

3. Original Max Rebo/Sy Snootles scene reinstated.

Any other takers? Top 3 changes for the prequels or OT - only 3....

A New Hope.... pieces of work becomes copyright free

There is still hope for the Star Wars Saga:

70 years after the death of the creator, a piece of work becomes copyright free. This is why any old shmuck can do shakespeare - nobody owns the rights. In today’s world of studio ownership and big bucks, I’m not sure if this still stands, but seeing as Lucas and Lucasfilm own everything to do with Star Wars, in theory, 70 years after Lucas’ death, someone could remake the prequels so they are actually good.

Of course, we’ll all be dead or very old by then, but let’s say that human life expectancy has doubled by the late 21st century due to medical advances - what would you do differently? Would you re-edit the prequels? remake them totally using only puppets and animatronics to tie them in with the OT? Leave them untouched? let’s say you could only make 3 changes? What would they be? Here’s mine:

1. Anakin and Obi Wan would be older in TPM
2. Obi Wan and Qui Gonn’s characters would be merged into just Obi Wan
3. No Gungans, which takes care of Jar Jar.

I would also use no CGI creatures (background and vehicles are okay) - Yoda’s death scene in Jedi was fantastic - the greatest Muppet of them all.

Wanted: I'm looking for a PAL VCR...
Time
Ok guys, you all seem to be pretty clued up on this stuff, so maybe you can help me some more - It looks like I'm gonna have to bring my VCR and maybe DVD player with me to America when I move. Here in England our electrical sockets put out 240v while I think in America it's 110 (?) which means I will need a step up convertor to boost that 110 in order to power my machine. I've done some quick research and you can actually buy said convertor from Radio Shack. What I want to know is, can you get multi socket convertors, so I can plug 4 British appliances in and have them all work? That would save me from having to buy multiple convertors and also means I could bring my PC without having to open it up to install a new power supply. Any help is greatly appreciated - I have a lot of cool and obscure PAL VHS and DVDs and I am bringing them with me, whatever it takes (have you seen how crappy the American Back to the future DVD set looks compared to the british one?)

Incidentally, I believe the difference between PAL and NTSC players is that in Europe our TVs display more lines of pixels, giving a clearer picture, or something like that...

Christopher Lee would make a crap emperor, and I don't even think he was good as Dooku - Cheesy and pretentious. McDiarmid is a good emperor, although after seeing what a badass Anakin was as a young man, he does seem to be the Emperor'sbitch in Jedi and it doesn't really fit. But that's the dark side for ya - and the emperor knows how to use it to control even Vader. As for the new version of ESB, I can live with the addition of McDiamid to that movie, although what was with his makeup? It looked like a rubber mask.

I saw the pcture in a British newspaper that said that the photo is actually digitally created and the actors didn't all get together in one studio. Typically Lucas, don't you think? I'm surprised they didn't superimpose Alec Guinness in there two. And doesn't Jake Llyod look pissed - 'I could have played Anakin in Episode 2 and 3...F*cking Hayden Christensen...'

Discussion: Your most prized star wars collectible
Time
I have an original 1977 Star Wars poster given to my dad by one of the choreography/stunt guys on the movie. He's the same dude who is driving the tank in Goldeneye while Pierce Brisnan sticks his head out and pretends he's driving it. Anyway, my Dad works in a hospital hear in London and got chatting to him while he was in for surgery and mentioned I was a big fan - nice one.

Also, my TIE inteceptor limited edition VHS box set of the original versions, digitally remastered for picture quality but no crappy CGI. Actually, I'd like to know the value of that (not that I would ever sell it). Does anybody have any idea??

I've also got a carded ROTJ Darth Vader figure from 1983 signed by Dave Prowse...But that guy will sign anything. Does he wear the suit in Episode 3? Bet he's pissed if they got someone else.
