Neverar's A New Hope Technicolor Recreation (Final Version Released!)

Thanks to you Neverar and another question : when you recruit color from another source, does it mean you combine luminance information from the BR and chrominance from the source ?

That’s it exactly. I usually replace 50-90% of the chroma with the improved source, sometimes just a few gradients or a small part of the frame, but sometimes the entire frame gets the chroma replaced. In the first 4 reels, I’ve probably replaced the entire color of just 5 or 6 shots, but reel 6 in particular has such horrible color problems that during the dogfight it’s used on probably 1/3 of the shots. It’s surprisingly effective, but it’s essential to make sure everything is registered throughout the shot or you get worse problems like color fringing.

What tools do you use for image registration? Or do you do it manually? I’ve tried Elastix, some ImageJ plugins, and Photoshop’s Auto align layers usually works pretty well.

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)

Despite several more attempts at it I wasn’t able to improve upon it, so that is the best version I have at the moment. I believe Darth Lucas and Yotsuya were also working on projects featuring the '81 Crawl, most notably this one:

Perhaps they had better luck?

Single Pass Regrade of Grindhouse ESB (Released)
Time

Yeah, sorry. While I could probably make the time to apply a LUT and hit render, as Dreammaster says, the result would only be about 1% better. I have been toying with the idea of applying Nevar’s Grindhouse LUT to it and rendering that out, but with Poita’s new scans I’m not even sure it’s worth the effort. Better versions of Empire are on the horizon.

Info Wanted: What Is The Best Theatrical Version of Each Star Wars Movie?

No, synced is a timing thing. All GOUT-synced audio will work with any GOUT-synced video, so people’s lips match up with the words coming out of their mouths, etc. Silver Screen isn’t GOUT-synced, so you are a little more limited in your audio options (or you add dark frames for the missing video to make it GOUT-synced, either way).

Just to clarify: Star Wars Silver Screen Edition v1.0 is not GOUT sync’d but v1.6 is.

Glad to hear. Do you know if filling in the gaps was accomplished with GOUT frames or black frames, or some other method?

All kinds of methods were used - occasionally frames were repeated, sometimes they were recreated from nothing using photoshop and other tools based on nearby frames, and in at least one case frames were taken from the blu-ray, color matched, blurred and grained with some dirt and dust added to make them blend better. No black frames were used, except between Reels 1 and 2 where it had faded to black anyway, and no GOUT frames were used either. I’m quite pleased with the results.

Are you using the TN1 ISO of Grindhouse ESB as a source or do you have access to something with less compression?

I’m using the 20 gig MKV file that I THINK is GOUT synced and has a single 5.1 audio track on it.

The ESB Grindhouse was not GOUT sync’d. I still have the prores version of the ESB Grindhouse somewhere, is there a way to create a LUT from your settings, or a way I can reproduce them to make a new Encode with your color tweaks?

Info Wanted: SW--A New Hope (status/use of original audio master tapes)
Time

I can tell you for sure that the 4K77 project does not have access to the master tapes or copies thereof.

Mike Verta hinted in one of his videos that he has access to them for Legacy, but for obvious reasons he couldn’t discuss where or how he got them, nor could he share them. But since he does work in Hollywood, in the film industry and did interview many of the people involved in making Star Wars, visited the Lucasfilm archives, etc. I don’t have any reason to doubt him.

how will this affect adywan’s edit?

This looks like someone who showed up a week late to the joke party. However, based on your post history, I’m guessing you are either clueless or a sock. The former is pretty likely but doesn’t really explain this particular post, so I’m leaning towards the latter.

Maybe, but it still made me laugh. (Though I don’t get out much and visit many of the other threads, so perhaps my forum life has been too sheltered to see the bigger picture here.)

I have registered as darthrush and cannot get the confirmation email at all. Iv tried the re-send and checked junk mail. I’d love to keep posted on such a promising project.

I have the same problem, no email received.

Email should start working better now, just realized I had never set up the SMTP server - it’s amazing any of you got the emails!

The Arbiter and darthrush, I just manually approved you, so you’re in.

Still looking for:

There are several users still awaiting approval that I cannot find profiles for here on OT. If you recall, I requested that you use the same username when signing up as you do on OT, that way I can confirm that you found your way to the site through this thread, you won’t have to think up and remember a new username, and there will be some continuity as the discussion continues.

Can anybody here lay claim to the following usernames? If not, they will be rejected.

Wow. We’re already at over 160 people asking for an invite to the private topic. The good news is that, inspired by suggestions to switch to Discord, I suddenly remembered what my day job is - I build websites! So last night I very quickly threw together a new private forum site, where nobody will be excluded for failing to post here in time, and where we can split the project up into several topics, so that all the people obsessed with the exact color of the Tantive walls can discuss it ad nauseum in a thread dedicated just to that topic, while the rest of us have the real fun reading about Turkey Sandwiches and the things that really matter.

Like the Legacy Site (which I also worked on), this one requires registration in order to see the Project forum. I’m still in the process of setting it all up, but if you want to head on over there and register, then we can start getting back to normal.

Please use the same username as you do here on OT.

To be fair, it’s easy to miss this post among all the “Me Too” requests…
