Where/How will you see TFA?
Time

I don’t really see why directors proudly exclaim that they’re shooting on film and then make a DI and project exclusively digitally. Really all there is to gain is natural grain (I could be a rapper…), but a good chunk of that is scrubbed away anyway. I just recently saw Spectre and it was almost devoid of grain. I mean, the trailer for TFA look like they were shot digitally.
So what is the actual reason for shooting on film if you’re not going to finish it on film or project it on film? What is there to gain?

Does anyone know of any 35mm showings like, anywhere? I haven’t heard anything.

Anyway, By brother and our wives are going to marathon the OUT on the 23rd and then going to a local Regal (blech) to see it in 2D. I also want to see it in IMAX in some form. Unfortunately there aren’t any 70mm showings super close to me, but I may work it out so I see it anyway. At the very least I will see it in lieMAX 3D at the same Regal.

Info Wanted: Best laserdisc transfer? 2006 GOUT or fan made? GOUT Upscale?
Time

Look for the OUT Rules transfer. apparently it’s incredible looking. Previously, someone had attempted a transfer using the best LD player ever released (Pioneer X0), but I believe some deaths ended that one. Any GOUT upscale will have more detail regardless. It came straight from the master tapes, and being on DVD, generally has more detail than is possible with Laserdisc. My preferred upscale is the DJ GOUT V3, but he also worked as a part of Team Blu and they did another fantastic upscale of Star Wars (77/97) alone.

Info: Back to the Future - without DNR & EE

Help me out here, I honestly have trouble seeing what’s wrong with the picture. Could someone point an example out to me or something?

You and me both. Yeah, I can see the DNR and EE, but it really doesn’t look waxy or destroy the look of the film for me. Obviously the older issues like improper framing or pink yellows are an issue, but this does not look that bad to me.

He means the theatrical versions of porn, obviously.

And don’t gimme any of those teal and orange, DNR jobs on bluray!

I don’t know what a DNR job is, but it sounds disgusting.

Cannot Deal with Blu-rays
Time

Those are bootlegs that are just captures of the special edition laserdisc. Save your money. Look into finding the TB 97 trilogy. They are captures of PAL broadcast tapes (I believe) that were used to show the fipms on TV in Europe. The quality is not the best, but it’s the best available for the 97 trilogy at the moment. Team Blu also did a great upscale of ANH using this capture, and it looks significantly better.

How will you be watching the saga in preparation for Force Awakens?
Time

OT only, in a single day.

  1. SW- DED 2.5
Really the best that’s available. No contest until we get a full 35mm scan.
  2. ESB- Renegade Grindhouse
HD, and no chance of a SE change slipping in.
  3. ROTJ- Dark jedi GOUT V3
Best thing there is until we get a new DED or 35mm scan.

I’ll be watching with my wife, my brother and his wife, my brother in law, and maybe a couple other people.

Okay, so I watched the 35mm version from the Spleen, and a guy there gave this link to another LPP: http://www.angelfire.com/or/raylearchive/#35

When I see this : http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/329851Trinity1.jpg
Then this other LPP : http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/545850Trinity2.jpg
And finally the Blu-ray : http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/292306Trinity3.jpg

I feel compelled to aknowledge that the Blu-ray, at least for this shot, looks quite right compared to the other LPP.

And just so you have it, here’s the '99 DVD: http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/307400m99.jpg The DVD was said to have more green than the Laserdisc, and we can see it has less than the BD and that second print, but looks no where near the same as the scratched print.
