Eh, don’t feel bad. I’ve only seen ROTS and TPM 3D in theaters.
(And TFA if you count it).
Why wouldn’t you?

Harmy will be able to make any improvements to the distant sand crawler scene in 3.0? the one seen here in Mike’s restoration: https://vimeo.com/channels/starwarslegacy/119620458 , this scene is the only one that stood out to me in despecialized.
Yeah, probably. I don’t see why he wouldn’t, what with the Silver Screen Edition available. I’d be surprised if any SD footage remains by the time he gets to 3.0.
Incredible how ‘right’ this looks!
https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/vwsrizfkea02nqqgzjxy.jpgI stumbled across this image in some article and it shows nicely how much more real the '97 CGI looks with some generational loss and 35mm colors. I think if TN1 do a 35mm transfer of the '97SE, like they said they eventually would, it could be a great resource for anyone wanting to do any kind of semi-specialized edition.
I agree- this actually matches the aesthetic of the original effects, something that the home video releases are sorely lacking. Harmy, could you post the article this is from?

Well he could simply get some other people to write and direct and just take the profit while sipping beer on the beach. Obviously there was some personal reason that he invested his time in it.
I think an overwhelming factor was toy sales and marketing. I mean, just look at the insane marketing campaign for TPM- one that was only matched recently by the ludicrous TFA campaign. He stated in the Leonard Maltin interviews in 95 that he was planning on only directing Episode I, then handing off II and III to new directors. I think this was still the plan up until the release of TPM, but due to its poor reception, he didn’t want anyone else to make a Star Wars movie that was significantly better than how own. Mind you, this is only speculation, but I think it’s both ego and profits involved, more than a want to tell great stories.

Harmy used a Technicolor as reference.
We have access to reference scans, which were the same as the Senator print.
We will be using those as a reference for our own restoration.
Lucasfilm borrowed the print, but didn’t use it, as they had other sources.
Team Negative1
Who did they borrow it from and for what?

These aren’t convincing me.

Well, maybe a digital version, since this is an all-digital restoration.
This is all very confusing.

Well it seems to be working.
Here’s my list, in terms of favorites:
This will probably change once I get more time to sit down and watch TFA when it comes out on Blu Ray. And I know it’s weird to have Jedi above Star Wars, but the sheer amount of stupid fun in that movie makes it far more enjoyable in my opinion. Which is also why I put Phantom Menace above Revenge of the Sith- I just have more fun (and nostalgia) associated with it. ROTS is just kind of boring to me.
Now here’s a different list, in terms of objective (as much as I can be) quality of each film:
I’m interested! BTW, it’s for a customized SUP file for use with the 2006 GOUT DVDs, to restore the original font as faithfully as possible. Has something like this already been done?
Look for Dark Jedi GOUT V3.
The issue with those shots are that they’re inconsistent. I’ll use the sand crawler as an example. Yes the still that the sandcrawler is rotoscoped onto is higher quality than the -1 shot, but it’s kind of distractingly obvious where the seam is. The -1 shot has the advantage of having consistent quality across the shot without being a dramatic drop in quality from the surrounding shots. I haven’t yet tried dropping the shot in, but that’s just my thinking behind it.
This is what I was thinking with these shots. I realize that portions of Harmy’s shots are of higher quality, but the overall consistency and quality of the 35mm is much less jarring.
I definitely agree with you guys on this. It’s just a matter of how jarring it is to have shift the quality of the whole frame in one shot vs. having elements in the shot that are lower quality. Case by case basis, I’m sure.
There’s also the matter of getting the grain profiles to match a bit better.
Well the sand crawler shot is brief enough that I don’t think the extra grain would be too distracting, and might actually add to the feel. Same with the static cantina shot. The detention block extension is another beast entirely. I could live with it as it I suppose.
Has Mike given us his impressions of the Silver Screen edition?
We probably won’t be hearing from him for another month or so, he’s busy with work at the moment.

You should probably read the forum rules.
Frink, you should be a moderator. Frink 2016.
The way I see it, there are two versions of Star Wars worth preserving for history’s sake: the '77/'80/'83 and the '97 editions, the only two that saw their premiers on the big screen. As far as I am concerned, the '04 DVD and '11 Blu-Ray cuts are insignificant from a preservation point of view.
If new Lucasfilm lead by Disney wanted to put out their own edition based on the '04/'11 as some kind of “Definitive Edition,” like the Bladerunner “Final Cut,” why not? It would be better than anything we’ve had since the original releases (they would be bone-headed, for instance, to keep Greedo shooting or Vader’s Noooooo!). If they’re doing a new 4k transfer for such purposes, however, there is no excuse not to release the theatrical version alongside, and from a business perspective, it would be quite stupid to pass up the opportunity for an expensive boxset that would fly off the shelves.
I don’t think they (morally) have the right to tinker with the trilogy. I think that the 2011 should be the final Special Edition, as these were the last ones that George worked on, and are essentially his definitive version. I don’t think we’ll ever see an official release of the 97/04 cuts again, and I doubt we’ll get a new master for the 2011. I think they’ll do a 4K restoration of the OUT and release it in a pack with left over 2011 discs.
I like the Harmy quote 😃
Part of me wonders if there’s 35s out there of the Greedo scene without hardsubs. </random>
I seriously doubt it. I can’t think of any reason why they would ever leave it out.
Also, if anyone needs an invite to myspleen, send me a PM, I have 10 invites apparently.
I do as well. Be gentle.
I would not consider inserting quick shots from TN1 for the sake of color.
I will not purely for the sake of color unless the color is unsalvagable in Harmy’s version and there is no other source. I have yet to come across a shot like this but who knows.
I will, however insert quick shots for the sake of quality and resolution, most notable during the battle of Yavin sequence where most of the space shots in TN1’s are very clean and where the jump in quality between blu Ray and gout upscales are most noticeable in Harmy’s imo. I will only do this if the shot has little to no noticeable damage on TN1’s and if the increased resolution and clarity is noticeable and improves the experience. And of course it will be color corrected to match.
I would recommend some of the more noticeable shots than the battle. Most of those are honestly great, despite being GOUT upscales. I think what needs it the most would be the sand crawler coming over the dune, the exterior shot of the cantina, and the detention block extension.
I don’t think he’s going for the look of the negative in terms of color, that would make no sense - the negative doesn’t have any color-grading done.
I think he’s going for day one print accuracy, based off of Tech prints and actual props and costumes.
Why have a veil of mystery? If you have access to prints then just say what you think the footage is original or SE. I think I might have misunderstood earlier. Are you referring to comparing your prints with what was seen in their demo reel, or new footage from RMW’s project?
Sounds like they are specifically talking about the RMW footage.
I saw the IMAX 3D showing, and there was absolutely no benefit there. I’m sure it would have been awesome on a dome, but the difference in aspect ratio is minute when seen in digital.
These are the best i found online. If you got better ones, throw them here, everyone including myself would cheer.
The better ones are the ones with text, those or just ugly and unusable.
Nice constructive criticism.
The 1997 SE on Laserdisc, back in September. I’m not much one for the merchandise, but I like to have the best legitimate copy of each version of the films.
