Quick question: Are the wipes going to be the theatrical ones in the 3.0 trilogy?
Quick question: Are the wipes going to be the theatrical ones in the 3.0 trilogy?
My idea is to work on all 3 v3.0s though and release them all at once but we’ll see how that works out.
I’m all for this. This should give you a chance to have more time on each one. I would recommend you do workprints, though, as a way for the community to help with QC like the 2.0 WP.
All future updates will be posted here : http://thestarwarstrilogy.com/starwars/post/2016/01/27/Team-Negative1-Updates
and on Facebook.
Team Negative1
Are you leaving the forum?
I hope not. They posted almost exclusively on AMPS for a while and that’s when I lost track of progress on this project. They did eventually start posting here again, so hopefully they will come back again.
As of right now I don’t plan on tracking down the Definitive Collection or the THX (Faces) Editions because it seems redundant. I already own the 2-Disc DVD Editions of The Star Wars Trilogy from September of 2006 and the Letterboxed DVDs of the Original Versions included in those sets were sourced from the same Video Masters used for those specific LaserDisc Editions.
There is merit in having both the DC or Faces and the GOUT. The GOUT has much better video quality, but the LDs have much better audio quality.
Here’s my regrade of one of the difficult lobster shots:

Here’s the LUT for this shot, for those who are interested:

You got some artifacting on the lobster’s arm there.
Although I exclusively refer to it as Star Wars today, I only ever remember calling it A New Hope up until I joined this site in late 2013. I never remember my dad calling it Star Wars, and my brother still calls it A New Hope, since the only version he and his wife own are the letterboxed Faces tapes that I gave them. His wife is lucky enough to have never even seen the Special Edition, eliciting quite the scowl when I showed her some of the changes.
Just do whatever minimizes Jedi Rocks as much as humanly possible.
It would be interesting to see the actual figures for Avatar and Titanic on solely their initial release without any subsequent re-releases/ versions
You should be able to on Box Office Mojo.
I’ve finally had time to sit down and watch significant chunks of this release rather than just a few quick sample scenes. In general I like it. I’ve commercial transfers (usually of older movies where the original negative is long gone) that aren’t as good-looking. That said, I have some issues with the audio: first, the intro logo and clicky projector noise at the beginning is WAY too loud. It overpowers the audio of the original. Second, the actual audio is a bit muffled sounding. Does this have to do with the low bitrate of the AC3 track or is there more going on? Finally, will a 5.1 track based on the 70mm surrounds be included in a future release? That would be sweet.
The audio is the compressed audio from the 2006 DVD. The official Team Negative 1 release will use 35mm stereo, which should sound much better. Anything aside from mono English/Spanish tracks are left up to everyone else on OT that wants to do it themselves.
Damn it has slowed down a lot. I bet it will reach 2 billion this week but is Titanic too far to reach…?
At this points, quite possibly. I’ve been rooting for it to pass it, but unless something happens within the next month or so, I doubt it. I’m just happy it passed Jurassic World.
How are you not blind?
Theoretically speaking, if there was a 70mm print out there.
We would use 4k to preserve it, but still downscale it to work on it
Team Negative1
Well… not that it matters; it’s 1,000,000 to 1 we’ll ever get our hands on such a print anyway.
That’s what people were saying 5 years ago about the Technicolor prints.
Were there pictures up there somewhere? I didn’t see any.
If we go by the poster, its title was Star The Force Awakens Wars.
Just like Star Dark Forces Wars.
We have now started plans for the screening. It will probably in May in a theater
that holds 500 people. We are finalizing some plans for it, and will have details
as they are finalized.Team Negative1
Finally you can finalize those plans and provide finalized details when they’re finalized!
Is there a mockup of the 70mm ending of ESB? I’ve always heard there was a shot of the fleet missing, but I was never sure which shot.
There’s an in-theater recording of the 70mm mix. You could probably listen to the ending and guess.
What differences are in the mono mix for ESB?
I gotta agree that ROTJ has by far the worst changes. To make the SE of the original at least watchable all you really gotta do is splice out a few frames to make Han shoot first. Yeah, the Mos Eisley stuff and CGI Jabba is pretty bad, but they pale in comparison to “Jedi Rocks.” And Empire isn’t really harmed at all by the changes. I certainly don’t think any of them help or were at all necessary (the original is a perfect film as it is), but the worst is changing the line “Bring my shuttle.” Hardly Earth shattering. For the most part the changes were neutral. Had no positive or negative impact on the film. If only those types of changes were made to the other two as well, I wouldn’t complain too much.
The SE of Jedi, on the other hand, is totally unwatchable. “Jedi Rocks” is one of the worst things I have ever seen, without exaggeration. Absolute cringe. I have no idea what Lucas was smoking, but I hope I never inhale any of it. The Little Sarlaac of Horrors is terrible too, and don’t even get me started on the “Noooooooo” and Hayden Christensen with his creepy ghost smirk. What little was left of Vader’s dignity from the prequels was robbed by those changes.
Luke saying “You’re lucky you got outta there” rather than “You’re lucky you don’t taste very good”, Boba Fett’s Jango voice over, and the new Emperor footage and dialogue, are other showstoppers in Empire… Not to mention the out-of-place CGI background distractions in Cloud City.
The new Emporer dialogue absolutely ruins it for me. I consider the 97 SE to be damn near perfection- The only things holding it back (besides outdated CGI) are Luke’s scream and “PREPARE MY STAR DESTROYER FOR MY ARRIVAL.”
005’s galleries show:
Star Wars: 381 changes
Empire: 347 changes
Jedi: 186 changes
That may go up when you include audio changes.
I thought the official name was indeed “Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens”, only it was marketed with a shorter title.
No, its official name is SW:TFA but the on-screen title is Episode VII.
About 3 years ago I experimented with producing a median average of the 4 different DVB releases of the 97SE of Star Wars. It had been suggested at the time that the smearing in these releases was the result of the capture cards/equipment used, rather than DVNR in the broadcast master.
I seem to recall the averaging did improve the picture, just not very much. 😦
Not very much is better than none!
BECAUSE ITS GARBAGE NOT A MOVIE JEEZ TYPICAL OF SOMEONE WHO THINKS ESB IS BETTER THAN ROTS
Best post 2k16 10/10 made me laugh.
Looking at that latest preview…
“Impressive. Most impressive.”
Maybe a despecialization would be irrelevant if we had the whole film like that.
Only to a degree. There’s still more information in some shots on the Blu Ray due to it being sourced from the negative.

Eh, don’t feel bad. I’ve only seen ROTS and TPM 3D in theaters.
(And TFA if you count it).
Why wouldn’t you?
Harmy will be able to make any improvements to the distant sand crawler scene in 3.0? the one seen here in Mike’s restoration: https://vimeo.com/channels/starwarslegacy/119620458 , this scene is the only one that stood out to me in despecialized.
Yeah, probably. I don’t see why he wouldn’t, what with the Silver Screen Edition available. I’d be surprised if any SD footage remains by the time he gets to 3.0.
