Hell, throw in more Jar-Jar and make previously disappearing ships last well into the next scene, even if it is a forest or underwater or somewhere you wouldn’t expect to see a spacecraft. Felt there was never enough TIE fighter involvement in the speeder bike chase, and George would probably agree.
Could you also some matte lines around Jabba, put clothes on Princess Leia, and end the film right before the speeder bike chase?
The 70mm picture quality could potentially be quite nice, though with an aspect ratio of 2.2:1, some image would be missing from the sides.
The soundtrack is quite the most desirable aspect of it, of course. I know there is at least one privately owned 70mm print of the first movie out there, but nobody seems to know who actually owns it. Most likely this person would be unwilling to loan it out for scanning. I’ve never heard anything about whether there are any existing copies of the other two.
Re 70mm, I have seen two 70mm Star Wars prints, only one was in projectable shape and both were far too faded to red to be useful for restoration of the image, it is extremely likely that they all are far too faded now.
Plus 70mm is cropped at the sides, so I don’t think it will be a lot of use for the visual restoration.Any 70 prints would be Eastman likely and virtually all from that vintage are typically in tatters or so faded they are unprojectable. Additionally the mag tracks can go if not properly stored.
Imagewise, the only benefits would be the finer grain and what if any visual changes were induced through the blowup–albeit those you could tell through heavy fading. The big draw will be the Dolby 70 baby boom in the six track mag stripe. If it could be found, transferred and turned it would become a most powerful ally. 😉
But of course all this would be much easier if we could access the source and do a straight transfer, much like some 70mm mixes that got direct transfers to LD and DVD. Like the earlier Criterion 2001, any magnetic we might be able to work with would likely have some distortion or damage after all these years.The IB will be the best image overall and the most filmic/organic feeling. The Eastman/LPP will be what you’d have seen in 1977 and what the movie should look like from the processes of the day on general release.

So I work at a church that meets in a 1800 seat performance theatre here in Vancouver, Canada. Having access to a MASSIVE screen, a HD projector, and a Dolby Surround has it’s benefits… Screening SW Despecialized here with a few buddies tonight.

When people request an invite, I go to their profile to see when their account was created and how much they’ve posted.
If they created the account that day and all they’ve posted is that one post asking for an invite, nope, sorry.
The way I see it, the people who deserve invites are the ones who have stuck around here and contributed to some degree to the conversations.
I do it based on how polite they are. I only posted like once before I got an invite and I’ve stuck around.
So are these still only going up on Myspleen? I managed to find the older despecialized editions on another site but I am doubtful I’ll have the same luck with rotj 2.5. Since Myspleen seems to not be doing invites anymore, anyone have any advice for someone who wants to get this but doesn’t already have an account? Seems like the game has changed and it’s a lot harder for new people now 😦

Yes, prints tend to have more contrast, than the interpostive on which they are made. Blurays releases are usually based on a scan of the negative or an interpositive if they want to keep the original color timing. Prints get more contrasty with each generation, which can be seen on 16 mm prints, that are usually based on scanning a 35 mm print. The result is more black crush, and blowout.

The Jedi Purge has some of the greatest music ever written period, but falls short because we haven’t seen enough of these characters to care about their deaths, similar to The Force Awakens when the Republic planet is destroyed, but that benefitted from Hux’s epic speech.
That speech was great, but I cared less about the Republic than the Jedi in ROTS, TBH. It just kind of came out of nowhere and didn’t feel like the stakes were that large.
Best here meaning “embodies Trek values the most”.

This thread is my masterpiece. And yes, the effects in The Matrix, apart from some environments, are pretty awful, even the bullet time looks pretty strange now. But the film itself holds up very well. The Pirates and LOTR movies still hold up extremely well though.
I think the effects work well in context. They don’t really bother me. It kind of adds to the cyber punk aesthetic to have somewhat low-quality CGI for me.
- Stupid battle droid humor and voices.
- Palpatine cheering during the Dooku duel.
Oh yeah those were real bad. I was not quite as young as you but still in my youth, and I didn’t get why there were so many attempts at childish and slapstick humour in the film that was supposed to see the demise of the jedi and the fall of Anakin Skywaltzer
“Skywaltzer” ha I’ll have to remember that one. Yeah the humor was poor and stood out to me in large part because the droids were so much different in ROTS than in the previous two films. Weird that not only was there droid slapstick in the dark ROTS but it was only in that and not TPM and AOTC.

This was important to me though because I am not capable of comprehending the fact that people age over time. If he hadn’t have turned into a wrinkly old man in ROTS I would’ve sat there perplexed staring at the screen thinking, “why does he look older in Return of the Jedi than in this movie?”
I had always assumed as a kid that the Emperor was just super old in ROTJ. Palpatine’s appearance in AOTC looks like it’s actually working towards Emperor. Then he de-ages in ROTS? I could buy Palpatine turning wrinkly face as if it was his true visage but the film makes it sort of unclear why and implies that the force lightning use caused it. Anyway the big issue is that the make up doesn’t match AT ALL.
I assumed it was a trick. He was showing Anakin his true self in a way that made him look like he was being harmed by the lightning. I do absolutely hate the make up, however. It looks absolutely nothing like it did in ROTJ.

Yes. Yes it is. But it’s not mind numbingly or uncomfortably bad. It’s just plain bad with little to no redeeming qualities. I haven’t seen Nemesis since 2003, so all I remember from that is Hardy’s (spoiler) death. The Motion Picture, on the underhand, is vastly underrated and one of my favorite Trek films.

I have a funny feeling that you’re not going to believe me, but I saw it in theaters with my old man who LOVES the OT, and he absolutely hated it.
That’s not too surprising. The film isn’t really anything like the OT.
The mood of the crowd leaving the theater was decidedly deflated as well.

Shot of the Star Destroyers is nice though.
That’s because they’re flat textures and lack color. That sort of thing is always more believable.
And when I mentioned previously how well-liked TFA is, that wasn’t specific to OT.com. That was about the general public. I don’t think I’ve talked to anyone in reality that has disliked the film, and most people here seemed to enjoy it. That IMDB page also backs to up. Sure, ‘great’ may be pushing it a little, so I will give you that.

Got to this part after I typed out my rebuttal, so I will give you that.
I certainly agree that Yub Nub sucks and is very anti climactic, and there are some very good scenes in the prequels.
I simply cannot stand theatrical version of ROTJ because of Yub Nub… especially when VC is so much better.
I disagree that Yub Nub is anti climatic, as it sets up TFA much better than the celebration ending. Yub Nub feels like the small victory that it really was, rather than a galaxy-wide celebration where the war is all of a sudden over because the emperor has been killed. That being said, VC is a much better piece of music, bar none.
