I hope someone will be able to pick up the torch, and do (as they said they intended) with the 97s as was done with the OTVs - I think there’s opportunity with HD scans of the 97s alongside the OTVs and the 2004 HDTV rips, with the BDs.

I do believe at one point there “was” some brief discussion that the 97 SE’s would be tackled at some point I just can’t find the post to pinpoint the exact wording. It should be on a to-do list considering the poor home video treatment I agree it got. And, we have cinema DTS for the SE’s which would really be a great way, to preserve this Anniversary release in top form.

😃

There was definitely more than talk. They posted a frame in Dr Dre’s color correction tool thread that they claimed to be from the 97.

Though it should be pointed out that the wide release seen by the vast majority of people in 1980 was not the 70mm version. It was kind of a stutter step of a release, but it does exist.

I still want to see it some day, especially since it’s so unknown. It’s also the first Star Wars to be altered visually after release, so it’s an important milestone in George’s madness. Surprisingly it was mentioned in the 2004 commentary track.

I usually wouldn’t care about SE’s, but the way you put it, with the fan-OTV’s, HDTV rips and, of course, the BDs, you’re right that the 97SEs actually are the only hold outs of Star Wars versions to be available to fans in decent quality. For this small last step toward having all revisions available for people to choose from, I agree with you.

That and Empire 70mm.

Is that different from regular Empire?

Surprisingly, yeah. It was the first cut released, and right after they completed it and sent it off, George decided to mess with it some more. It has some minor differences in soundtrack as well as lacking a few shots at the end of the film.

What an absolute mess. I really hope someone can get a hold of all ‘statements’/posts/emails and properly sorts fact from fiction. No one wants projects that will hurt other projects, yet jumping to conclusion after conclusion as more information slowly trickles out isn’t healthy either. The longer this goes on, the longer reputations will suffer.

Hear fucking hear.

…Whatever happened to Poita and his scan of SOTS? I don’t have a spleen account so no way to check if it could have been thrown up there…

I’ve had to contend with my 2 copies I found on the net that look very very nice. One is a 2.49 gig mkv at 1280/720 with a 64kbps stereo audio. The other is a 4.25 gig mkv at 720/480 with a 255kbps stereo audio. The picture quality on both look identical, with very sharp picture and what appears to be some major cleanup (altho some artifacts and dust/dirt are still observable) …dunno if any of you people here are responsible for these copies…

Edit: checked on IPT…nothing.

He may have lost it. He also doesn’t distribute himself, he provides his scans to others to work on. Sometimes.

Harmy's Despecialized Star Wars 1977 - Color Adjustment Project for v2.7 (released)

I was actually thinking replacing the entire crawler shot. It’s just so jarring as it is that grain and damage would be less distracting to me.
And I’m really just nit picking with the set extension. I did, however, just remember the static exterior shot of the cantina that is significantly lower quality than the footage on either side of it. Plus there’s no wipes.

Though I’ve already rendered it, I could delay it if there’s something that ends up making a big enough difference. What are your suggestions?

I’ve tried a few others during that final battle (the main sequence using GOUT in 2.5), and found that Harmy has them worked nicer than I can do.

The only two that really stand out to me are the sand crawler coming over the dune and the detention block extension. If I had to pick between the two, though, it would be the crawler. But if you’re already rendering, don’t delay it on my account. I probably won’t have a chance to watch for at least another week anyway. I will be happy with whatever you put out.

I did also include many of the explosions in that battle from TN1’s SSE. I think they match better with the surrounding footage as I’ve graded it, and I previously avoided touching the explosions because other colors would get messed up. Every single frame has so many things going on. And I used their ion torpedo closeup.

Your coloring and the high definition footage make the compositing less obvious. Nice work.

Thanks. But I was actually unclear. Most of those explosion shots are basically untouched from TN1. But the resulting shot works better with some of the less green grading I have going. Much of the sequence looks pretty nice as they have it.

Either way, your next release will probably be my go to for a while. Are you going to replace any other GOUT footage? There are some shots that really stand out to me.

I would however, not hold my breath for the technicolor project, without getting into detail.

That doesn’t really surprise me, after what’s happened.

I had a good feeling that it was related to the Tech print. They most likely just didn’t have permission of the “owner” to scan it.

EDIT: Or they just decided that the environment of OT.com just wasn’t right for me.
