I think 4k displays are a great thing. I think 4k (or higher) preservations of of titles is awesome. I think 4k home media is largely a waste. For most titles, DVD is still good. For high detail films, Blu-ray is pretty much all you need. Going higher produces diminishing returns and it won’t help most titles. Most titles aren’t 4k ready. I believe that 4k maxes out what 35mm film can capture. Higher is good for things shot on larger film stock, but those aren’t as common. I don’t think the average person is going to be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 4k. I think the extra display pixels will do more for the content than increasing the resolution of the content.

I know there are many people out there who will have a setup that enables them to really tell the difference, but they are a minority (though I’m not so sure that this site doesn’t lean the other way). 4k is more suited to 3D and gaming than motion pictures.

Just as a counter, I find DVD to be a last-ditch when (a) a Blu-Ray is not available and I really want to see a movie or (b) the Blu-Ray is of worse quality than the DVD.

Used DVDs are cheap as dirt. Thus, I have ten times as many DVDs as BDs.

You’re correct about the 4k - it was only a 1080p scan. (Must’ve been thinking the Reliance scan) The 97SE was digitally mastered at 2k though.

No, the only shots that were mastered digitally for the 97 were the shots with CG in them. It was assembled as a traditional negative, though, as DIs weren’t very widespread at the time.

Aren’t channel misalignments a product of the Technicolor IB print, not the photography, though? So fixing that shouldn’t be at all controversial. Though I must say I’m not offended by fixing flickering etc. that may have been a product of the original photography.

I believe he mentioned the models were misaligned differently than the background plate, so in that case ut would be on the negative.

We can call it whatever we want. I call it an empty spot on my movie shelf that needs to be filled asap.

I’ll go with this.

+1 But I compeletly respect what Mikes plan is and understand why the distribution of this won’t be like Depseiclaized.

And I still have no idea why anyone cares about it. If no one will ever see it then who cares what he does? #movealong

Because now it has been restored and a new negative has been struck. We don’t have to worry as much about the state of the original negative and decaying elements.

Thanks. I suppose we don’t know yet whether yours or digitalfreaknyc’s is higher quality?

I’ve got a couple of screenshots a page back. It looks pretty good but maybe a little smeary in motion. I’ll wait to see how his compares before I try to figure out how to get it to you.

So you want me to send screenshots matching the ones already posted?

Either post them here or send them to towne32. I can post more tonight if there’s anything specific you wants to see. I just wanted walkie talkies and CG ET to be obvious.

I could probably work on that if no one else wants to do the assembling. I’ve got the blu-ray (which includes the weird deleted scene) and would just need the HDTV source.

What is the source of the DTS track you’ve mentioned (20th version I assume?). Is it muxed with video that can be used as reference for editing? I don’t know anything about the ET audio. Edit: Oh, it’s from the DVD? Well, I would need that muxed to the video. Even if it’s a low res sample, but just to make sure it syncs.

I can send you the one that I found when I get home. Send me a PM if you’re interested.
