If you have the hard drive space, get the MKV.
I don’t understand the US’ overinflation of these discs and why people pay those prices.
You can get them in my country and the UK for a couple of dollars each if you take three seconds to search for yourself; eBay may be simpler, but sometimes it just isn’t worth it.It’s just an Ebay thing.
No, it’s also an Amazon thing.
You can usually find a better price for them on Amazon.
You’re under no obligation to send me one. I just want to see this preserved or used to despecialize the Blu Ray. I care more about the importance of the project than any sort of benefit I may get out of it.

It is somewhat relevant here too, since the actor is saying he’s like to see the original versions.
I can.
Now get to work.
Thanks, dad.
As it’s a different, earlier shot, technically no.
I know it’s a different shot, but isn’t it the same model, only farther away?
It is, but it’s even less believable than the other one.

A big thanks to everyone that has helped with these so far, and if anyone wants to suggest a name for the projects, please do so!
I think it would be fine just as “Original Trilogy 35MM Restoration”. Maybe add “by Poita”. It doesn’t need to be flashy, just descriptive.
Mike states many times in the Vimeo videos the final coloring, etc won’t be complete until the entire restoration is complete. We haven’t seen the finished product yet.
However, he also makes it clear no one has seen this quality a version outside of the folks who made the movie. The final version likely will look a bit “new” to all of us.
His son has seen the finished product. He’s probably the only kid his age in the world to have seen the original version of Star Wars in a theater.
Nah, all my kids have seen Star Wars from prints in the cinema a few times, and most of their friends came with them.
Can someone just adopt me already?

To be fair though, the DVD was pretty damn great for the time as far as special features and video quality goes. It does suffer from horrendous EE, but most DVDs at the time did.
Big fan of Jedi Rocks, I see.
Nah, not a fan of it at all. It is just that the original scene is about as embarrassing as the new one. So I don’t care which one I have to endure.
I disagree in this case. Yeah, Lapti Nek is cheesy, but in a sleazy 80’s way that’s easy to forgive, and fits in well with the atmosphere of Jabba’s palace. Jedi Rocks is cheesy in an uncomfortable 90’s way. I feel embarrassed every time I see it.
So are you saying…don’t embarrass yourself?
Yes. I only pull it out to make others uncomfortable.
Please feel free to use that out of context.
Are there any screenshot comparisons between the GOUT and 35mm? Just curious to see the upgrade.
Only in the shots that are 100% GOUT (because the 2.5 shot resembles that, though it’s obviously further processed). Admittedly, it’s a bit hard to tell the difference in some for a single scaled down screenshot, but it’s more noticeable in motion. Darth Lucas’s saber element upgrade from GOUT is immediately clear even with the screenshot.
Though in motion there is a weird effect around the saber, basically there’s like a little event horizon between the two film elements if you look closely around the saber, hehe. This is one thing I hope will be done a little better in v3.0 and even more so rectified officially by Disney/Lucasfilm someday.
It’s much better than in 2.5. It blends in much better than the GOUT footage.

It’s just an Ebay thing. If you find them individually or in a used DVD store, you can usually find them for less than $20 a piece.

Sometimes you have to wonder if Lucas predicted that within a few years that VHS would be obsolete and thus the unavailability of the OUT would become a reality, at least until he gave into studio pressure in 2006. You have to remember DVD didnt exist yet when the ‘Faces’ sets were released.
DVD was developed around 1995. Lucas must have been at least aware a new optical disc format was coming. I had an odd conversation with a video/music shop employee around 1996, who defended the Laserdisc section being cleared out because DVD was coming.
I’m just surprised he didn’t release the 97SE on DVD when the VHS and Laserdisc versions came out. He kept saying how these were now the “definitive” version of the films, and that would have been the perfect way to cement that. Most likely he wanted the prequels out on the format first, then the OT.

I just think it’s hilarious that in the very next scene of the '11 version, the digital rocks magically disappear.
Yeah. If George was still in charge, maybe he’d add some tumbling rock sound effects during one of Ben’s shots in the 2017 edition.
I wouldn’t be surprised.
Some of the changes have been very ironic, at least when taking into consideration his “artistic vision” statement.
So it was your vision to have a really bad sped-up Emperor scream dubbed over Luke, but then also your vision to take it out the next time you released the movies?
Right…
I read somewhere whoever was mixing the 2004 cut just sort of told Lucas he was taking it out, and George just sort of shrugged it off. I don’t have a source for this, however.
You can’t lay down and look at 3D sideways. 50% of the time when I watch a movie I lay down on the couch. You can’t do this with 3D. Plus it just doesn’t really add anything to the experience for me.
Star Wars: the CG “humor” in Mos Eisley.
ESB: The 04 Emperor. I wouldn’t mind it as much had they kept the original dialogue.
ROTJ: Jedi Rocks. This just plain makes me want to gouge my eyes out and shove them into my ears.
Composited models look more real, although you can get more creative movement out of CG.
And going back to ESB 97, the cleaned up effects just hold things together really well. This mostly comes down to the Hoth battle, which looks incredible in the 97. It also doesn’t have the fucking 04 emperor.

The crawl and pan down look wonderful! Excellent work!
I did a capture of the Faces tape for Star Wars, and have captured Empire and Jedi as well. I just need to get around to finishing them. I also intend to capture the 2000 tapes and the making of featurettes from the 97 tapes, and possibly the featurette from the letterboxed TPM tape. I think the ESB SE ('97) is a tad better than the theatrical though, minus some wonky CGI.
I’m kind of with you on this, but even if the 97 was perfect, I would prefer the original. The only issues I have with it content wise are Luke’s scream and removing “Bring my shuttle” and its associated hoopla.
