Oprah appeals to the more liberal minded people. But if you want Trump gone, we need someone that will appeal to the moderate and conservative-light people. Obviously the liberals are going to vote for the Democrat whoever it is. But the moderates and conservative-light people need to be won over.

I don’t want someone who will appeal to conservatives. That Would inhibit the potential good that a genuine liberal president can do.

I said moderates and conservative-light people. What would really inhibit the potential good that a genuine liberal President could do, is if a Conservative was elected. Liberals + moderates + conservative-lights = election win for Dems.

In other news, I’ve suddenly fallen pretty hard for a guy. He’s probably straight, but even if he isn’t, any relationship I pursue with him would result in my execution and subsequent trip to hell. I continue to daydream nonetheless, and hope God has mercy on my soul whenever I do die.

What?

Okay, as a Christian myself, I don’t see having such feelings for, or a relationship with, a guy means you’re going to hell. Seriously. Many conservatives or evangelicals are really judgy about that, but they need to check themselves because the Bible says plenty about loving each other and not being quick to judge. Certainly it does say homosexuality is wrong, but it says a truckload of things are wrong—things that people do wrong all the time every single day. Which is why we need a Savior because we can’t fix it ourselves.

Sorry for my soapbox. But really, I don’t see you going to hell for that.

Agreed.

Is it really this hard for you guys to put yourself in someone else’s shoes for a moment? Someone who isn’t the majority in this country, be it numerical majority (white) or power majority (male)?

This post was gratuitous but maybe some could benefit from this book.

The book description must have been written before 2008, at one point it talks about black people not being able to be President.

It’s from 2006 and Senator Obama is discussed in the book and the author mocks the idea he might become president.

I assume he no longer does that.

Why is it a requirement to get all fired up about this speech? That if one doesn’t get fired up about it, that automatically indicates that one must be unable to remotely identify with others?

Why is it so hard for you to put yourself in someone else’s shoes who does not share your opinion and not be critical of them?

When the plain truth is spoken loud n’ clear to an audience of that size it should be applauded no matter how well you thought it was delivered.

When did I say I wouldn’t have applauded if I had been in the audience?

You don’t have to be in the same room to be in the audience.

So when you watched it the first time, you stood up and applauded just like the audience did?

“Applaud” doesn’t mean “stand n’ cheer”.

The speech just didn’t move me, I don’t know what else to say.

Maybe I would have found it more moving if I were black and/or a woman, I don’t know.

I guess my ultimate question is why you would have to be black and/or female to have a positive reaction to the speech rather than “meh” but I’m willing to drop it at this point.

You already answered that with this:

She made a big and inspiring speech.

meh.

Pfft. Good grief.

I just didn’t think it was that great or that moving.

What was it about, Warbler?

Racism, sexism, sexual harassment/assault, “me too”, advancement of African Americans and women, etc.

So…stuff that doesn’t affect you?

Probably not as much as they do women and minorities, but I still consider them to be important issues.

Definitely not as much as them.

I give up (again).

Oh well.

Dismissing it with a “Meh” shows you to be uncaring. Not saying you are, but that’s the picture your reaction paints.

Sorry, I mean to sound uncaring. I do care. The speech just didn’t move me.

if you are going to get upset every time you reply to frink, maybe try not replying.

I’m not upset. Just let Warbler have his opinion, is what I’m saying.

oh, so you are upset for warbler. just let warbler be upset for himself is all i’m saying.

Who says Warbler is upset?

I just didn’t think it was that great or that moving. On a side note, I think I’d rather have someone just say thank you to whomever they feel need to be thanked when winning an award like a Golden Globe or an Oscar, instead of making a political speech. But that is just me.

It was a lifetime achievement award.

and not a victory speech after winning election to public office.

Have you even seen the speech?

yes.

Well you have a very interesting interpretation of it.

Sorry.

Alternatively, and probably more easily; get someone that actually excites the liberal base—get the non-voters to go out and vote. Going right isn’t always, or even usually, the answer.

the liberals alone can’t elect a President.

They can if all of them vote. Let’s say, hypothetically, that the country has an even 50/50 split between liberals and conservatives. The 20XX election rolls around, and neither liberals or conservatives are too happy about their choices; so there’s only a 50% voter turnout, with half of the votes being for the left-leaning candidate and the other half for the conservative. If the liberals were excited about their candidate, then more would go out and vote, tipping the election towards the left-wing candidate.

maybe. But I think you have a better chance at combining the liberal and the moderate, especial when the other choice is Trump.

They managed to elect Trump by staying at home.

You think they stayed home? I thought they voted for Hillary or the Green party.

Actually, I thought that was what was being attempted with Hillary. As democrats go, she was pretty centrist.

Hillary was hated by too many people.
