As creator of this thread and therefore arbiter of the official ot.com chess championship, I feel it is my duty to set up a game between our champion (Darth Ender) and Puggo - Jar Jar’s Yoda. Puggo says he was an expert-level tournament player for many years. This is reason enough for Darth Ender to have to defend his title against Puggo.

As for table tennis - don’t get me started. It is most certainly a sport. The level of fitness required to play at top level is pretty much like soccer. If you don’t believe that, simply go online and watch some world class matches. A lot of people think that the way they play at home is indicative of what it is like at a competitive level, when the two bear little resemblance.

This is doubly true for badminton. Many serious players won’t even play singles because it is too exhausting. Here too, watch a world class match and see the level of fitness and exertion on display. Badminton is one of the most aerobically-demanding sports one could choose.

As for chess, I was an expert-level tournament player for many years, and never considered it a sport. However, my view changed a bit during the first Karpov-Kasparov match, when the match had to be cancelled over fears of Karpov’s health. The length of the match, and the games, and the stress, Karpov had lost over 20 pounds (I think he was only 135 BEFORE the match) and had clinical exhaustion. Physical fitness is actually a factor because of the nature of the prolonged concentration and stress endured during an extended match. Top players train physically as well as mentally. I’m still not sure I’d call it a sport, though.

I wasn’t really talking about classical chess(where players have all day to make moves), I was talking about speed or blitz chess which sometimes requires players to move in a blur.

We need to set you up in a chess game with the ot.com official chess champion, Darth Ender.

There is physical exertion involved in cooking/baking competitions are they now to be considered sports?

I would say a sport needs to have clearly definded rules, so that there are objective criteria to determine a winner. Winning a cooking competition has a lot to do with creativity, which cannot be objectively measured, so I’d say it’s not a sport. You could make a sport out of certain aspects of cooking, though. For example, who can cut the most onions in a given time.

there are multiple sports that are left to opinion to decide the winner. gymnastics, figure skating, boxing(if there is no KO or TKO). These things are left to judges to decide.

Warb, men are physically more capable than women in several aspects, like you mentioned previously. Thats a fact. The thing is, sports judge those exact feats in which men are superior to women. Dahmage asked why is that, because that will inevitably make women “less capable” in sports than men since we’re judging something that men are biologically superior on, so of course women can’t keep up.

Sports just became what they are, there wasn’t any deep dark conspiracy to keep women down. This is sports we are talking about. SPORTS! Of course they are going to involve strength and speed. What the heck do you expect?

I personally think women might be naturally better shooters or better videogame players than men, so that’s why I mentioned videogames.

possibly, but why do you think women might better at those things than men?

You do realize you’re now making the same argument that Trump is currently making in defending men accused of abuse and harassment, right?

Am I?

Peoples lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation. Some are true and some are false. Some are old and some are new. There is no recovery for someone falsely accused - life and career are gone. Is there no such thing any longer as Due Process?

I will grant you the difference is that there was process in the case you are talking about. Was it due process though?

Yes it was. The case was heard by grand jury and dismissed. That is the way the system works.

it is treated like a sport.

And that’s good enough for you? In that case…

wow, how athletic they look. I bet they are barely breaking a sweat, if at all.

I didn’t know it was possible to miss the point by this much.

I see you’ve met warbler.

If nothing else the physical strain on your eyes should be enough to consider.

oh good grief.

To say that video games have the same amount of physical exertion as chess means that you’ve never played video games.

have you have every played blitz chess?

Nope, are you saying it’s a sport?

no, I am saying playing playing video games has no more physical exertion than playing blitz chess when your time is running out. I see videos of professionals making moves when time running out, I seen their arms and hands move in a blur.

look how fast these guys move their pieces.

That’s basically ping pong.

If playing video games is a sport, so is ping pong.
