This is near me: http://www.pennlive.com/news/2017/03/immigration_raids_allison_hill.html

Some parents are reluctant to drop their children off at school for fear of getting stopped, said Daniels, who is an immigration attorney. Instead, the children are missing classes.

“It’s really bad,” Daniels said. “They don’t just stop the person they’re looking for. They hassle everyone who’s around.”

My biggest issue with how illegal immigration is treated in this country is how we treat those who have already been here for more than a year. Once someone is settled in a place, it really is inhumane to deport them. you are ruining many lives, and that has a ripple effect in making this world a worse place. worse because: more poverty, more crime, less education, on and on.

I don’t know, but somehow it doesn’t make sense to me to write the our immigration laws saying “If you illegally sneak into our country and remain here illegally and manage to evade deportation long enough, Congratulations! You win! You can stay!” Sorry, but that is not how this works unfortunately. Besides doesn’t doing that encourage others to attempt to try to come into the country illegally? Also exactly how do we determine who is and is not “settled”? I don’t know what should be done with such people, but I am pretty sure the solution isn’t to just ignore the law and ignore the fact that they illegally came into to the country and are still here illegally and ignore that they have neither citizenship or visa.

I hate the Young Turks as much as the next guy, but I don’t think Mankiewics is a huge proponent of their bullshit. I guess he’s complicit, but he seems nice.

Alright, so I just found out that Ben Mankiewics does contribute to TYT, but only regarding Films & Sports. I still don’t lump Ben with Cenk and his main crew that deal with politics, social issue and other topical discussions. Yes, I agree, he does seem nice, just as long as he sticks to Films & Sports.

You can easily find videos of Mankiewics on TYT doing more than talking about Films & Sports. Look it up. He is one of them.

Here’s a good reason to avoid California: earthquakes.

There are quake faults all over the country and the world. Washington DC got hit by one a few years back, and the Washington Monument had to close for repairs.
And then there’s this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_Seismic_Zone

And goodness knows what Irwin Allen wet dream all the byproducts of fracking activity might unleash eventually.

Another California myth people seem to buy into is the entire state would somehow fall into the ocean when the big one hits. And this was before the silly disaster movies of recent vintage.

Yes, I remember the one that damaged the Washington Monument. It was felt in my area. I posted about it on the forum the day it happened.

Maybe it is a myth that the entire state would fall into the ocean, but I don’t think it is myth that scientists fear “the big one” might hit California sometime soon.

Which is why new structures have to meet strict standards out here, and older ones have to be retrofitted. The 1994 Northridge Quake gave scientists a lot of new data on how certain structures fail.

Will any of this structures be able to stand up to “the bid one”?

I guess the large population of people who can’t speak English could be irritating to people. That usually doesn’t bother me though, I love CA.

You would bring something like that up.

Is he wrong? Some people are definitely irritated by that. He didn’t say it irritates him, in fact he said it doesn’t.

is the number of people in California that can’t speak English really that high?

Yes.

https://www.census.gov/prod/2013pubs/acs-22.pdf

8.4% per a 2011 survey, which is tied for second with Mississippi (which I would not have guessed) and only behind Texas.

Ok, I stand corrected.

Also there are those that can’t speak English in other states as well.

You’ve missed the point much like Impscum did.

I did?

It has a Gini coefficient of 0.471, ranked #44 in the United States and the same as the Dominican Republic.

Gini coefficient???

I had never heard of it either, but there’s this amazing new thing called Google that helped me out.

You would bring something like that up.

You would ignore something like that.

*sigh*

Wait, we’re hacking cars to commit assassinations? I didn’t know this. Who have we assassinated via this method, so far?

I don’t know, maybe this guy?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Hastings_(journalist)

Former U.S. National Coordinator for Security, Infrastructure Protection, and Counter-terrorism Richard A. Clarke said that what is known about the crash is “consistent with a car cyber attack”. He was quoted as saying “There is reason to believe that intelligence agencies for major powers — including the United States — know how to remotely seize control of a car. So if there were a cyber attack on [Hastings’] car — and I’m not saying there was, I think whoever did it would probably get away with it.”

That was written 4 years ago.

Smells like a conspiracy theory to me.

Yeah, it won’t seem right to watch movies on TCM without his introduction 😦

Well Ben Mankiewicz has been hosting too for awhile now. Osborne’s health hasn’t been so great in the past few years so it’s not a big surprise, but it is still a great loss, indeed.

I can’t help but think of Mankiewicz as one of the Young Turks, he is just not in the same class as Osborne.
