The Brave Little Toaster (1987) 4K 35mm Film Scan! (WIP)

WOW! This is wonderful to hear, and I will look forward to the finished product. I’d love a peek at what’s here now, too.
One of my first questions was whether this is finally OAR. It must be since it’s a film print, but it looks super close to 1.33, perhaps it’s 1.67.

Thank you for bringing this to us. Stoked!

No problem! I have been wanting to get this scanned for about a year now so finally seeing it happen is unreal. Also this print isn’t matted fir 1.33.1 it’s actually a wider and taller aspect ratio than that so you could do a 1.66.1 or 1.78.1 crop of the movie if you wanted!

Oh man, really? …only a few weeks after I nearly give myself carpal t from cleaning those 2309 frames in photoshop?! The universe is wacky and near cruel with this stuff sometimes! 😃

But seriously, that’s cool news. I’m too poor to donate though. And also, the time I put in on Octorox’s has me feeling I’ve paid the Brave Little Toaster fan release gods their due. 😃

Good luck with this! Hopefully donations come your way

Yeah, sorry to hear your work on your HD restoration might be going to waste now. Some things you might want to know is the scene where the PAL and NTSC DVDs have “ghosting” when the Lamp is dancing around is actually on this print as well and probably an error with an optical effect

The Brave Little Toaster (1987) 4K 35mm Film Scan! (WIP)
Time

After nearly 35 years of staying stuck in Disney’s vault, a true HD version of The Brave Little Toaster is here!

This movie was originally released in 1987 to a limited theatrical release making prints of this film very hard to come by! This is also German print so not only is the printing guaranteed to produce really sharp results, but unlike the later US DVD this is uncensored!

EDIT: This has already been fully funded and scanned. Currently not accepting donations for this project. Thanks for all the help from the forum!

UPDATE FOR DONORS:
Raw scans and new encodes will be made very soon! Sorry for the long wait, but there has been quite a long queue so expect raw scans and encodes to be ready in early August at the latest! I am also in contact with Jerry Rees the director of the original film and Brian McEntee who helped color time the original film to help work on restoration and general guidance. Can’t wait to give more updated soon! Anyone who has access to the Google Drive folder will receive the raw scans in the same folder when they are ready.

BIG UPDATE 8/24/22:

A full ProRes encode of the scan including Analog LaserDisc audio from Greg Z is ready for download for DONORS! File size is about 190 GB rendered at 4K and a lower bitrate (possibly Blu-Ray compatible encode) will also be uploaded within the next few days. If you want access DM me!

Special thanks to Quazza for rendering the raw image sequence as ProRes, and helping me encode the final video sync ProRes files. This project wouldn’t be possible without his help! And thank you to everyone who helped support this project through donations and contributing to the project in general. Seeing this movie scanned was such a pipedream and is now a reality. Although I suppose he would want to remain anonymous huge thanks to the owner of the print for lending it free of charge to be scanned. Without him I wouldn’t have even known this film had prints out in the wild in the first place and I wouldn’t have had such a wonderful opportunity preserving it.

The project is not over of course. I plan on doing a full on restoration of the film with possible director’s guidance and help from members of Kineko Video for a public release. I don’t plan on keeping this scan private and I believe it deserves to be seen by everyone. I do apologize to those that can’t watch this right now and I hope you get to see it soon! I am willing to answer any questions regarding the project and I have a Twitter account where I post constant updates, screenshots, and information about the scan and the film.

The Matrix 35mm (Released)
Time

eggplant said:

I’ve got that 35mm copy and will be posting screenshots from it, but for the time being-

I’ve scanned in the only cell from the movie I have- a frame of the CGI fields of humans, from when Morpheus is explaining to Neo what the Matrix is in the construct (timestamp 42:57)

I scanned it in at 4000dpi on my 35mm scanner (not a flatbed), to compare to this 35mm scan, and a IAMABLE 2160p release of the Blu-Ray:

My own 4000dpi scan:
my4000dpiscan

The ‘latest’ 35mm scan:
latest35mmscan

The IAMABLE 2160p Blu-Ray release:
IAMABLE2160pBluRay

I’m no movie grader, hopefully how I processed it isn’t too off. The white fog on the left was consistently an issue to get right.

My cell seems to have a bit more top and bottom too.

Do you plan on releasing your scan?

Spider-Man: No Way Home Original Theatrical Version
Time

Since I saw No Way Home in theaters last year I noticed quite a few things Marvel/Sony has been changing with the film mid theatrical run like fixing CGI, changing how shots play out, additional color grading, and more.

SPOILERS AHEAD!:

Here are some screenshots of instances of color grading being changed between the theatrical version and the upcoming Blu-Ray and streaming versions:

Web-version/Blu-Ray on the left and the Theatrical on the right
https://slow.pics/c/cUAWdGZ4

Not to mention probably one of the most well-known instances of Sony changing CGI in the film was the Goblin alleyway scene where the CGI was unfinished and they decided to do a quick string of shots to hide it.

There are probably many other edits made that I don’t know about, but I would like to know what you guys think. I do find preserving the best possible quality of the original theatrical release interesting and it might be worth doing down the line.

The Gumby Show 16mm Preservation

i’m interested in how one restores a 16mm print.

I always wanted to try a single episode of Star Blazers to see if it was possible to do the show in HD.

Gumby ought to be interesting.

Here are the results with color correction. Sadly it doesn’t have any many details as the DVD since the DVD uses a 35mm master, but it still looks quite nice.

The Gumby Show 16mm Preservation
Time

Hey everyone I got another quick 16mm crowdfund!

It’s a 16mm TV print for The Gumby Show!

This show has only ever had DVD sets and what seems to be weirdly mixed audio so not only would this be interesting to see the show in higher quality, but with something closer to the original sound!

I am covering about 16 dollars of the cost on this but I need 2 more people to help split 10 dollars each way on the rest for scanning. [Donors get a full-frame 4K scan of the print]

Donors:
Me - 16 USD
Donor - 10 USD
Donor - 10 USD

(UDPATE: FULLY FUNDED!)

Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids 4K 16mm Preservation! (Looking for donors)
Time

Recently I and a friend purchased 16mm prints for Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids from eBay interested to see how they would compare to the current DVDs. Finally, after about a year they have been scanned! 2 episodes were scanned first being labeled “Summer Camp” with the real episode title being “Fish Out of Water” and the other episode being called “Do Your Own Thing” with the real episode title being “Tomboy”.

Screenshot:
https://i.slow.pics/Wdq4YjXQ.png

While these have been scanned fundraising is needed in order to pay off the scanning costs. Currently, there are 4 people helping out privately with 10 dollar donations out of the 75 total it cost to scan. If you are interested in helping please DM me and I can give the details needed! Donors get raw/uncropped 4K scans of both episodes!

Donors so far:
5 = 50 USD

Needed:
3 donors 10 dollars each (Covering the remaining 35 dollars plus PayPal fees)

I did a quick encode to clean up chroma artifacts and decimate to NTSC on the German DVD and synced it up with Hifi VHS audio from the 91 VHS release. I think I did a decent job. Of course, Stereo LaserDisc audio would be superior.

Is the DVD surround sound not good?

I think it’s pretty mediocre. I just prefer the original theatrical stereo mix

It’s been a while. Got any updates?

Sadly I’m unable to do this project at the time. I will probably remove this thread so I won’t mislead people I honestly forgot I posted it. I had contact with someone who had these trailers but since then haven’t been able to talk to them about scanning due to a falling out. Ff I can scan them in the future I will reopen this thread!

Definitely would like a MEGA link via DM.

I can upload the DVD5 with the Russian VHS rip, but I honestly wanted to do a “restoration” of the VHS to convert it to NTSC, clean up artifacts, and sync the original English DTS audio. I am uploading to Drive now tho. I am gonna PM all the people who asked for links later tonight.

Info & Offer: The Brave Little Toaster - 1991 NTSC VHS
Time

Recently I purchased a sealed VHS copy of Brave Little Toaster. Thankfully this NTSC release is unmodified from later NTSC releases and has the original stereo mix of the movie! Sadly despite the tape being brand new in the clamshell case the video and audio are a tad messy. If anyone is interested in a download let me know!

Willy Wonka Original Mono Mix Preservation Opportunity!
Time

Hey everyone I am interested in getting the original 1991 Wonka LaserDisc transferred to get the original Mono mix. It has never been released past that 1991 release and the new 4K BD lacks it as well.

If anyone is interested in fundraising to purchase the LaserDisc let me know! I only need 40 USD. I have someone I can send the disc to for transfer and I have done it before many times with other LaserDiscs! PM me if interested!

LDDB for the disc:

EDIT:
Someone already ripped the LaserDisc on FanRes synced with the 4K UHD.
