Idea &amp; Info: '<strong>Sorcerer</strong>' - William Friedkin 1977 vs <strong>Wages of Fear</strong> - European theatrical release (see djsmokingjam's &amp; El Barto's posts for info on 2 separate project releases)
Time

So I just read the plot in the wiki article on this movie. Why is the movie called “Sorcerer” when there doesn’t seem to be anything in it related to sorcery or some reason as to the name of the movie?

Also is this the movie where when transporting the nitro via trucks they come across a really corrugated section of the road and they decide they have to get a run up and go as fast as they can to essentially “skip” over the top of the corrugations to minimise the vibrations and therefore the chance of the nitro exploding? If so, then I’ve seen this movie but not for many many years since my early childhood.

I’ve got no problem with the “a Star Wars story” part. Keeps the fairy tale vibe and it’s proper branding.
I think it’s a good tag for the spin-offs.

Agreed and it’s a good way of letting the audience know not to expect a Star Wars movie by the numbers like a proper episode would be (ie. “this is a star wars STORY, not a star wars MOVIE”) which is why I don’t mind the differences in R1 to what you normally expect in a Star Wars movie from one of the official trilogies.

I was only expressing my opinion, for which I explained the underlying reasons several times in the past. I do not see the point of explaining the same reasons to the people who are already familiar with them whenever I want to repeat my opinion. Especially since whenever I do restate my reasons behind my opinion I get these kind of responses:
http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/1056497

I’d just like to point out for when you return - if people are already familiar with your reasons then they are also familiar with your actual opinion on the matter which makes continually stating it rather redundant no?

I’m not saying this means you can’t restate it if you wish but you need bring additional, constructive information to the discussion that wasn’t present in your reasons when previously discussing the matter, or pose it from a different perspective in trying to argue your point. Simply interjecting a flat statement into an active discussion that people are already aware of (many times over) is just plain irritating and the form of your statement also has an abrasive element to it that indirectly insults anyone that actually likes the movie.

Continually chucking your throw away statement / insult into the discussion every time it comes up just makes you seem arrogant and an irritating spanner in the works of trying to have an involved discussion with other invested people that contribute constructively. It can also start to come across that you are aggressively pushing you opinion onto others.

Anyway, just some food for thought I’d offer you while you’re on vacation 😉

😃 well, despite being plagued by a few pretty questionable choices, I feel ROTS has still a more interesting story and a bigger emotional impact than both R1 and TFA, closer to ROTJ in this regard. Keep in mind that the version I’m familiar with is dubbed, by very talented voice actors too, so no bad acting.
I still think R1 is a good movie, though, especially in its first half.

Fair enough. I’m assuming you are referring to a version with another language dubbed over top?

Boxmonkey, I would suggest burning at 1x and enable the “verify” option. This should ensure the best burn and it check at the end that what was burned matches the source file.

I’d only try one more time though or maybe even hold off until other more experienced members can comment as those dual layer BDs are not cheap!

I don’t know how anyone could rate any of the PT movies above any of the other SW or “A SW Story” movies. They will forever remain at the bottom of my list irregardless of what any fanedit manages to salvage.

Though I guess if I were to include the OT SEs in the list separately from the theatrical OT / DSEs, I would put the SEs below the PT, so much do I hate what GL did to his original creations.

I will never again watch any version of the SEs, whereas I do still watch my definitive selection of PT edits.

Those continuity issues are of the least concern when it comes to editing. I’ve never noticed them before and I still can’t see what they are (on my phone). Far more jarring would be something like the skiff pointing in one direction in one shot and another in another.

I would have to watch the scenes in question to get a better idea of it (and that is how a cut should be judged, not just by looking at stills), but at the end of the day no matter what you have to realize that if a professional editor flipped a shot there was a damn good reason for it, and an eagle eyed fan pointing out Carrie’s birthmark is in the wrong spot is not a good enough reason to flip it back.

Yeah I agree that I’ve never noticed these flip shots before so they obviously work well and I do wonder if they get noticed as continuity issues from over-analysing a movie frame by frame (or like many fan editors, have simply gone over the material too often to not notice such details) rather than as an edit was meant to be viewed in the context of how it is expected to be viewed (as a motion picture). I highly doubt any but a very few would ever notice such matters during the first or even first handful of viewings when your mind is focused on all the new information it is receiving rather than critically comparing such minor (at the time) details.

One does have to ask though, why then isn’t this 180 rule taken into consideration much more when actually filming the scenes? Is this not part of the directors job?

For anyone that doesn’t know what the 180 rule is (like me 5 minutes ago), below is the wiki explanation:

180-degree rule

In film making, the 180-degree rule is a basic guideline regarding the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene. An imaginary line called the axis connects the characters, and by keeping the camera on one side of this axis for every shot in the scene, the first character is always frame right of the second character, who is then always frame left of the first. The camera passing over the axis is called jumping the line or crossing the line; breaking the 180-degree rule by shooting on all sides is known as shooting in the round.

The 180-degree rule enables the audience to visually connect with unseen movement happening around and behind the immediate subject and is important in the narration of battle scenes.

Why the hell do they flip so many shots and apparently for no discernible reason?

Regarding the emperor dummy, can’t say I ever noticed this and probably won’t be able to forget it now damnit! Do you go frame by frame in these movies to notice such things or was it just readily obvious to you?

Hey Cap, you might want to edit the quote in your post to only include the image you are referring to. It’s rather irritating to scroll through a post of that length (especially on the same page) just to find a single sentence response at the end.

As you’ll see in the below quote, mods have already asked another member to keep this in mind and clean up their previous post doing the same thing 😉

Yep, I know. I got mine from you back in July! I’ve been wanting to set up something like this since then. But I also wanted to get a green light from leading users of this site first. Once I got approval from NJVC and Harmy, I posted as quickly as I could.

I couldn’t quite remember if you were one of the members I provided the links for but it was also more just a general comment in regards to the rest of what I was saying rather than specifically making a point of it 😛

I did the same thing, waiting till I had confirmation from NJVC before proceeding to make them available. It’s a shame we haven’t seen them around here more often, the whole profiteer ordeal seems to have put them off being active in the community for now with no new posts since they announced the links would be removed due to the issue 😕

Great work Solkap! Awesome to see these available again and with a great guide to boot. I’ve already got my copies but it’s good to know other SW fans will be able to again get and appreciate these amazing creations and enjoy the SW they remember and love so dearly in a way that should have always been possible.

Fingers crossed it doesn’t escalate the copies being sold for profit but I guess NJVC has had a good think about and decided to release them again anyway which is a big decision seeing as how the whole situation must make them feel. Hopefully by making these easy to get (like 2 seconds of google searching), it should actually head of the need of anyone buying them on eBay and instead invest a smaller part of that money if need be in official SW copies instead to meet the requested requirements of owning the movies to acquire these blurays.

Note that I found searching for “star wars despecialized blu ray” returned NJVC’s original thread as the first result so it might be good to ask him to include a link for this thread at the top of his OP, as you know that for many people even reading past two lines of text is too much which will then see them go looking for the still easier method of obtaining these if they have cash to spare.

Yeah it just must be a shadow at the bottom of the bowl with the moving water that made it seem in my memory like there was more than one. In the scene when Jabba eats the frog-like creature from the water bowl and then “Leia” enters with Chewbacca chained up “to collect the bounty on him”, in the next shot showing Jabba the frog-like creature is shown in the water bowl again.

I don’t see any issue with this one, to me it actually looks like there are at least two frog creatures in the bowl in the top shot and only one in the bottom shot. I’d always imagined he originally had a bowl full of them since Jabba’s a pretty big guy and by the last shot he is down to the last one after having just seen him down the other one he just grabbed out.

I am very glad Ady will be adding some more B-wings and new pilot scenes, I would love to see the executor being taken down by B-wings. He could totally keep the scenes on the Bridge … but take out the crashing A-wing and instead have a 3 B-wing Squad do a full blast on the bridge.

I’m all for more B-Wings, but I hope the A-Wing still takes out the Super Destroyer bridge.
Ady has said that he will be recreating the famous production art of the B-Wings taking out a couple regular Destroyers*, which will add even more epic scale and destruction to the battle.

Great ideas, either of them would be awesome!

Till recently the thought of OT fanedits has never entered my mind and they still never will for ANH and TESB. However, being part of this community for a while now has made me realise that ROTJ could possibly use some tweaking here and there to as you say, strengthen it in view of the other two movies.

Your edit sounds very interesting, especially with the fact you used Harmy’s DSE as the base for 95% of it. My only gripes that make me reluctant to watch it though are:

  • You left in the CGI creatures in Jabba’s palace despite removing Jedi Rocks. Never had a problem with the original scene nor Nappti Lek.

  • You kept the SE ending and music. It’s not one of my most hated changes by GL but it’s still up there with most of the big ones as it completely messes with how I feel at the end of the last SW movie (till Ep7:TFA came along anyway but ROTJ will always feel like the closer on the OT with TFA starting the next trilogy).

I don’t know if it’s to much to ask, but would you consider making a 100% DSE edition of your edit or at least revert the above matters to their DSE versions in an alternate edit?

.Val

It’s Lapti Nek, not Nappti Lek.

LMAO!!

I thought “Nappti Lek” didn’t quite sound right but it wasn’t a big enough itch to make me double check my muddled memory. Thanks for the correction XD

It would be nice to have a <5gb or multipart file option so that Mega would work.

Shouldn’t you just be able to use winzip, winrar or 7zip to split it up into multiple files? This might help also in producing a larger video file if darthrush has the ability to produce a higher quality one (having read earlier that the quality seems a bit lacking when compared to other edits)?

.Val

I replied to that review and made it clear that I encoded Harmy’s source work straight to a high-bitrate 1080p digital copy that looks great on the tv. I compared it to popular edits and it has much better video quality than the Dan Edit, the Spence Edit’s, the Ziggy edit, and equal/slightly better than Q2’s video quality. It’s not a full blu ray copy, but it has no problems in the technical visual specs.

Ah glad to hear, I haven’t had a chance to read right through the thread yet and missed that sorry.

What were your thoughts regarding my request on the previous page?

Everyone should also know that the free program “Megadownloader” bypasses the 5 GB limit quite easily. Just plug the mega link into the program, choose your download location, and your on your way!

I take it this is a different program from the official app?

What I’m saying is that with Mega’s new (since August) 5gb cap, any file larger than that is unavailable unless you’re a paying customer. I just wanted to let him know so he might split the file into parts, since I’d be unable to get this edit otherwise.

Yeah I’m aware of the 5gb limit which you can get around by simply restarting your modem / router and resuming your download (I believe you need to have the mega app installed). I’m no longer a paying member of mega and have just downloaded two 8gb single file fanedits with a third one of the same size on the way (the new PT Proxy edits). I did of course get the prompt to purchase a plan each time I reach the 5gb limit, I just exit the mega app though, restart my router and then reopen the app once I get my internet connection back and the download resumes as you get a new IP address from your ISP upon modem restart.

There are other ways to accomplish the same thing but as you suggested, making the file multi part also helps in this scenario which I was just saying you should be able to do this with one of the mentioned programs (more so for the OP’s information if they weren’t aware).
