Who says Han wanted to be reassuring ? 😄

Definitely one way it could be taken, especially since the betrayal would still be pretty real and fresh in Han’s mind after being frozen in carbonite till not long before. The fact Lando is obviously there helping with the rescue effort wouldn’t undo the emotional affects of the betrayal.

Personally I will always vote Yub Nub as that’s what is ingrained in my memories and just goes with those scenes. I don’t mind Victory Celebration, though the opening 17-18sec are a bit odd with the sounds used especially the deep “AWHHHHawhhhAWWHH” which makes me think of Trolling Saruman LOL (if you don’t know what I refer to - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaqC5FnvAEc)

Hi, adywan

During the Sarlaac Pit scene when Han is aiming the blaster at the Sarlaac’s tentacle around Lando’s leg, will you be keeping Han’s original line “It’s alright, trust me” or the SE “It’s alright, I can see a lot better”?

As a suggestion, I would say using the original one.

If this is up for discussion then I agree. The original line is building their relationship again after the betrayal at Cloud City while the SE line is making a joke during a moment of dramatic seriousness, deflating the tension as we wait to see if he will shoot the Sarlacc or Lando.

Strong Female characters in the Star Wars universe

Leia, Mon Mothma, Rey, Jyn Erso, Rose Tico, Holdo, Ahsoka Tano, Captain Phasma, Asajj Ventress, Hera Syndulla, and Sabine Wren.

While all are definitely representing women and most portray strong individuals (though I’m not familiar with any Clone Wars or novel characters outside of the Heir to the Empire novel trilogy), personally I wouldn’t classify Rey, Holdo, Rose or Phasma as strong characters per se.

Both Rey and Holdo are riddled with issues and their purpose is often pretty muddled and unclear. They are both also highly unrelatable, Rey being good to excellent at pretty much anything she does and who would actually act like Holdo, especially in a military sense and after everything that happens between her and Poe, she suddenly does an about face to proclaim to Leia that she likes him? (Yeah, unconscious LOL)

Rose feels tacked on and just so Finn has a companion to go do something with that ultimately is pointless. She is often also used as a pure exposition tool for communicating to audiences the messaging apparent in the unnecessary Canto Bight romp.

Captain Phasma is in both movies for all of something like a couple of minutes total at best and while initially seeming important and imposing (so you could point to her being similar to Mon Mothma in these matters), the story itself ultimately makes her pretty basic in the scheme of things. Essentially she just parades about in her chrome armour, confronts Finn and is beaten by him in both movies and that’s almost the extent of her character - to be the token baddie for Finn to fight and overcome.

Anyway, this thread is meant to be discussing strong characters but when weak and highly flawed characters (IMHO) are added to the list, discussion is needed to demonstrate why they shouldn’t be included. Unless you think differently of course, in which case - discuss away 😉

When did you realize that George Lucas was full of it

I completely stopped believing in George when I found out that he edited midichlorians into The Making of Star Wars. If he can just change history like that, I don’t trust a word he says.

Are you serious! Do you have a time stamp for the offending piece?

It would seem then that even the original official documentaries need preserving as protection against revisionist George 😕

I have much respect for the man for numerous reasons and could never thank him enough for giving us Star Wars but in the same breath I hate what he has done to the OT and wish he’d had the type of people helping him shape the OT, onboard with him as well for the PT.

I don’t think George is full of it but the point at which I started seriously getting pissed off with him was the changes to the OT crossing a culmulative threashold where Han no longer shoots first, there’s prequel level silly shit going on around Mos Eisley, Obiwan’s force scream mimic to scare of the Sand People sounds ridiculous that it makes me do a “WTF?” laugh, Luke now screams as he falls down the Cloud City shaft, Vader says “NOOOOOOOO!” when picking up the Emperor, completely different end celebration music after the funeral pyre with obvious CGI locations celebrating, including Gungans.

Anything that simply enhances the original experience I was fine with and often improved the movie in terms of more believable effects, though with the OOT unavailable I think anything that replaces at the time ground breaking effects and models that people helping make Star Wars put untold hours and effort into, is simply not on.

At this stage I am also not happy that he sold the franchise to Disney. I think he should have kept hold of it and simply allowed other directors to make new Star Wars movies for him with himself as Exec Producer / Assistant Director and story consultant or something like that.

Better than 'ignore' function
Time

I fully support this idea, sounds like a great way to make someone think twice before posting something they probably shouldn’t and allows the possibility of seeing a post by someone you’ve added to the list that you might actually relate to and possibly start the process of resolving differences instead of having fragmentation of the community and oddly stilted conversations because one or more people cant see other responses that are part of the overall discussion.

Mods, is there any chance this could be implemented? Or is there no such functionality available with this particular forum software?

Dealing with People Selling Fan Projects

For my Holiday Special Blu I made I put in a disclaimer at the beginning where I said that it was a fan project intended to be shared with other fans and if you had bought it you’ve been had.

That’s a good idea to include the part about them being scammed if they paid for it. Whether fan editors might go further in their blurb by explaining (in short form) how this has become a major issue and the possible consequences for the future of fan editing should they continue to support and reinforce the illegal activity.

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **

That actually sounds properly awesome Invar! I wonder if it could be even better to have him immediately grab his lightsaber, igniting it as he starts lifting it up from the belt holder and cutting at an upwards angle straight through the right hand guard’s body (as if drawing a sword straight into an upwards slash) who crumples to the floor all the while force choking the other one on the left side, slowly lifting him up as you hear his throat starting to get crushed shut only to utter in the nick of time “by the…Emperor’s comma…nd…” at which point Vader releases him and says “I shall await his convenience” as the guard still alive falls against the railing, trying to recover.

You could have the saber blade tip arc shallowly through part of the elevator tube behind as well, leaving a short visible melt scar there in the direction of his slash with softly glowing edges, becoming visible as the guard crumples to the ground.

I imagine this all happening from a viewpoint behind Vader with his capped back to us so you don’t actually see him grabbing his saber, instead just sensing some sudden slight movement, hearing it ignite and seeing the sudden red glow on the surrounding environment as he then savagely slashes up through the right guard and we see his left hand go out to the left guard to start choking him. Maybe then cut to a side shot of the guard’s red helmeted head against the wall of the elevator tube in the leftmost foreground of the frame with Vader’s outstretch hand visible nearby which leads your eye back to Vader himself in the rightmost background, staring on as he choke’s his victim and then we hear the guard’s line that it’s the Emperor’s command and the guard suddenly drops out of sight as Vader lets go, sheathing his saber and turning away as he intones to wait on the Emperor’s convenience.

Hmm…that was quite fun theorising all of that 😛

That would be so awesome just to inject some menace and power back into his character in this movie and it elevates the achievement of Luke being able to reason with him at all and eventually turn him against the Emperor and back to the light. That even as recent as earlier in the same movie, Vader was still mercilessly killing people for as little as disappointing him or getting in his way.

As for Leia being a damsel in distress , She turned that trope on it’s head and actually ended up taking charge ,“into the garbage shoot flyboy !” and during the swing across the chasm , she blasted her fair share of stormtroopers.plus, she is the best shot out of all of them …she never misses throughout the OT.

Not denying or playing down any of these things, I’m fully aware of them and am just pointing out the few that I think fit the stereotype and at times feel out of character (such as the kiss) which I was attributing to the type of movie that wouldn’t normally have any lead females in a story (at least outside of stereotyped roles). Star Wars was obviously written from a male perspective of what other males would probably enjoy and want to relate to and in that sense it was a massive success. And from that perspective while discussing this I think it is odd (but great) that we got such an awesome character in Leia.

So I’m basically saying, don’t feel bad because there aren’t more female leads in the OT. Instead relish in the fact that we got Leia in that era of movies and that it paved the way for showing how a great character can be in such a movie when played by a capable actress. That a majority of the mostly male fandom love the character despite being female and many female fans love Luke’s character despite being male which shows that great characters transcend the need to see characters in your own sex and ultimately make for the most compelling and enjoyable story telling experience.

PS. Sorry if it seems like a mega delayed reply. I had it mostly written the other night but had to leave and come back to it.

Star Wars Fan Films / Shorts - a general discussion thread

Yeah their articles on this particular matter have seemed pretty biased or without much thought or research past repeating the narrative from SWT point of view. Movieweb has been around for quite a while but seems to focus more on getting stuff out quickly rather than applying to many quality control processes, which makes it a good place to pick up stuff early but you do need to apply your own filters and it can also be quite dependent on who writes the article itself.

All up it has been rather a good springboard for SWT himself with even his video being embedded in the latest article.

No idea what the SuperLucas is all about, some strange reference to honouring his vision or something I guess.

On a different but related matter, this is why I don’t mind Thor. He admits he was wrong about Disney and apologises:

https://youtu.be/DxgP74CtJjs

He also has some great points about either side of the divide around TLJ. Generally Thor is pretty reasonable, logical and level headed about most things and a lot of the time when people speak negatively of him (as in a very false black and white fashion), it is usually their own assumptions and prejudices giving them the wrong impression and understanding, especially if it requires a little more thought or introspection against your own opinion and feelings on the matter to understand a deeper issue whereas I’m sure many people simply switch off if they don’t instantly like what they are hearing. Like anyone else, Thor is just expressing his opinion complete with any human flaws that may make it less than perfect but he does make a lot of valid points which even if you don’t agree with them, can be food for thought that may still have an affect on your opinion or it can just be a window into the perspective of people on the other side of the fence.

A perfect example of how PR is affected regardless of the cold hard facts:

https://movieweb.com/star-wars-9-boycott-disney-darth-vader-fan-film/

Just wanted to say as well that while I think this could have been handled differently by Warner/Disney, I think SWT could have handled it differently as well though I can understand his frustration.

Funnily enough SWT has just posted another video after being in contact with Warner and explains more of what transpired and was understood between him and Lucasfilm (including an offer from him for them to monetise the video for themselves if he was allowed to crowd fund in order to pay for the fan film instead of using his own money):

https://youtu.be/G3LOEuhryMo

Essentially Warner said if he tried to fight the claim they would take the money (earned thus far I assume), take down his channel and delete the video. He told them no probs, take the money, it was never about the money, he made it as a fan for the fans and just wants it to be available for them and for his channel to be left alone.

Yep, good article which all makes perfect sense. I still think Warner/Disney could have taken a different approach to better manage their PR.

I also have to wonder how many fan films to date they have actually felt compelled to claim in order to protect their IP, when it’s clear it is a fan film and he has been upfront about not making any money out of it yet still making it all the same. It’s not every day that a Star Wars fan film gets the success that this one did and I think this is a significant factor in the action Warner/Disney (in association?) has taken.

Also I think 4throck hit upon one of the points Thor was making in that SWT has essentially done free work for them that ultimately benefits them since SWT himself isn’t making a penny from it. If he had monetised it then it would certainly make sense for them to claim their IP in order to protect it or launch a lawsuit. I agree with Thor that ultimately it generates interest and excitement for Star Wars which could be fed back into Disney’s official movies and content and helping to generate good will in those that don’t currently hold a favourable disposition towards Disney due to any number of issues.

As to SWT himself - he makes his living as a YouTube content creator, it is a valid occupation with the masses always craving and demanding more content to consume. So it makes sense to have merchandise to subpliment that and allow people to represent something they like and enjoy being involved in that part of the Star Wars community.

He undertook this project understanding he wasn’t allowed to make money from it as he normally would yet poured a ridiculous amount (by most people’s standards here I would assume) of his own money into it knowing he wouldn’t be getting it back. His original plan as I understand it was to make a full feature length fan film but has had to break it up into sizeable episodic chunks in order to realistically be able to afford and achieve that dream, one episode at a time as he can fund them. I honestly think any noticeable regret of not being able to monetise the fan film stems from being able to fund the other episodes. Think of it from a faneditor’s point of view such as Adywan where they take donnations to fund the cost of the edit itself.

Now in saying all that, I think he does play a slight negative angle against Disney in that he obviously isn’t to taken with Disney’s choices in their Star Wars movies, whether that just be TLJ or all of them. But that’s just his opinion, no one has to agree with it to enjoy his film or feel that the situation could have been handled another way that wouldn’t instantly make many think the worst of Disney.

I think you’re being very reasonable and level headed Rogue though it’s probably better to just lay out the facts or your opinion and let people take it onboard and make up their own mind if it makes sense to them. Telling them they are being brainwashed and are wrapped around youtuber little fingers will naturally get their backs up and be less inclined to approach your viewpoint with an open mind.

I don’t know if it can be said it was just Warner Chappel, if you look at the claimnant information it says:

Warner Chappel
Walt Disney Music Company

But it is definitely over a piece of music he paid to have composed that obviously the claimnant felt is too similar to the official Inperial March.

Disney being the IP owner can of course do whatever they want. It’s a matter of handling the situation in the right way. There’s already a preexisting relationship between them, I’m sure a better way would have been to contact him first (like he did with them) and come to a compromise where he changes the music or is allowed to monetise his film and pay a royalty to them for use of an “Imperial March rendition”. Instead they come off as the usual corporation trying to screw the little man to the wall and adds fuel to the narrative that Disney are anti-fandom who will try to screw every last penny out of them because of the attachment to a franchise that Disney now owns. I mean they bought the franchise to make money but there’s got to be more than that in the relationship they build with the fandom and the stories they try to tell with that property.
