The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints (a WIP)
Time

Hey Dr Dre !

Thank you for your comparison. Watching it, I was not sure that Despecialized colors were beter looking than Poita’s image (which is yet beautiful).

So I tried to adjust brightness, contrast and curves of your restult to obtain a kind of medium. I ended up with this : http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/181187.

And, with your very useful tool, I exported the model for the other shot and the result is : http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/181189.

By the way, these scans are wonderful ! Maybe some shots will be available for the next versions of Despecialized before the full release of the Trilogy “FTLFT” ? 😃

Ok, but didn’t Mike do something like superposing/averaging Tech prints (supposed to be made by the same IP ?) to get a level of detail which is not on one of them individualy ?

There’s a video showing the Tantive’s door were we see very small details. Can a 4K scan of a very good print be as sharp as it is ?

So, what we call original negative is not the image directly captured by the camera for each shot.
What you say about the SE remastering is very interesting. Is this true only for recomposited shots of for all the film ? In this case, how faithful is the way of using the 2004 master for a restauration of the OT ?

I learn a lot about cinematographic technics on this forum and I’m surely not alone. 😉

Neverar's A New Hope Technicolor Recreation <strong>(Final Version Released!)</strong>

NeverarGreat, when you say having replaced the Binary Sunset and the lightsabers by “77’ versions”, what did you do exactly ?

Did you insert the full sunset footage from the SSE before recoloring it or is it a combination between SSE and Bluray ?

For the sabers, I suppose you rotoscoped the SSE sabers ?

Or are those 77’ elements from other sources (you mention Team Blu’s GOUT in your post) ?

I agree for the white balance. It’s pretty clause to what I obtained, using the smoke on the Jawa’s left as neutral reference.

I think we have the good color balance, but there’s probably a choice to make about the saturation (could the LPP or the scan be under or over saturated ?).

Here are three versions of my earlier regrade :

saturation decreased
saturation decreased
saturation untouched
saturation untouched
saturation increased
saturation increased

A test of a global lightening of the sample (it is not a proper gamma correction). Dark shots are still very dark (interesting to compare with Harmy’s choice here : https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P9zKZRT5Kvw/UlNIHMlr-UI/AAAAAAAACbw/nGWESqsmlLIDnElbq395IC9DwEfkwtNxQCL0B/w997-h561-no/Compar%2Bmaster.avi_snapshot_03.26_%5B2013.08.01_11.12.45%5D.jpg).

Preserving &quot;French&quot; Original Trilogy - ANH V1.0 released - ESB in progress
Time

As I grew up with the very soft “ça ne m’étonne pas”, I had never heard that “pauvre cave”. This change is as significant for the scene as the stupid Greedo’s fire.

Some replicas of the french dub might have been written by Audiard !

The subtitles have been changed for the SE to better match the original text, haven’t they ? It seems to me Greedo mentions the imperial cruiser etc.

Perhaps I am a little naive but… Dr. Dre, if you wanted to upscale 2.7 to 1080p with the last version of your super-resolution algorithm and make it match to the corrected and contrast-adjusted LPP, would it be long ?

If it’s quick, it could be the first 1080p version of Despecialized (“DREspecialized” ?) before Harmy’s release replacing remaining GOUT elements by SSE (unless Poita’s scan images are yet usable) and proposing a choice between Neverar’s technicolor mode and your LPP mode.

Maybe you’d be allowed to call it 2.99. 😉

There are very intersting informations in the Legacy thread. Mike Verta explained that his technicolor scans were made to capture maximum data from the prints and still needed to be corrected to recover their original look. And Harmy used the raw scans as reference for DE v2.5 (or 2.0 ? I have some gaps in OT-history…). Plus, as he said himself, he worked on colors to match the scans but not on contrast.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI - Grindhouse 35mm LPP (Released)
Time

Harmy, what did you think about results of Dre’s print-correcting tool on the ROTJ LPP (watchable here : http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/920095) ?

Since this way of color-correcting seems to be pretty quick, I wonder if a “Grindhouse 2.0”, using this tool and a little manual adjustment for contrast, could be proposed before a future cleaned version which won’t arrive tomorrow.

A question, otherwise : the comparison gallery you posted on the first page showed you chose to give to the Grindhouse edition the same framing as the DE. Was this cropping a deliberate decision or a necessity due to the wear of the print or the video format ?

Congratulations and thanks for your great work on the three films !

So… this is my first post on the forum.

I’m very impressed by your previews of reel 4 and very interest by the work on Star Wars colors currently made by yourself, Dr Dre, Towne32 etc.

As a part of the garbage pit scene is at the end of your previews and in the beginning of the preview of former Team Negative One’s terminated project “Eastman vs. Technicolor”, I found interesting to make the comparison.

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/164175/picture:0

This color unajusted technicolor scan has more contrast and less greenish tint (rather blueish). And looks in my eyes more “theatrical”, because of its effect of lights and shadows. Leia’s dress and stormtrooper armors are whiter whereas the background wall is way darker.

So, I wonder if you have any plans to make your correction match more like that kind of scans or if you consider your choices for that scene as definitive.
