Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

Oh, the real life strikes back ! 😉 Congratulations for you job !

Why wouldn’t Despecialized become a team/community work for the next edition(s) ? I know it is yet partly the case (the list of “special thanks”, Towne’s SW etc.), but what if guy who have the skills and the experience here work together for scenes replacement, rotoscoping etc. under your supervision ?

For the Original, since Neverar’s correction is coming soon and good 35 mm available references multiplicating, the OT community should move forward ! “On met la gomme Chico !”

GOUT Technicolor regrade (single pass) (* unfinished project * - lots of info)
Time

If your assumption about the (red ?) faded internegative which would have been corrected by one pass was confirmed (and that make sense), it could be interesting to test something : to come back to the original color by crossing the road in the opposite direction.

  1. Reconstructing the fading (it would be the hardest part and imply a lot of observations and suppositions about the balancing process applied for the Laserdisc)
  2. Restauring the colors by using your famous tool.

Neverar's A New Hope Technicolor Recreation <strong>(Final Version Released!)</strong>
Time

Those debates remind me a question.

The “Technicolor look” is often opposed to “Eastman” or “Home video” looks for preservations here. But how could it actually be defined for Star Wars ? Does it just mean more vivid colors and sometimes little flaws due to complexity of the process and the importance of the human eye to obtain the correctly balanced image ?

In all the cases, Star Wars never look like Gone with the wind, The ten commandments or Singing in the rain. And in all the cases, it was shot on Kodak stock (there’s not three reels and filters in the camera) but processed with a color separation master, right ? So, even printed by the Eastman process, it is a Technicolor film, no ?

So, taking in account the fact that each print is different, what would be - in term of colors, contrast, sharpness etc. - the differences between a british Tech print with correctly aligned chanels and no grading flaws and a non faded Eastman print ?

Looks a lot like your color balanced reel 1 of the LPP. That’s nice !

However, the blown out whites of the blu-ray remain in your attempt whereas Neverar resolved the problem in his work. So, I was interested about testing something : manually adjusting the curves of Neverar’s picture to approximately match yours, except for the far high color values. Here’s the (not perfect) result : http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/196918/picture:0 (compared to your last result and Neverar’s version).

Anyway, the question of the distinctive look of Tatooine’s scenes is still here and Neverar’s final result is probably the one that is the most correct.

The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints (a WIP)
Time

I don’t think we could say that a release of these physically cleaned and perfectly scanned reels is “grindhouse”. I like very much the idea of the scan being faithful to what was on the screen in 1980 : the dirts ON the print are litterally destroyed but nothing IN the print is digitally erased. What do you think about it Poita ? 😃

Info: The Ultimate Super Resolution Technique

I wonder something Neverar : do you think that “dye cloud algorithm” will preserve the color timing of the image, even with a very high range ? Because the density and the inequal repartition of the silver particle are taken in consideration for the printing process to obtain a printed image faithful to the captured image. If you build an averaged image with the maximum of dye clouds, it will be very, very dark, no ?

WOWOW Star Wars Saga (Released)

For the clipped whites, is the broadcast really better than the Blu Ray converted to the correct range as explained by Adywan and done by Neverar for ANH ?

As for the different colors, it will be nice to see few comparisons. But it would be a different grading of the 2004 master which has yet its problems at the beginning, no ?

Very teasing ! It looks so good and the colors are nicely consistent.

However, I wonder something : if that sample is from one print, souldn’t the inconsistency between shot be considered as “original” and preserved, even if it looks less good ? Unless the inconsistency is from the scanning process ?
